thinking about olaf and ernest’s relationship, to the extent that there is one. i see ernest as a character that wants to see VFD and the volunteers fail generally, but not participate in olaf’s purely self-serving schemes. and also i think he would have very little patience for someone like olaf, who is dramatic and cruel and odious just for the sake of it — and similarly i think olaf would feel kind of permanently suspicious of ernest’s loyalties and annoyed by his very cool, non-reactive demeanour. and then overlaying that with the possibility that ernest could be considered a more valuable, competent resource for the firestarting higher-ups than olaf is, considering that olaf seems to have been mostly decaying in his house achieving very little for many years, triggering his feelings of inadequacy. and then on top of that, the idea that ernest and kit might be dating (and even if other people don’t really believe that, i bet olaf would) and of course, that makes ernest even less trustworthy in his mind, and olaf has always had a sore point all his life about kit in general. i really like the idea of their dynamic being tense and challenging and working together, if they ever need to, being a generally awful experience for them both
