One of my favorite things about the new Wildwood adaptation is the portrayal of Prue herself.
(Spoiler free discussion)
As good as the original Wildwood novel is, I've begun to realize Prue isn't a very active protagonist, and she feels rather one-dimensional. Aside from her conscious decision to go into the woods (both times), the subsequent events that happen are not necessarily of her own volition; It feels like characters presenting a quest and Prue agreeing to it every time, and her primary goal to rescue her brother gets repeated at near-nauseam. The plot happens around her and she reacts accordingly.
Really, the appeal of the story is the spectacle; the worldbuilding, and the character interactions and politics that stem from it. I will admit one of my favorite methods for presenting a fantasy story is the Isekai route; Having the protagonist be new to the fantastical world at hand and learning its rules, factions and history at the same pace as the reader. It's incredibly effective and immersive even if it is easy to slip into the spectrum of having the protagonist feel like a vessel for the audience/reader and not their own character.
There's really only one moment in the novel I can recall where I wanted to scream "NOOO DON'T DO IT!" At Prue.
In contrast, the marketing for the film already bares the slogan "One choice changes everything". In what little has been revealed of Prue, including scenes that are original to the adaptation, she already feels like she has more agency than her book counterpart. The entire plot happens because of her actions and she tries her best to fix the problems that arise (if you know you know), not just the actions of her parents. Hopefully as we see more footage of her, she will feel like even more of her own character.
