Among the early pioneers of photography in the 1800s was a middle-aged English doctor called Hugh Welch Diamond, who believed photography could be used in the diagnosis and treatment of the mentally ill. Diamond first established his medical career with a private practice in Soho, London, before specializing in psychiatry and becoming Resident Superintendent of the Female Department at the Surrey County Lunatic Asylum in 1848âa position he held until 1858. Diamond was an early adopter of photography, taking his first portraits just three months after Henry Fox Talbot licensed his âsalt printâ process for producing âphotogenic drawings.â As a follower of âphysiognomicsââa popular science based on the theory that disease (and character) could be discerned from an individualâs features or physiognomyâDiamond believed photography could be used as a curative therapy. In documenting madness, Diamond was following on from his predecessor at Surrey County, Sir Alexander Morison who had produced a book of illustrations by various artists depicting patients at the asylum called The Physiognomy of Mental Diseases in 1838. Diamond believed the book was not scientific as the drawings were mainly illustrative interpretations of what the artist saw and could therefore veer towards caricature. He believed that...

for english speakers - make sure to be careful for g/j because their vowels are the opposite way round in french than in english haha
BULLET JOURNALINGÂ
Watch the original video here ( x ) Before I saw this video, I always kept a book for my homework. I use grid paper and itâs perfect for BJ⌠Heh. After watching this, it helped me to start developing a system Iâm currently satisfied with.Â
To-do apps donât work with me. It always just sits on my screen with a notification and swiping something doesnât feel as satisfying as crossing it out victoriously with a pen. ^_^
LEGENDS ( you can also do it like this )Â Helps you quickly figure out what certain tasks are at a glance. The colours are for my spiraldexes which I will not be discussing unless you guys request it. c:
Pages This is basically what my pages look like. I write the numbers at the lower corners.I also added sticky notes for extra stuff like memorizing my moral definitions. :p
Calendar  ( x ) If you watch the video, youâre supposed to list out the dates but I prefer both, so I draw a calendar and paste it in my book and list out all the really appointments/stuff I have to do in my drawn calendar and some not-important-but-still-worth-noting notes in my list-calendar.
Index Just write down the pages as shown in the video. Pretty simple.Â
Other things you can include: I also stick some motivational images on the last page and stuff like that. Spiraldexes can be fun but they tend to be a little time consuming to draw or at least, I can seem to use them effectively. :c
Have pages especially for grocery lists/ grades/ etc.Â
Page full of favourite recipes
Stick an envelope at the back cover and fill it with motivational inspiration!
Stick printables ( x ) ( x ) ( x ) ( x )
Start a goal/wishlist!
 Good luck! :*Â

From John Grady: Â Flowing Data is Nathan Yau's website and very often discusses and provides a stage for some very useful ways of visualizing quantitative data.
Here are his choices for the best visualizations of 2013. it is interesting to note that he cites their growing sophistication and flexibility in display and analysis. Most importantly is the growing attention to the issues of displaying data as accurately as possible.
One of the frontiers for visual research and certainly, for sociology.

Frank Marshall: Botswanaâs Metalheads
Music preferences are never meant to be limited to a certain group of people or just one individual. Whatever the genre, music is intended to be enjoyed by all. This is made clear by South African photographer Frank Marshall through his series Renegades, where he documents fans of the heavy metal subculture in Botswana. With 60 portraits, he captures these true aficionados who, decked out in leather in the 80 degree heat, dispel stereotypes of this identity among Africans. Many of the fans have several roles outside of their passion for the music, ranging from soldiers to museum curators to prison wardens. Facing the belief that heavy metal audiences are traditionally Caucasian and Eurocentric, Marshall draws up questions surrounding cultural identity and ideology.

Disabled mannequins will be eliciting astonished looks from passers-by on Zurichâs Bahnhofstrasse today. Between the perfect mannequins, there will be figures with scoliosis or brittle bone disease modelling the latest fashions. One will have shortened limbs; the other a malformed spine. The campaign has been devised for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by Pro Infirmis, an organisation for the disabled. Entitled âBecause who is perfect? Get closer.â, it is designed to provoke reflection on the acceptance of people with disabilities. Director Alain Gsponer has captured the campaign as a short film. The figures are life-sized, three-dimensional representations of Miss Handicap 2010, Jasmin Rechsteiner, radio presenter and film critic Alex Oberholzer, track and field athlete Urs Kolly, blogger Nadja Schmid and actor Erwin Aljukic. "We often go chasing after ideals instead of accepting life in all its diversity. Pro Infirmis strives especially for the acceptance of disability and the inclusion of people with disabilities," says Mark ZumbĂźhl, a member of the Pro Infirmis Executive Board, in describing the campaign. -Pro Infirmis
