He's learned to defend himself and won't hesitate to extend that courtesy to others

Looks to you for permission to throw hands but respects your decision regardless

Doesn't always jump straight to violence. Sometimes, he'll take the diplomatic route and defend you with words. "I think they deserve an apology, don't you?"

Will tilt his head and kiss his teeth before ultimately deciding he has to lay someone out

"Just say the word and they're done." "Leave it." Will scrunch his nose and crack his neck, biting back the urge to act anyway.

James would rather you weren't present for any violent tendencies and asks you to turn away if there was any risk of real violence

Asks, "Are you alright?" In any crowded space to make sure you're okay and will hold onto you to make sure you never get separated

Isn't shy about keeping his hand on your back, waist, or holding your hand in a scary situation, even before you're together

"Get behind me," but not as a command, more as a plead since he knows you won't default to him protecting you.

No, like he'll plead for you to let him take care of you. "I can't lose you, please... just... get behind me."

You: "I can handle myself." Him: "I know. But won't you let me just do this for you anyway?"

Will get frustrated if you're in danger without him, rubbing his palms on his thighs, scratching at his wrist. He can't stand the thought of you in danger

There was nothing he loved more than having your fingers run through every strand of his hair.

You'd be laying on the couch together at the Holmes', James' head resting on your stomach as he laid between your legs, reading a book. Your hands would be in his hair, massaging his scalp, fingers absently twirling his curls as you were lost in your own thoughts.

When you would stop for whatever reason, he stops reading, slowly closing the book as he shifts to the side to turn himself towards you. His eyes wide while looking at you. Perplexed. Trying to figure out what made you interrupt the soothing moment you shared.

He would find you staring to the side, fixating whatever was in your line of sight.

He knows that look.

You were lost somewhere deep inside your brain, his hushed whines at the loss of contact doing nothing to bring you back to him.

He would flip over completely, kissing your stomach through the fabric of your skirt, his fingers now kneading at your hips - his own personalized trick to make you snap back to reality.

And he was successful every time.

You turn your head towards him, his sweet, needy eyes burning into yours. You let out a soft giggle at the sight.

'Yes?' you say through a smile, raising a hand to cup his face, your thumb caressing his cheek. He leans into the touch, placing a soft kiss to your palm, taking in the perfume you applied on your wrist.

He flips back around, assuming the position he was in before, this time placing your hand back onto his hair. He opens his book at the place he left off.

'Now, you may carry on exploring the limits of your boundless imagination,' he says with a satisfied grin.

You giggle, resuming the motions your hands were making. A satisfied hum escapes his lips. The simplicity of his needs sending warmth through your body.

You were exactly where you wanted to be.

Then you'd both totally fall asleep in that spot, your hands falling down at the base of his neck, his head leaning on your thighs. The rest of the Holmes' household tiptoeing around you, doing everything to not wake you up (oh and Cordelia would stand there for a minute, basking in the the peaceful atmosphere you two created); though Sherlock would barge, in calling James' at the top of his lungs - stirring you both awake with an annoyed groan.

How Dex would look at you because he knows you’re his next North Star.
