Seeing new individuals pop up in town wasn’t as uncommon as it once was to Cecil, his surprise lessening each time it would occur. But it was still easy for him to sympathize with the confusion that most were initially struck with when they found themselves on main street. He was on his usual walk to work at the cafe when he spotted a new face, a nervous smile spreading across his lips once he heard the other’s question. “Shit… Congo Square? That’s in New Orleans isn’t it?” He questioned, head tilting to the side slightly. “I had the wildest night on my twenty-first birthday in New Orleans…” He commented, trailing off topic. “I hate to be the one to break it to you but, you’re far from Louisiana. Or maybe not — no one’s sure what this town is or where we are.”
---
The young man knew of New Orleans, that was a good sign. It didn’t rule out death, but he doubts that any denizen of hell would speak of a birthday there. Though Jean-Baptiste was lost, the man put him at ease, if only slightly. “Well, I must find out, you mentioned others? Is there a mayor? A governor? Maybe a well-to-do aristocrat?” Jean-Baptiste thought maybe the boy would know more. He seemed so at home here. “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name Mr...” His voice tapered downward in volume as he awaited an answer. Then he remembered the rolled cigarette behind his ear, and pulled it out.

Jean-Baptiste Facilier was walking through what he thought were the streets of New Orleans after a long day of healing the ill. He had only had his eyes fixed on his leather boots for a moment before he looked up again to see the world around him had morphed into something unrecognizable. The French Colonial storefronts were now completely different, and much more ornate looking. The aged and cracking paints were replaced with solid and vibrant paints. The cracked brick roads were now spotless and smoother. "What in the devil..." Jean-Baptiste barely uttered before he heard footsteps to his right. He whirled around to greet the stranger, "Excuse me, what's happened to Congo Square? Where am I?"
despite the strange learning curve, audhild had managed to adapt to her surroundings fairly well. even if the demi goddess missed asgaard dearly, there were plenty of reasons she found to enjoy her new home. as she made her way towards the quaint little antique shop in town, she heard the stranger pipe up, quickly drawing her attention. the blonde’s lashes fluttered as she listened to him, soaking in his question, before finally giving him an answer. “ oh well, i’m not exactly certain what they call this place but isn’t it just the cutest? it’s not like any other midgaardian town i’ve been to before “ she replied sweetly. clearly she was taking all this, a little too well.
---
He was perplexed by her answer, but somehow it brought him comfort. This place, wherever it was, was rather ‘cute’ it was much nicer and more sleek than what he was used to. “I’m sorry,” Jean-Baptiste started with a bit of a smirk, hoping she would reveal a joke, “did you just say “midgaardian” as in like the Norse mythology word for Earth?” The word Earth rang in his ears. Was he even on Earth anymore. He began to inspect the almost alien environment around him. “Oh, hell, what’s going on here?”

Though she wasn’t sure just how long it had been since she’d seen an alive person, Carmen was still marveling over the newfound air in her lungs & the satisfying weight of her own body, over the rhythmic rattle of bones she’d grown used to in the Land of the Dead. The quiet thuds of her own footfalls against the cobblestone, as opposed to the gentle brush of golden petals, was broken by the voice of him, and she turned, head tilting as she stared at the man. “Certainly not Heaven,” she purred, the Spanish accent drawing out each word, and she began to walk closer; curious. “I’d say Hell, but I just came from there myself. You won’t hear me complaining about a change of scenery, lindo.”
----
The woman didn’t answer Jean-Baptiste in the way he had hoped. However her answer just raised more questions. Was he on the “other side” now? Was this some sort of purgatory? Had he been damned to an eternity in this brightly colored faux-world? “You... what do you mean you just came from hell? Are we dead?” Now he was really beginning to wonder if he had died somehow. He didn’t remember it whatsoever. Though she had complimented him and called him “pretty”, he wasn’t quite sure why her first reaction was to be flirty. Was she not just as freaked out as he?

bio warning: mental illness, death
Jean-Baptiste Facilier doesn't know a lot about his mother other than she was the one who named him, and that shortly after his birth, she was admitted to an asylum. According to his aunt Dorothy, she always babbled about how a Shadow Man was coming to take her baby away. Shortly after she was admitted, she died of unknown reasons in the hospital. So he never really got the chance to know her for himself. Though aside from all of that, he had a normal childhood. His aunt Dorothy gave him an education from home and taught him many things, ranging from sewing and arithmatic to dance and reading. He never really had questions about his father until he entered his teen years. His aunt had never met the man, and the only clue he had to go on was his given last name. It had to belong to his father right.
When JB was seventeen, he finally went out to seek his father, which he did. He didn't quite like the man his father was, but he wasn't surprised to see how dastardly the doctor was given the fact that he was absent through his life. Regardless he worked to build a relationship with his father and his half-sister, Calliope. As it turns out, Calliope was pulling a con of her own against their father. Though Jean-Baptiste could see right through it, he wasn't about to blow the whistle on her. The doctor along with Calliope gladly taught him about the other side, before he disappeared once again into the night. All that remained were whispers in the streets of a shadow man. J wondered if maybe that was who his mother rambled about. Maybe she wasn't crazy after all. Maybe his father let JB find him.
It didn't take long for Jean-Baptiste to realize that he wanted to use his newfound skills to help people rather than trick and deceive. He received an education in medicine and used his skills along with the knowledge he gained to become a holistic healer. He decided to return to his father's old shop after his education only to find that his half-sister was now running it. He decided to take her up on an offer to work there with her. Using his skills to heal peoples' minds, bodies, and spirits.
