a lot of people dont care about insect biomass collapse bc when they hear we are losing 2.5% of the insect biomass per year they just imagine the cockroach and housefly population decreasing by that much. they dont realize those are among the only ones that will remain unbothered
you can make a little oasis right where you are, and it matters
every year of restoring native plants I see a great increase in the insect populations, and loads of new insects i never saw before (all of them harmless--the insects that are harmful or parasitic on humans are the main ones being unaffected by the decrease in insect populations)
(a large part of) the problem is Plant Sameness. we must restore plant diversity
Also increasing plant diversity and encouraging natives doesn't have to mean carefully curated gardens, for the record.
We're letting roughly 1/4 of our third of an acre property basically reforest itself, with the exception of an area we're keeping clear for apple trees. There's native milkweed and a grove of (also native) Sumac taking over the upper part of the hill. There's always rabbits and hawks around.
We're also letting our side/rear lawn be taken over by clover which, while not native, does flower and is better than turf grass.
In our front yard there are several patches of grass being overtaken by wildflowers - some native, some not - and we just.... aren't mowing those areas. Would planting natives be better, sure! But anything that's not turf grass is better for insects. Long term we do want to replace with native ground covers but there's only so many hours in a day. Also also! We leave the leaves be on large swathes of our property. Many insects overwinter in them.
Sometimes you can do a lot by doing less!

most insane moment in literally all of videogame history is still when parappa the rapper got the urge to shit really bad during a date with sunny and somehow that made him look really hot to her
asked one of my coworkers how she's doing today and she goes "could be better, could be worse," and another coworker nearby who was eavesdropping chimes in with "could be a lil bit o' alligator curse!" i have no idea what he meant by that but i do know that it has been immediately added to the lexicon.

I can now say with confidence the worst pasta shape to spill in your pantry is acini de pepe
My 9-year-old campers are making paper mache eggs with small balloons as the support. One student's balloon popped prematurely and everyone is OBSESSED with having a funeral for it. We all have to wear black on Friday. They're making fake food for the wake. They're writing an obituary that I have to make copies of and distribute. One kid wrote a eulogy for my example egg to read. We're all supposed to wear red for the "sacrifice" of the other balloons tomorrow (we need to pop them to finish the project). The deceased balloon is named Jerry.
Obituary and funeral. The kids made an effigy of Jerry out of paper since the original was thrown away. The funeral was attended by turtles and clay sculptures the campers made this week (you can see one turtle on the left dressed in black). We played sad violin music and made tears to tape on our faces out of construction paper. The other studios brought flowers they had made to lay upon Jerry's coffin. RIP Jerry Da Balloon🎈
i just feel strongly that work shouldnt be the Main Activity of five days out of the week

im realizing very fast that people do not in fact know that sometimes things in stories suck on purpose and it sucking is the point
"this story is misogynistic!!"
>looks inside
>about the pressures of societal misogyny and how its bad
