Your assignment is simple. You are given the name and the workplace of a particular man that has been digging his nose where it doesnât belong. Files have been dug through, names have been looked up, and strange rumors of Han Chaeyoung have been uttered from his mouth; your elegant leader doesnât find it suitable for him to continue it any longer, so you are set up to the task to eliminate him at all costs. Use whatever you like, just be sure not to leave a trace. Any wind of Miss Hanâs name around the death will shout warning bells to everyone and anyone connected, and we must ensure that does not happen at any cost. Do your best, and please remember; failure is not an option!Â
Every morning the maple leaves.
Every morning another chapter where the hero shifts
from one foot to the other. Every morning the same big
and little words all spelling out desire, all spelling out
You will be alone always and then you will die.Â
â Richard Siken, Litany in Which Certain Things are Crossed OutÂ
So maybe you wanted to be given more than another face in the crowd and an order to exterminate a stranger, something other than fear and desperation. Maybe a list of rules to play by: a dictated weapon, a determined way of death, a time, a place, a handicap to prove your worth.Â
Dear so-and-so, Iâm sorry you died by my hands.
Dear so-and so, Iâm sorry I left you evicerated, you poor sad thing.
Dear so-and-so, Iâm sorry your pizza was poisoned but isnât death by pepperoni a bit lame?Â
You want a better story? Fine.
A beautiful day, then. A blue sky dotted with the occasional white cloud and a pleasant breeze. A walk in the park and nearly two weeks of preparation. Another curiosity killed the cat scenario.Â
Arenât you bored by now? Shall I continue?
Well, donât blame me later.Â
Heâs fidgety; his hands give away the signs of a heavy smoker under stress. He wants fame, a name to a face, to be remembered. So many do but you wished for something other than mere desperation. This is turning out to be disappointing.Â
He lives alone. Had a girlfriend who had a cat. Maybe it was a ploy for attention or spite or look at me successful now I hope you regret what youâve done. How petty, how human, how pathetic. You can read it from the lines between his eyebrows and the set of his jaw. You would yawn but the faster this is over, the quicker you can move onto something of more interest. Someone who presents a challenge, has you backed against a wall and is worth the sense of guilt that comes when rigor mortis sets in. Someone you can commemorate in long term memory.Â
Anyways, he lives alone and has a technician scheduled to come in today for light fixtures, for little upgrades, for splurges someone with his salary shouldnât be making. But you donât help others make value judgement. You donât weigh the scale either; you are merely Atroposâ scissors.Â
From here, you should be able to tell how the story ends.
Iâll continue if you insist.Â
The uniform is uncomfortable with a name not your own stitched above the pocket. Fingers press the floor he resides on, you already committed the layout of his house to memory. Hands already gloved as they grip the toolbox. You get off, ring the doorbell, say hello with that trained pleasant smile of yours. You take a look at where he wishes to install the fixture, prepare the ladder and the climb, then a hand around his neck and you shove him against a wall,
stop interrupting. Iâm getting to it.Â
Here is the image of murdering a man. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
                                                Crossed out.
Skilled hands in a locked room. Crossed out. Strangulation marks that blossom on the neck. Crossed out. A fish gaping or a man who looks like a fish. Crossed out.Â
A casket hidden in the box marked for a chandelier that was never there, bound to be shipped out tonight where the other side will end the magic act.Â
Leave no trace.
You hope Miss Han wonât mind if you take that literally. A murder without a body; a name protected.Â
Now if this was a story, what role would you be playing?
So yes, maybe you are the knight. Although you are among many, serving the same princess. Reciprocation does not exist; life was never fair to begin with.
Or maybe youâre the dragon because the knight protects but the dragon slays.
Perhaps the knight was always the dragon to begin with.Â

When the people I used to know found out what I had been doing, how I had been living- they asked me why. But thereâs no use in talking to people who have a home, they have no idea what its like to seek safety in other people, for home to be wherever you lay your head.
but higher ups want answers, preferably in the form of an executed mission, and preferably as soon as possible. and so time is running out. what do you do now?Â
usually, silence is a reply in of itself but youâve gotten stubborn. like when you were seven and tried to stay up to take a glimpse at santa claus. ( you hope the conclusion isnât the same. you remember the bitter taste of disappointment watching your mother place the presents under the small plastic tree ) you like higher rates of survival, higher chances at securing money, and maybe you like being right as well.Â
so here you are, in suit and tie ( again ) waiting. trademark of your companyâs uniform in the plain white shirt and pale blue tie, a personal touch in the way glasses are seated high upon the bridge of your nose. hair tousled, warm cup of coffee in hand, and continued glances at your watch. humans are marked by routine, plus and minus a few minutes.Â
and there he is.
the game begins again.Â
eyes focus on the documents on hand, the coffee with the green emblem in the other. the walk is brisk, calculated, and right into him. coffee sloshes out of its container and onto the boyâs shirt. you feign suprise: eyes wide, lips parted, and the âoh my god. iâm so sorry. i--â as you try to wipe off the stain to the best of your ability. but in all honesty it is just a napkin dabbing at everywhere â a distraction â as you slip a piece of paper into his hands.Â
it has a number â yours to be precise â and a simple scrawled out note: i need your reply by tonight.Â
âforgive me,â you offer him one of those sheepish smiles, as if you were truly sorry for ruining one of his shirts, allowing pink to dust your cheeks as you resume to trying to clean up your mess. you pull out a hankerchief ( soft, white, with flowers embroidered into the corner because this is what your mother does to take her mind of work ) and take his hands in yours before offering it like an olive branch.Â
you are not a born killer. no one is. a sword was not forge into your palms and nor was a gun assembled in purpose for your hands. you are not a born killer, but even if otherwise, of what obligations must you follow?
nothing. nothing at all. Â Â
so itâs in this evening that you seek solace in the company youâve made over the years. rare are times like this, but arenât reunions meant to be rare no? for where else would they draw significance from? but rather than drown yourself in alcohol and nostalgia tonight (whatâs the difference?), thereâs a jabbing at your sides and a pointed stare in the direction of another patron. only a brief glimpse but thereâs disappointment when you donât stare like youâre supposed to.Â
encouragements of âgo talk to him,â but you donât budge. of what obligations must you owe this to? you almost laugh that he thought youâd be so obedient to follow, but a nudge grows into a push and you found yourself staggering forward in ungraceful steps. you respond with an âowâ, at least to make your point, but long has the timeframe for escape passed. so you make your way towards the counter and itâs only now that recognition flashes in your head.Â
fingers swiftly slips the paper into your palm but youâve no urgency to explore the contents. not yet. youâd rather focus on the figure before you. âoh?â slips in your astonishment because this is a first of firsts. perhaps you may not be so inclined in being sought after, but then neither have you made any actual attempts to conceal your whereabouts (or perhaps itâs simply because no other has managed this far). so this is your acknowledgement to him, through the silence of your smile, bearing a semblance of added amusement.
âwhat can i say? solitude isnât the best of methods for survival, is it?â you shrug, an effort to maintain neutrality but it slides off your shoulders because moments donât last and distractions are made to be exploited. so you supply another smile in modesty but a hand easily finds comfort by his shoulder as you pull yourself forward and draw a whisper into his ear, âespecially for a wolf, no?â
now you lean back, find comfort in the crafted innocence that masks your disposition; it takes two to play a game and itâll be discourteous of you not to respect his. so lips draw a little wider and head gently rests against knuckles; if he desired to be entertained then so be it.
ânow i believe a gentleman wouldâve bought me a drink at the very least,â a brow raised and youâve only just begun but amusement is hard to hide, âor is this the extent of a nice suit?â
you would delight yourself in his response but all things must come to an end and as much as youâve enjoyed this little exchange, social rules dictates how the duration of your stay equates to certain outcomes and youâd rather not let it fall under undesirable assumptions. âbut i suppose this meeting is at its conclusion anyways, so iâll take my leave if you donât mind,â you turn but mischief tugs at your lips in the ensuing silence and you retreat your gaze back to meet his one last time, âand thanks for fixing my shirt.â
so you bid farewell with a gentle dip of your head, the plastered smile on your face slips off as soon as your back has turned. after all, what good is a performer if you canât distinguish between your roles?
you return and immediately dismiss the invasive inquiries (and their hopes); expected, but still an inconvenience upon your peaceful evening. âwill you see him again??â is amongst the curiosities thrown around the table and you reply as vaguely as youâre supposed to â because theyâll never know.
âmaybe i will.â
all hands on deck, or rather, the deck is in your hand â the way you like it, the way everything plays out in your favor. all humans are predictable: ruled by desires and fears, and in return this is what makes us human. maybe it is humanity that has long gotten rid of the element of surprise.Â
or maybe you are the predictable one. he takes your card like he takes your deck and there goes the rug from under your feet. composition never breaks. you are far too seasoned for that so you swallow in the laugh and relax in your skin, switching back to observation when his whisper tickles your ear. you watch the way he balances his head on his hand and listen to the words that spill forth. there goes the ace of hearts, there goes the queen of spades. you think you ought to be furious but only amusement flows through your veins.Â
speechless, what an oddity for you. you wish to tell him that you would have ordered him a drink but you respect autonomy too much to make decisions for them. (thatâs a lie but so is this kid assuming you to be a gentleman; you forfeit defense for continued immersion in this game.) but you see haste at the way heâs wrapping up conversations and maybe you had it right all along.Â
keep up appearances. keep favored company around. immerse oneself in the illusion of normalcy. ( like you in some respects )Â
you wave him off with a smile gracing your lips. partings ought not to be too flamboyant. amber reaches your lips and wait for news.

hello everyone! first, i apologize for not following the entire directory. currently on vacation and unable to do wonderful things when limited to mobile devices. as introductions go, this will be extremely boring. i have a barely functional plots page but feel free to brainstorm bc i am open for anything! thank you all for your warm messages and hopefully I'll be able to reply to them soon ; ^ ;
thereâs a flurry of papers, an indication of his temperament as they garnish his table, all askew. he grunts as he sits, you think this is an indication of future ailments as eyes catch onto a file before it gets tucked away with the rest of the papers. the picture depicted a young man, the profile detailed his age and other undisclosed information. you remember giving yours away, probably there amidst the other files.Â
hands in your pocket, a posture of ease as you wait for him to finally get to the point. i have something for you, he starts. no shit, why else would you be here to begin with? pleasantries are exchanged first, it is amusing how people cling to norms like this, before the task is given away with great description. the head begins to plot, thumbing through the presented papers to visualize the process. a definite challenge if one was to head into this alone, an alliance would heighten your chances but youâve never been one to share.Â
but let us speak in the language of ifs for a moment. if you were to partner up with another individualâŠÂ if you were willing to split the reward in half⊠who would you pick ?Â
cufflinks, tie clip, a tailored suit â the modern armor for gentlemen or something along those lines. you chuckle because never once have to dressed to impress to this extent. yet you are here, entering a bar, and scanning the crowd for a single face. it doesnât take long and you pretend not to take notice of it, walking towards the bartender and ordering a drink, observing casually from where you are positioned. a fort is built due to location and this is merely yours.Â
long sips as you study mannerisms, noting the differences between his behavior amongst his peers and that of conferences. youâve never really paid attention to the other individuals, perhaps you ought to. a mental note is filed to do so more often.Â
one of his female companions gape as you are caught openly staring. this was the point and now the game begins.Â
your gaze unwavering as she nudges your target and when he turns, you raise your glass in a toast. fingers beckon him forward with no concern towards possible rejection. group think, peer pressure, social psychology has dictated how this transaction would go â if facades were meant to be kept.Â
he approaches and you slide him a small slip of paper. business card of sorts but not quite. it is details of your affiliation and what you want from him: an alliance for a simple task and an equal split of the reward â no more and no less.
âyou are a hard individual to find,â you begin, lips curling into a smirk as you reach out to smooth his shirt, carefully teasing out the expressions of his companions as they continue to watch this interaction. you lean in closer, like a private conversation and in a way it is⊠just not in the way they expect: âbut sheep can always be tracked by their herd.â you tilt your head in his friendsâ direction as you wait for his reply.
