I've been reading about viking age gender roles and gender expression lately, which kind of inspired this. Men and women are separate in their roles and expectations but Yngvilðr exists in both spaces at once, hence the male and female figures here. The female figures are assumed to be Valkyries, who serve dead warriors drinking horns in Oðinn's hall. Here she is serving the horn to herself, rather than someone else. She fulfils to role of warrior for herself, kind of in the same ways Valkyries do. The warrior figures are from vendel age Sweden, which precedes the viking age (although they share a lot of religious motifs). The figures would've appeared on helmets the same style as Yngvilðr's and with the boar symbolism they felt fitting here. When I think about it Yngvilðr really is the leader of the woke brigade. She enjoys crossdressing and filling traditionally male roles but she's very content and comfortable with her womanhood, she just wishes others would respect her for it as much as she respects herself.
