So can we talk about the orientalism that plagues fandom and is present in the selfship community. Yume as a term blew up because of it, it's why white people give their self inserts Asian names and then get mad when someone tells them that's cultural appropriation. Asian terms (and especially Japanese ones) are seen as a cool aesthetic more so than something from an irl culture
I'm so glad people are pointing out how weird it is for non-Japanese people to use yume/yumejoshi/yumedanshi, but I also wanna add that riako/gachi-koi are also included in this conversation.
Infact, I'd argue it's even MORE egregious because both of those terms were NOT MEANT FOR SELFSHIPPING! Their usage originates in idol culture and refer to fans who are deeply in love with a specific idol or one member of a music group, not fictional characters.
And even if Japanese people use those words in the context of falling in love with fictional characters, why aren't selfship or fictosexual/fictoromantic enough to get your point across? Do your ships become that much more special if you insist on using Japanese terms as a non-Japanese person?
