subtext that the creator meant to put in there, that comes up several times at regular intervals in tonally consistent scenes and is pretty blatantly baked into the text? that's fine, that's normal, that's what I expect. subtext where the creator WASN'T doing it on purpose but it still just about coheres to make sense? that drives me insane. it makes me feel like a one-legged sailor setting off from nantucket on a guided mission to get this whale.

Fascinating to me how little Phoenix really knows about Mia at the start of AA1. He's never met the sister she's so close with, and never heard about Mia's whole family being spirit mediums and all the drama that involved. Never heard that that's specifically the reason Mia became a lawyer. It paints Mia as a deeply private person, who never spoke about herself. She gives off the vibe of a strong and successful city lady, and immediately you realize that has to be by design, because she has that vibe despite growing up on a mountain. Phoenix never questions, and only ever sees her as his unflappable mentor. He only really finds out anything about her after she's already gone.

My husband told me I also should share the next part of this story, where I, feebly trying to defend my honor against a child, said, "No, this video was just big when I was in college!" and he scoffed, rolled his eyes, and absolutely obliterated me by saying, "So did you go to furry college?"
