My last gig as a face painter is adults only day at the zoo where I spend ten uninterrupted hours turning increasingly tipsy women into lisa frank cheetahs until my brain stops processing information normally and by 8pm I’m layering wet gradients of color onto the brush and my eyes are looking at it and my hands are coordinating with my eyes to angle the brush correctly into the paint but I don’t feel like I’m seeing any of it, I don’t really feel like I can see anymore. I’ve been standing in this one spot for ten hours doing the same thing and even though every face is different it’s hard to tell when all I can see are the individual pores where my brushes’ bristles make contact and all I can do is try to angle my hand and my aching back to keep the curve going around the eye all I can do is remember that there is another eye after this and another curve. Then it’s over and I drive halfway home in the dark and all I can do is stay my trajectory. I start thinking that there’s a message in everything but I don’t know what it is and I’m bored of being the one to make the message up because then it doesn’t feel real, if only I could outsource the message to the angels so that I could believe in it more. I guess I get bored because I don’t believe in myself as much as the angels and the angels are inconsistent. But eventually I convince myself the angels are here and then I realize the brakelights I’ve been driving behind are shining from the power of trapped kidnapped fairies whose lifeforces are drained so the light can shine whenever the car slows down and its not just these brakelights its all of them and its awful, the suffering of the fairies for such a mundane thing where electricity could easily be used is so awful but it makes perfect sense because most of the world is like this anyway. And now everything is meaningful.
