Vlad tried to get past the portal accident and the subsequent physiological changes once he was out of the hospital. He focused heavily on accumulating capital and gaining full control over his ghost half in order to do so. Eventually, he got to a point where he hardly thought about Jack and Maddie or what they were up to. He had a crush on Maddie in college, sure, but there was no obsession.

After 15 years of remission from the ecto-acne, it came back. Vlad wasn't as ill as the first time around, and he was mostly able to stay out of the hospital because his experience gave him more knowledge of how to better treat it. After laying awake night after agonizing night, his focus shifted. This was all their fault. No, it was Jack's. And Jack took something else from him...
