She steps toward him. Her head is held at an appraising angle. She believes the plea to be earnest. (Lae’zel feels pain. It is strange and startling in its nakedness. She has oft lamented his earnestness in passing, and yet now it pains her.)

“I could no more fix you than remake you. Not in Lolth’s image — no. But a soldier nonetheless.” She knows and cares little for the spider goddess, but she knows something of the Lolth-sworn, of a common devotion. They were both of them pruned as soldiers — even rejected, this has not changed. “Unrelenting. Unhesitating. Proud to carve your name across the flesh of those who dare oppose you.” Lae’zel pauses. Even if she could realize such a thing, she does not know if she would willingly bring it to pass. “Is that what you wish?”
