Perfectly Imperfect

It is shit how ugly that necklace is and how you think its mine. 

I believe stating "Is this yours?" in the form of a question means that I did not think, undeniably, that it was yours, but merely that there may be a chance of it belonging to yourself.

He laughed with her, taking her hand in his. He just wanted to hold her hand for a while… "I don’t know. I suppose you get rid of inhibitions, so you could mean it. But the inhibition would probably just be kissing me for the sake of it, so…" He gave her a sad smile when she said that. "I appreciate it. And I try, really… Things just don’t always work out that way."

"But, what if I want to kiss you and just don't..." She frowned thoughtfully, her words trailing off and disappearing entirely. Well that was certainly bothersome now wasn't it. "Tell me. If you're sad - promise you'll tell me, then maybe... I'm not usually good at better but maybe... maybe I can..."

What do you count as spectacular? 

Truthfully? I am not entirely sure. I suppose merely something that catches my surprise would suffice.

Luke pretended to be hurt by this statement. The back of his hand to his forehead, he let out a fake sob. “Just chores for the janitor?! The man hates me! He wouldn’t even pay me decently, I had to work way longer than I should’ve.” He watched her unwrap the gift and smiled with relief that she liked it. "Shocker right?" He asked with a smile. "No problem. Now Birthday Girl, we’re going to go have some fun today."

Viola gave a snort and rolled her eyes, "It gave you a good work ethic, besides at least you did not... sell your soul or something equally as horrific." Hugging the shirt to her chest her expression softened to a warmer grin and she nodded her head, "I am quite surprised actually.... I did not think someone would find my quips so insightful as to actually listen to them. It is perfect, thank you." She knew she probably said that already but it did not hurt to repeat oneself when it truly mattered. "Are we. What exactly does this fun entail me doing? Because you should be warned I am not often good at fun." 

He shrugged, but grinned at her. "Yeeeeeeeah I did. What kind of fake boyfriend slash actual friend would I be if I didn’t celebrate another year of your presence on the Earth? Nothing dramatic, no. Just chores for the janitor."

She tried to give him a mock glare but the expression was too warm and friendly to have any sort of effect, "You would have been a practical one, but.... I guess if it was just chores for the janitor." She gave him a small grin before unwrapping the present and finally letting out a laugh, "Would you look at that... it's perfect. Thank you."

"Ah, the bushes are my competition now are they?" He asked smiling. Listening to her drunken ramble, he managed to understand the truth in her words. "I don’t mind I suppose. As nice as a sober kiss would be, I’d rather have someone sober who meant it I guess." He gave a slight shrug as they reached her building. "I suppose I can get sad, but not very often any more. I have pills to help stop it, things are… Okay I suppose."

She giggled a little at his comment before she was more serious again, focusing on the answer to the question that she had asked.. at least focusing as much as one could focus in her current state, "Can't I mean it even if I was drunk? Just cause-cause people are drinking doesn't always mean they're not meaning things... I think." She frowned, having confused herself before shrugging and moving on, "Don't be sad. I don't want you to be sad.... okay?"

I couldn’t agree more. That’s why they say that the most exciting years are 13, 16,18 and 21. The rest are just another year.

Therefore unless something truly spectacular happens I do not see how 23 is going to be any different than just another year in my life.

I was not aware that stating I had seen you out by the fountain earlier and therefore thought this  necklace might be yours was talking shit, but if that is the case, I'll leave you alone then.

That makes sense. I’m not really much myself.

Well then you can use my adventure and pretend it was your own if anyone asks and you feel the need to be... adventurous in their eyes, that is. 

Senior, huh? I wouldn’t say you’re that old. 

Alright I might have a little time before I get to that, but honestly what else is there? It's all... repetitive really. 

Then don’t try and get it, just enjoy it. I’m not being mean; and you love it really. Plus catch. [She threw a small blue box at the girl.]

Now you're being bossy too [Viola jumped a little, almost dropping the box before finally managing to get a hold of it] ... You didn't have to.

But you do get permission to do some thing depending on your age. [Shrugs] I don’t know, maybe it is lame. 

I would not call it lame, it certainly is an advantage at those ages, however seeing as how I am now twenty three, I think the only thing I have to look forward to is being eligible to get the seniors discount. I've covered everything else. 

"Will the bushes just happen to get in your way then, or will you be caught by one?" He joked with a smile. Luke quickly got the hint to start walking along with her, so did, matching her pace and readying himself to catch her if she fell. "Sad?" He asked, looking at her confused. "Why do you ask that?"

"Only if you don't catch me fiiiirst," She sung a little, giving a small giggle when she was done before she gave him another thoughtful look, "Because-because people are in-in-intoxicated when they kiss you, or because..." She scrunched up her face, trying to organize her thoughts. There was something more she wanted to say but it was hard to access it in her current state, "You are like me but... not, but still... like me... And even when I'm not sad, I'm... I'm kinda sad. So I thought maybe-maybe you're happy because you're sad." Her words made no sense, and in any other state Viola would be driving herself nuts, but that was the wonder of being drunk. All the things that used to bother her just didn't anymore. 

Oh. Well…interesting dare then. Hope it wasn’t a shit kiss.

I cannot say that I have many to compare it to, but don't worry, it was not horrible. 

I’m sorry.

There is no need to be sorry for my own thoughts. Perhaps my mother should be sorry, but there's still a chance no one could change the way I feel about birthdays... There is nothing wrong with them I suppose, I just cannot stop myself from feeling as if they are a false celebration. Just because I am a year older today does not mean I am any different than I was yesterday, or than I will be tomorrow.
