Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like “he was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handouts” and I wanted to be like… okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
An alarming amount of people seem to think capitalism = all trade, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
"it would be so good if it was good" will haunt you but "it's extremely good, except for the one or two parts which are so bad it's genuinely kind of insulting" will straight up drive you insane

i hate the entitlement of people complaining they don't have fan content of something they like. like you're the fan, YOU MAKE IT. Don't want to make it? Pay someone to.
"there's only this content out, what about the content i want" people wanted that content, so they made that content. this is a YOU problem.
it's like going to a potluck and saying "why didn't anyone make chocolate cake." when you didn't bring anything and everyone else worked hard on their food.
our grandmothers did not make spock x kirk zines on photocopiers for this
Digital circus' biggest problem is that it was written to be a niche show aimed at weird analytical queers with actual media literacy and it accidentally blew tf up and hit the mainstream and a bunch of people who have never had a second thought about anything got into it
With the whole "Markiplier making his own DVD copies of Iron Lung to sell" thing, it's been fascinating and slightly concerning how many people seem to genuinely believe that if a physical release isn't coming from a giant corporation, it must automatically be a bootleg.
Look at me.
Look me directly in the eyes while I say this.
You can just make things.
You can simply create something and put it into the world.
That's allowed.
People have been doing it for centuries.
They sell blank VHS tapes. They sell blank DVDs. Blank CDs. You can buy flash drives by the bucketful if you really want to. If you create a movie, an album, a game, a documentary, or a four-hour video essay about the mating habits of fictional space goblins, you are entirely permitted to put that thing on physical media and sell it.
That is not piracy.
Piracy is taking something that belongs to someone else and reproducing or distributing it without permission.
If I buy a DVD of a movie, I own that copy of the movie. I do not own the movie itself. I didn't acquire the rights to duplicate it, press a thousand copies, and start selling them out of my garage like I've become the regional distributor for Warner Bros.
The copyright, distribution rights, and intellectual property still belong to whoever created it or whoever legally acquired those rights.
If I start burning copies of Iron Lung and selling them myself without Markiplier's permission, that's piracy.
If Markiplier, who made and owns the rights to Iron Lung, burns copies and sells them himself, that's just distribution.
He's the rights holder.
He's distributing his own work.
If you made it, if it came from your own mind, your own work, your own time, your own resources, then congratulations. You own the thing. You don't need a corporation to bless it with legitimacy.
The corporation is not what makes it real.
The fact that it exists is what makes it real.
I think we've accidentally spent so many years living inside a world dominated by mass-produced media that some people have developed the strange assumption that all media emerges from a factory somewhere. As if films naturally occur in shrink-wrapped plastic cases and descend from the heavens aboard a pallet truck.
But independent artists have been burning discs, dubbing tapes, printing books, pressing records, and mailing things directly to people for longer than many of us have been alive.
That's not a bootleg.
That's just a product.
It's not "bootleg."
It's just... leg.
The normal kind.
The original, free-range, locally sourced leg.
tumblr is genuinely the only social media site with any specific culture because it's the only site where content isn't algorithmic and doesn't vanish into oblivion after like 2 days. we still talk about goncharov. you think twitter is still talking about the ice wars on europa? no. we make internet culture and everybody steals from us, including the awful discourse. this is why i will never leave
most sm sites are constantly leaping onto the newest, hottest topics; tumblr users are beating the dead horse long after it's become a skeleton
They looove to say tumblr is dead etc.
But then, we see tweets and instagram posts with printacreens of tumblr quotes and discussions.
And honestly, I am SO glad I came back to tumblr. Is... so chill in here. Yeah it has dramas and all, but only if I look for it. I can... stay on my lane, not baing bothered by agressive algorithm and relax.
I used instagram for years, and I noticed how unhappy and anxious that social media was making me. The "doom scroll" was really and honestly harmful. I spended my 1h40 going to work and coming back (more than 3h of my day) dooming scrolling. Now? I got 3 chapters of my fanfic written in a month just in the bus, its been years since I was able to fully write ONE. Belived I had lost my edge.
I want to engage on tumblr to be part of a community, and to because of FOMO.
I love it here.

Can you believe it guys? TADC finale, just a week away!
I hate this genre of post so much. Why are we moralizing enjoying art. "Consuming media" oh you mean reading a book? Listening to music? Watching a movie???? There's just no nuance. Reading and analyzing Ulysses is consuming media therefore unaware and loser behavior.
And a lot of tags on that post said "buying clothes" as a non-media piece, which is really funny! You are still "consuming" someone else's art!
