Adobe Creative Cloud (bridge)
For my doodles I usually like to be lazy on my couch and draw on my iPad. I use these apps for this, Autodesk sketchbook and Vectornator, both are free to use.
When I put more effort into the art I make I put myself in front of my computer to have to possibility to use mixed media. When I want to do backgrounds I always start with blocking it out in 3D in Autodesk Maya to get the perspective right. Depending on what I’m doing, I tend to use different softwares to crate my lineart. If it’s architecture, straight lines I go with a vector based software like Adobe Illustratior or the app Vectornator. If I do organic stuff I use either Adobe Photoshop or the app Autodesk sketchbook for the lineart. I also use the same softwares for coloring
To jump between my iPad and PC I use Adobe Creative Cloud
My advice would be to get to know the software, usually if you learn one, you can easily learn another, they tend to have the same basics just different interfaces. If you haven’t done any digital art before, watch some tutorials online, to learn how to translate traditional drawing and painting techniques into digital methods.
One strong suit with digital art is the layering. To stack layers on top of each other make it possible to have your line art ontop and the colors underneath. What will be on top and what will show, is decided by the order you stack the layers.
Another great possibility with digital art is the “post production” the step when you enhance the colors, lights and shadows. You can change the linearts color from black to dark purple, gray, blue or any color to give it a more interesting look. You can merge shadows with colors and use different operations the create different effects. A very common method is the Multiply operation, it simply multiplies each component in the two layers. For this you can easily tint your shadows to give depth into your art. The very last step is grading where I balance the colors, intensity and hues, like adding a filter.
