Today’s December 23rd birthday belongs to SN Fredrick Conrad Messier, Jr. Fredrick, called ‘Dick’ by his family, was born at home to Fredrick, Sr. and Anna Messier in Cumberland, Rhode Island.
Dick was the 3rd born of 7, the first born son. He was a junior and the apple of his mother's eye. Happy go lucky, gentle and kind. Though he was a big brother to his sisters and brother, he was also an average kid of the 50’s and 60’s, doing whatever young boys did in a small town. He had a paper route and loved playing baseball.
Dick’s father died when Dick was 14, and he had to grow up fast. He saved his money and bought his mother her first color television.
However, the next born was Michael who is about 15 months younger. As brothers do, Michael likes to say Dick learned how to be such a good fighter by perfecting his technique on Mike.
Dick attended and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1966. He was engaged to be married to his high school sweetheart, Joyce. They were planning to be married upon his return from Vietnam, in December, 1969.
He joined the Navy on 9 January 1968 in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended boot camp at NTC Great Lakes, IL.
After his two week leave at home, SA Fredrick Messier reported aboard USS FRANK E EVANS (DD 754) on 8 April 1968. He was assigned to 1st Division and was learning the duties of being at sea. He learned fast, and was promoted to seaman (SN) on 16 March 1969. He often wrote home about his life on board, and because of his since of humor and fun loving ways, he was well liked by his shipmates.
At the time of the collision, Dick was sleeping in 1st Division, forward of and one deck below the mess deck.
SN Fredrick Conrad Messier, Jr. was born this day in 1948 and would have been 21 years old. Had he survived he would be 72 years old today.
