[Secrets of Homelander's Costume from The Boys] By Adam Savage's Tested
Not sure if it's been shared on here yet, but for all my fellow artists who are The Boys fans, you'll be salivating at the level of detail we get to see in this video featuring Homelander's suit because it's excellent reference material!
I personally love collating a bunch of references like a madman with a murder board whenever I draw anything, particularly character / fan art. I was really hoping we'd get a retrospective look at some The Boys costuming and props, and my wish was granted.
While we're on the subject, another excellent source of reference material for scenery and costumes of The Boys comes in the form of an official Vought international Amazon website. Here we have 360 / panoramic room tours and some 3D model references of Homelander and Butchers outfits. I've used these frequently myself for reference while drawing. I'm not sure how much longer this site will be up for (I've been meaning to screen record it to save the references for future use myself).
This video is made in respect to a prop auction (I'm in no way affiliated or sponsored, fyi) occurring from June 2nd - to June 30th 2026, which also hosts a bunch of props and costumes from the show that would provide great reference material for fan artists and cosplayers, such as soldier Boy's shield.
Through the auction website, we're also blursed with bizarre images like this. It's giving me "Don't talk to me or my son ever again" vibes.
Some lucky (or warped) soul out there will be purchasing the Homelander fursuit. Ok, ok, it's a mascot suit. The Boys x FNAF when?

Edge-lander, Pone-lander and Brit-Lander.
My tablet pen died for good while I was creating these monsters. They are cursed.
I love character designing and redesigning characters. I figured I would make some 'The Boys' Fanart more personal by doing just that. I'm thinking I'll call 'em alt-landers.
Le original characters, donut steel!
Learn more about these variants and my design intentions below. ⬇️
(It's interesting, I promise.)
Edge-lander / Jon Killman 🐦⬛🗡️
➡️ Silver raven motifs replace Homelander's golden eagle accents from his pauldrons to his belt and booties.
➡️ Thigh-high platform heels give him a height boost - he's finally able to look Billy Butcher in the eye, and it probably makes curb stomping people more fun. Inspired by Louboutins, the sole of his stompers are red for added dramatic effect.
➡️ American flag cap shifts from monochrome to coloured, giving it a more dramatic flair.
➡️ Blend of a corset and girdle fashioned of leather contours his waist, fastened with multiple buckles.
➡️ Obligatory fingerless gloves and black nail polish.
➡️ Heterochromia in his left (red) eye, closest to his cold, dark, broken sad boy heart. Attests to his true nature of cruelty. (No shade to heterochromie homies, I have central heterochromia myself).
➡️ The surname 'Killman' plays on Homelander's actual surname 'Gillman'. And it just sounds edgy, it makes sense.
Further comment:
Came to me in a daydream. I'm a goth and thought it would be funny to make Homelander even edgier than he already is. Also, the world needs more goths.
---
Pone-lander / Sir Starry-Spangled Yankee Doodle Dandy 🦄🇺🇸
➡️ His wings carry the colouration of the American flag.
➡️ The name inspiration is fairly obvious, I think it speaks for itself. It's supposed to be on the nose, cutesy and silly, much like most MLP names.
➡️ I think he looks rather cute as a pony as his gloves look like goofy oven mitts.
Further comment:
Elements of harmony got their work cut out with this one. MLP variants, specifically of Homelander, have been done to death. I initially doodled him months to years ago and finalised the design/illustration at last. I grew up with Gen 1 MLP on VHS and I have a soft spot for the franchise as a whole, so I just had to.
It's fun to imagine what sort of interactions he'd have with canon characters. I think the mane six would want to try and redeem him. Maybe they'd give him the Nightmare Moon treatment and depower him, much like what happened in The Boys TV show. In this case, he'd be forced to live out his life as a mortal, a just punishment I think; as naturally; he would hate it. But will he ever accept friendship? If not, they might need to follow up with the stone treatment.

Brit-Lander / Jonathan Gillingham. 🦁🇬🇧
➡️ Overall outfit inspired by the uniform of the UK's colonel-in-chief (of various military regiments), a ceremonial position held currently by King Charles III of the United Kingdom. I felt this was fitting because Homelander himself is a farcical character who pretends to be things he is not. I'll leave my direct opinions of our king out of this and just say, the title and uniform belie an air of importance that isn't really present, which I feel is fitting for Brit-lander. His outfit is a simplified version of this uniform but still bears some flamboyant details such as the aiguillettes (braided gold ropework) work on his breast that make him a little more flashy and pompous than his American counterpart.
➡️ Golden lion motifs replace Homelander's golden eagle accents on Brit-lander, from his pauldrons to his belt and booties. The lion is is a long established symbol of the UK from Royal heraldry to culture and even our currency (coinage) bears the symbol of the lion.
➡️ The most natural difference between Homelander and his British counterpart, of course, would be his cape which now bears the Union Jack (the flag of the United Kingdom of Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England).
➡️ He takes the name Jonathan which I feel we can agree is a bit more of a pompous way to just say 'John'. Following this, the name 'Gillingham' refers to an English place-name and more significantly sounds like a more 'British' version of Gillman, Homelander's actual surname, and I figured it fit well.
Further comment:
In his universe, Vought probably exists in the place of the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) as the VBC (Vought Broadcasting Company). The BBC is a long standing (Est 1922) national entertainment and broadcasting institution in the UK which somewhat mirrors Vought's influence in the USA, in The Boys universe. In reality, the BBC is also subject to quite a bit of criticism and scrutiny, but I won't get into that here. Vought is also long established (1950) and has a sense of monopoly on entertainment and culture within the USA in The Boys universe, so I feel like this fits relatively well.
I also kept thinking, a parody of Fawlty Towers called 'Voughty Towers' with The Boys characters would probably be quite amusing. I reccomend the show if you're interested in British comedy.
I'm a Brit myself, so I was thinking it'd be fun to make a British version of Homelander, inspired as well, in part, by the one-shot comic 'Superman: True Brit'.
---
Last but not least:
For anyone who bothered reading this far, here's something of interest to note. Homelander's surname 'Gillman' is a derivative of a diminutive of 'William' (Say that five times fast), evolving from the French version of the name William (Guillaume). Another way in which Billy (William) Butcher and John Gillman (Homelander) mirror one another, be that intentional or not. I love niche details and facts like this.
Sorry for the tag spam. I tag a lot to link stuff back to my personal website (WIP) easily.
As a long time Billy Joel fan, one of the things I loved about The Boys was that Hughie loved his music too. Billy brings so much beauty and bittersweet feeling into his music. I love his music dearly along with the works of Radiohead and Elliott Smith to name a few of my absolute favs.
I was contemplating on the choice of using 'Piano Man' at the end of The Boys S5 finale, as Billy has a large discography of beautiful, bittersweet songs that could also have been fitting. And then I noticed something incidental that is oddly fitting.
Verse 2:
"Now John at the bar is a friend of mine,
He gets me my drinks for free.
And he's quick with a joke, or-
to light up your smoke,
But there's someplace that he'd rather be.
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As the smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star-
If I could get out of this place"
As we know, Homelander's true name was John Gillman. And Bill / Billy is a nickname for William - namely William Butcher.
I think the last 5 lines of the verse are most pertinent to John. A boy who was nothing but a guiena pig to serve the whims of Vought, the ultimate evil in The Boys universe.
Vought was a guilded cage for the man; and the monster; that John became. It was killing him, quite obviously. Was Homelander ever truly happy? - I'd say no. He constantly yearned for something he would never have, yet something intrinsic to what could have ultimately re-routed his life away from Vought and his 'untimely' death completely: love. Any moments of jubilation for him were short-lived and hollow, derived purely from cruelty, the only thing he ever knew.
We also see Homelander and Butcher converse, almost like old friends, at multiple points within the series - but most notably in S3E1 where Homelander arrives at Butcher's apartment looking for Ryan. I would imagine the last place either of them wish to be is in the company of one another, though they are drawn to one another and mirror each other like two sides of the same coin. They also make constant concessions for one another, most notably their fleeting truce in S3E8 where the pair join forces to protect Ryan against Soldier Boy. Call it bad writing (it is, but we still love it), but they could've killed each other a hundred times over.
'John' within the song itself is a bartender- someone who overlooks and carries out all the orders of the patrons of the bar wherein he works, and the piano man sings. Much like Homelander was Vought's primary pawn; in effect; carrying out the whims of Vought's executives and shareholders.
Perhaps my interpretation here would be giving the writers too much credit. Piano Man just happens to be a great, bittersweet Billy Joel song with tones of regret and lonliness (themes that permeated Homelander's life, He aspired to be loved, but had no concept of how to make that happen organically). Tagging that onto the final episode of a show like The Boys just kind of makes sense.
"Yes, they're sharing a drink-
they call loneliness,
But it's better than drinkin' alone"
---
But hey, it was just something I noticed. I expect to see a fanfic or two based on that verse, or I'll feel double-y robbed after the finale we just got. 😭
[The Boys] AU where Butcher and Ohmlanda both survive the events of S5E8, but Ohmlanda is incacerated for life and Butcher sends him letters to ragebait him. 😂
"Oioi blondie,
Ryan's doin well, thought ya'd wanna know.
Actually, thought ya'd hate to know.
Calls me dad, sweet little sprog he is.
Ya found true admiration in there yet, mate? I bet ya bunkmate bloody loves ya, almost as much as that poor old sod, Terror, did. Bless his soul. Bet it stings that it took ya getting life in the nick to find love like that. Bet your arse stings and-all.
Hughie says I should stop writin ya; it'll put up me blood pressure he says; but I get a real kick outta picturing a snivelling blonde baby clutchin me letters; winding ya up; powerless to do nothin about it. Least you can use 'em as bog roll, right mate? You'll be needin it with that slop they got ya eatin.
See ya next Tuesday,
Billy"

I'm sad that they're both gone, though it was pretty obvious the show was taking that route, as with the comics. I can't help but sympathise with Homelander's origins, though they can never justify his irredeemable and monstrous acts. He needed to be punished. Though I do think it would've been more apt to keep him alive, depowered, and rotting in a cell somewhere.
It also would've opened up the possibility of him regaining his powers at some point - though I'll be the first person to say that the series was already longer than it needed to be, and we already had too much set-up for the Vought Rising spinoff in S5. I'd say what we got was for the best.
While I have many criticisms about the show, it's been wonderful to see these characters clash over the years. I really love these two, despite all their diabolical flaws. I'll miss seeing their antics. But that's the great thing about fanart and AUs - our favourite characters can live hundreds of different lives, living on through our own creativity.

I speak with a South-East London accent, very similar / identical to Butcher's - so I wrote the dialogue with my own speech mannerisms in mind. Hopefully that adds some authenticity to this post. Fackin diabolical, innit! If the sparingly few readers of this post require any clarity on Bri-ish vernacular used, give me a bell and I'll spell it all out for ya.
If anyone knows how to spoiler text on Tumblr, please let me know. I'm not really satisfied with just tagging posts, and this post evidently contains a major spoiler right at the start, so...
Homelander's (Antony Starr's) main feat in the TV Show is deadass carrying this dogshit all the way to season 5. This show could've been 3 seasons or a movie.
Deadass the worst show I've ever watched and if you still disagree with me, come back after the finale and apologise, because it ain't getting better. I say that as a fan of both the show and the comic.
Also hilarious that Eric Crap-ke is mad at fan criticism. Supernatural was worlds better than this - what happened?? I assume Sister Sage lobotomised Crap-ke before he and his team started production on S4 and S5.
"You're just watching the wrong show" Says Crap-ke. Well maybe you're producing the wrong show. 😂😂😂

Playing Tomodatchi Life: Living the Dream! I gave this weird egg I found to this dude and my game crashed, now my save file is corrupted and I can't access my island :'(
🕶️ "Compensating for something?"
I love our Weskers and rotten ass zombie dogs. Guys, you gotta take them dogs to the vet like yesterday, though, DAYUM!
See some WIPs from this piece below. ⬇️
The 'Garmr' just look so 'playful' to me with their slack jaws and tongues lolling out to the side all dopily, I don't find them very threatening even though they're massive decaying murder-y beasties. Thus I imagined an interaction where these two are walking their furry BOW besties and forced to interact because Zeno's garmr wants a game with Albert's cerberus.

Poor Temu Wesker with his wackass old timey lookin ass gun, lmao. 😔
So we're all in agreement that this dude is a literal clone of Wesker, right?
What if that means the one that died in the volcano wasn't the original Albert Wesker either? 🤔
See some WIPs from this piece below. ⬇️
Probably a crossover that’s been thought of or done before, but I kept thinking about it. The Boys x Resident Evil, namely Homelander Vs Albert Wesker.
Mostly thought of it because those two look similar, lol. What horrors would manifest if Vought International from The Boys comic / Amazon TV and Umbrella Corp / Albert Wesker where in collaboration – or conflict? I love goofy crossovers, but I think this one really works.
SPOILERS AHEAD: For the few people who might stumble upon this post who also like the idea, I have a bunch of fun things for you to check out below. Basically a bunch of similarities I realised between the franchises, aaand also how a crossover might play out. Naturally, this will contain spoilers up into season 4 of The Boys tv show as well as at least up to RE5. I had a lot of fun thinking about this.
Also, see some WIPs from this piece below. ⬇️
When I got to thinking, I realised there’s actually a good amount of convergence between not only the properties of The Boys and Resident Evil, but the characters of Homelander and Albert Wesker as well.
Distinct similarities bore in Homelander and Wesker’s upbringing. Power and profit outweigh the value of human lives in the arms race of both Vought and Umbrella, resulting in both men being ‘manufactured’, isolated from any existing family, and groomed to meet the depraved needs and desires of powerful individuals and organisations. This resulted in both Homelander and Wesker becoming deeply damaged and mentally unwell individuals with an inflated sense of ego and lack of empathy. They both continue to exist and act as a result of the same hubris, humans believing that they can create or embody divinity. Its equally interesting and tragic to me that we see two similar characters who are victims themselves of the organisations that conduct so much evil in each respective series. Both men continue to embody and enact the same evils that shaped them, and consequentially carry out some of the most wicked transgressions in their respective series. They never realised the chance to diverge from the paths on which they were set despite their evident potential to do good; to do better; for others, as well as for themselves (because they are both horrible, horrible egomaniacs, evidently).
Similarities arise as well between the very tools that shaped both Homelander and Wesker respectively. The prototype virus; mutant t-virus in Wesker; and Uroboros virus’ effects; when successful mutations occur in hosts; to that of the effects of compound V’s effects in Homelander, provoking the development of eerily similar superhuman abilities. We see both the viruses of Resident Evil and compound V utilised to create B.O.Ws (Bio-organic weapons) or in other words, living; if we’re unlucky, also thinking; weapons. Unsurprisingly, we also see both organisations lose control of their B.O.Ws, whoopsie.
Following from the previous point, many individuals cannot tolerate the introduction of compound V into the body; noting as well as the negative effects of temp V; this is mirrored in the way that many individuals mutate horrifically when introduced to viral strains of Resident Evil.
- (Incidental) Billy Butchers reactions to temp V and compound V (Season 4 of the boys) - prehensile tentacles reminiscent of the canon Uroboros virus’ effects.
Canonically, Homelander (born 1981) is around 21 years Weskers junior (born 1960), it’s entirely possible that, in a crossover AU, Wesker could play a role in Homelander’s creation amidst his tenure with Umbrella. Remember, Albert Wesker is an accomplished scientist who specialises in virology. This would give him an edge in the realm of bioengineering that would be necessary in the development and production of a serum like compound V.
In The Boys comics, Homelanders parents are never specifically identified. That is to say, his father is not Soldier Boy as is so within The Boys TV show. I’m sort of mixing canons here, but with this fact, and the aforementioned similarities between the two, Wesker would not be the most unlikely figure for this role. We also know that Wesker is basically a deadbeat dad, so one might not expect him to have empathy for the circumstances he would be placing child Homelander in, in his absence. Just an interesting thought.
Lastly, Voughts forays into ‘pharmaceutical’ products and genetic enhancement are not dissimilar from that of Umbrella’s, stemming from eugenics. I would argue that Umbrella and Voughts ultimate goals do differ and I believe this may be a point of contention for Wesker in a crossover AU, given his later goals for Uroboros. In a crossover AU, Umbrella could be a Vought subsidiary or entirely/partially funded by them, so its products would be built to suit the desires of shareholders, profit would be the primary focus, not what the products of Umbrella can achieve (In Weskers mind, purification and evolution of the human race).
I had to add the actual story idea as an image due to the character limit. 😭
Also, here's that artwork WIP:
Throwback to some Bella Sara pones. Farah, Elemyn, Abenaki, Ariistos, Mikiko.
I loved collecting those cards back in the day. Gosh, that was almost 20 years ago!!

Little 3D scene inspired by the panel from The Boys comic issue #65 where Ωhmlanda kills- (keep reading, spoiler).
See some WIPs from this piece below. ⬇️
-the president.
Also made a version that's framed a little more like the actual comic panel. I highly reccomend reading the original comic.
And of course, some WIPS. At lot of the actual stage (the oval office) isn't actually shown in the final piece. 😅
I can't wait to see how the TV Show ends next year!!
