one of the most boring lessons I’ve learned is that when a task feels overwhelming, you just have to start doing it. Even if you’re not sure how to do 90% of it, look for one small component that seems close and start there. Sometimes it’s reading one article on the topic, or searching one related term, or literally just googling how to do the task. Do anything other than thinking about it. The process of working on a thing inherently makes it less scary.
Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.
Whether you're looking for a site to help you master the stroke order, or if you're trying to compare characters across different languages, here are some useful sources for character explanations, radical breakdowns, actual examples, character evolutions from Warring States up until now, and many other interesting options.
This one is pretty good for character explanation, radical breakdown and examples e.g. where this character can be found, in what text etc. Only thing to note is that while you can change the interface language to English, the actual explanation is in Traditional Chinese, so something to keep in mind. https://dict.variants.moe.edu.tw/
2. Good for a phonetic breakdown of a character, including Hanyu, Hakka, Yale, Wade etc. Includes different fonts for comparison, and even a calligraphy option which makes me quite happy. https://www.cns11643.gov.tw/
3. Also good for showing the character stroke order and in-depth examples from actual literary works. Includes explanations from Kangxi and 说文解字 -Shuowen Jiezi (the original Han dynasty dictionary showing the actual seal script characters), so quite useful all in all. https://www.zdic.net/

4. Baidu. Self-explanatory but honestly very useful. Just input the character and an entire page dedicated to this character will pop-up.

8. This is more so for Oracle Bone and Bronze script characters, which are honestly quite fasinating. Definitely a favourite database of mine. Hello everyone, I wanted to share with you all some videos I have used to learn Mandarin Chinese that are geared towards children. I think it’s important to practice using children’s media, especially as an intermediate or beginner because it will create a great foundation to build off of. It also helps with listening and pronunciation because the narrators often speak very clearly and at a medium to slow pace.

I recommend these selected playlists for intermediate learners and above, but this channel has plenty of beginner friendly videos and songs, as well as other playlists of stories I did not include. There is no Pinyin or English subtitles on any of the videos listed, but all of them have simplified Chinese subtitles except for “Journey to the West”.

My brother cracked my rib one morning and gave me half of his orange in the evening.
I remember being younger and sometimes wishing to be a single child, to have all the attention and gifts and time but when he was away from home for the first time, I remember crying and stroking his side of the sofa as if blurting out my first wish- for him to be home, without thinking twice, without a shadow of doubt. Even the genie cried. Growing up with a sibling is like being the only people on a stranded boat, constantly figuring out how you can live with them and questioning how you could ever live without them.
One evening, in a fit of anger, I told him how I never wanted him to be my brother and he yelled that he didn't ask for it either. The air smelled like kerosene and my chest was filled with arsenic. I was raging and threw his favorite toy aeroplane down the window, 7 stories of guilt and shame. He cried all night and I wanted to cut off my right hand, the hand that hurt my baby brother. I didn't know if he was ever going to forgive me or even talk to me. The next morning at breakfast, he didn't look at me or say a word, I felt like my chest was about to explode and guilt clouded my vision. But then, I felt a hand quietly holding half of an orange my way.
The only people on a stranded boat. How do you live with them? How could you ever live without them?

There'll be a moment when you realise you're 27 when yesterday you were just 17; and you wouldn't be able to tell how a decade passed away and your life got divided into before and afters. The fury of youth will subdue and nothing will really change but everything will feel different when you look at old photographs and blurry videos taken on cheap mobile phones. Scents will remind you of childhood and certain friends you don't talk to anymore, hangouts will become reunions and mom's burnt pie will become the best food you ever had. And I know on some days you won't be able to show anything of those 10 years but I hope you remember to breathe, and let go of the knot in your chest. I hope you go out in the sun and live a little, because tomorrow is 37.
