Ella used to be able to drink to have fun, to lighten her mood, but ever since her miscarriages, she uses wine to dull the pain. She especially will drink heavily when she is around other mothers and will slowly excuse herself from the scene. Without her husband there to lean on because he's been captured in the war, she doesn't know who to turn to.

When he returns home, she tries to hide her addiction for the sake of her husband, but he eventually sees the signs and does what he can to help her. It takes time, but eventually she's able to have girls' nights again where she doesn't fall apart at the seams and can have fun while drinking and not use it as a crutch.
