I’m honestly surprised no one is shipping Lucio/Symmetra yet
Given fandom’s track record for shipping a pairing in spite of *cough BECAUSE OF cough* canon hostility between the two, I’m suprised no one ships one of the few pairs of characters to have history in canon (and aren’t related): Lucio and Symmetra.
Lucio is an open-minded ball of sunshine on rollerblades that I headcanon to be a chatterbox if he thinks the listener will tolerate it. No worries about being subjected to rambles you don’t want to hear: he may be a relentless optimist, but Lucio is not naive. His perception is uncanny.
According to canon, Symmetra is a spy sent by Visknar to Overwatch. But?? I think she genuinely wants to help??
And then there’s the Aspergers syndrome that the fandom has appointed her. I am in love with this fanon, as I’m an aspergers gal myself.
Symmetra is always full of questions - including those that are normally expected from a ditz (or as a joke), but she asks in complete seriousness.
“People say let’s break it up, and they say let’s break it down. Why does no one ever want to break it sideways?”
Everyone else in the room laughs and thinks she’s joking (she’s been used to that for a long time…), but Lucio surprises her when he gives it some serious thought and answers her question the best he can.
It’s the first time someone outside her immediate family has taken her seriously like that.
Later, Lucio is suprised to discover that the architect is willing to listen to his answer when she asks him about why he threw the revolution in the first place. He was suprised that she actually listened, and didn’t seem to get tired of him talking until he realized that the subject had wandered so far from the original topic that he was now talking about the behavior of the birds in his hometown.
She was interested in that, too.
Symmetra was interested in learning everything she could get her hands on, and after that long session of Q&A with Lucio, she started to ask other overwatch members about what daily life was like in their home countries. She asked about how they got into their careers, what that was like, what was this, how did that work…
Mercy had to be the one to tell her that Symmetra’s questions about their personal lives were getting a bit… invasive.
Lucio was the only one that didn’t mind a constant stream of Symmetra’s questions. He had also picked up on her trouble with interpeting social ques, and had no trouble telling her when (and how) she was going overboard.
Symmetra appreciated that.
Lucio apreciated that he had found someone that was not only willing, but happy to listen to him ramble on about whatever tangent was on his mind. She even asked questions to clarify (which usually sent him on another tangent).
Sometimes Lucio would crack up laughing right after she said something, and that was one of the few situations where she had a hard time getting an explanation out of him. Symmetra would make this frank observation so seriously, and Lucio just couldn’t hold it in.
“What is so amusing about this? Widowmaker’s lack of a proper chest covering may be a tactic to distract her opponents! I don’t see any other reason why Tracer was looking for a T-shirt cannon.”
“Nothin’ nothin! Just… don’t stop being you.”
