Susan Ziel is a self-taught artist who transforms textiles into liberated, technicolor commodities. Susanâs work was featured at the Indiana Design Center, and one of her purses â made from her husbandâs retired ties â won a contest and was featured in Haute Handbags. Susan relishes the artistic inspiration of Wabi as she creates her âedgyâ purses, fabric bowls, wall hangings and other delightful fare. Susan first encountered âWabiâ as an aesthetic theme after dinner at a restaurant in New Orleans. The entire restaurant was themed in black and white, but the waiters wore hand-painted, colorful ties. The bussers wore black t-shirts with the word âWABIâ in prominent white lettering down the front. Wabi is a component of the Japanese phrase âWabi-sabi,â an idea that accepts impermanence. Wabi elevates asymmetry, irregularity, and simplicity, all positive features of Susanâs art.
