"𝙱𝚄𝚃  𝚃𝙷𝙴𝙽  𝚃𝙷𝙸𝚂  𝙾𝙽𝙴  𝙵𝚁𝙾𝙼  𝚃𝚆𝙾  𝚈𝙴𝙰𝚁𝚂  𝙻𝙰𝚃𝙴𝚁   —   "   he's  worked  up  into  a  frenzy,   practically  foaming  at  the  mouth  as  he  shoves  another  heavy  tome  across  the  table  to  saretha.   "directly  contradicts  mareno's  findings!"   vaelen  runs  a  long-fingered  hand  through  untidy  hair.   he  had  styled  it  for  the  day,   to  try  and  be  respectful  in  observance,   but  with  the  day  of  remembrance  coming  to  an  end  outside  the  walls  of  the  university,   he's  too  absorbed  in  research  to  keep  the  sweat  and  finger  oils  out  of  too-long  tawny  locks  any  longer.   they  leave  for  skyhold  first  thing  in  the  morning,   but  vaelen  and  saretha  couldn't  miss  the  opportunity  to  take  advantage  of  orlais's  fine  resources,   so  they   —   snuck  away  just  after  dinner.   "i  still  don't  understand  any  of  this,   and  i'm  starting  to  wonder  how  much  i  actually   —   want  to."   he  pushes  back  from  the  table  somewhat.   even  he's  overwhelmed  by  the  study  of  fade  and  rift  magic.   "leave  this  to  solas,   go  back  to   —   mending  minds."

Saretha  doesn’t  reach  for  the  tome  right  away.  She  watches  Vaelen  instead  the  frantic  energy  in  his  hands,  the  way  frustration  has  begun  to  hollow  out  his  voice  and  something  in  her  expression  softens,  concern  threading  quietly  through  her  usual  calm. "Contradictions  don’t  mean  you’re  failing,"  she  says  gently.  “They  mean  the  truth  is  bigger  than  the  first  person  who  tried  to  explain  it.”  Only  then  does  she  pull  the  book  closer,  thumbing  the  worn  edge  of  a  page  without  truly  reading.  "Fade  theory  was  never  meant  to  be  neat.  If  it  were,  it  wouldn’t  keep  breaking  the  world.” At  the  mention  of  Solas  she  adds.  “Solas  doesn’t  understand  it  because  he’s  better  than  us.  He  understands  it  because  he’s  willing  to  stand  in  places  most  people  would  run  from.  Her  gaze  lifts  to  him  then,  gentler.  “But  that  doesn’t  mean  you  or  me  or  anybody  else  should  have  to  follow  him  there.”  A  small  pause.  “Mending  minds  isn’t  lesser  work,  Vaelen.  It’s  the  part  that  keeps  the  rest  of  us  human  after  we  stare  too  long  into  things  that  aren’t.”

⋰⏆◝ﾉ     ℂ𝕆𝕃𝔼𝕋𝕋𝔼  𝕊𝔼ℝ𝔸𝕌𝕃𝕋     ⤐     saretha  valetha  .

"𝙻𝙸𝙺𝙴  𝙸𝚃  𝙾𝚁  𝙽𝙾𝚃,   𝚃𝙷𝙴𝙰𝚃𝚁𝙴  𝙸𝚂  𝙰𝙽  𝙾𝚁𝙻𝙴𝚂𝙸𝙰𝙽  tradition,   particularly  on  the  annums."   with  a  rather  unladylike  sniffle,   lettie  slides  even  further  down  in  her  seat  and  flicks  a  kernel  of  popcorn  into  her  mouth.   "i'll  be  damned  if  i  miss  out."   her  gaze  turns  from  the  stage  to  the  woman  in  the  seat  next  to  her   —   then  she  does  a  small  but  deeply  unsubtle  double-take,   and  her  nose  wrinkles  when  she  sees  saretha's  ears.   it  shouldn't  be  a  surprise  to  see  an  elf  in  the  theatre.   not  in  the  slightest.   half  the  cast  are  elves,   regardless  of  their  comparative  rarity  elsewhere  in  val  royeaux.   the  fact  colette  is  caught  off  guard  is  an  unfortunate  artifact  of  time  spent  away  from  her  dear  orlais.   "i'll  speak  my  peace,"   she  murmurs,   slowly  turning  her  attention  back  to  the  performance.   "they  already  don't  want  me  here."   a  musical  number  begins,   orchestral  theme  swelling.   "ugh."   she  points  to  the  actress  standing  center  stage.   "see,   this  is  exactly  what  i  mean.   sermon."   was  she  the  one  who  said  that?   "flies  in  the  face  of  historical  accuracy  just  to  push  the  narrative  of  the  chantry.   she  was  put  to  death  for  that,   certainly  not  celebrated  for  it."

Saretha  catches  the  double-take  …  of  course  she  does,  but  she  doesn’t  bristle.  She  only  lets  her  mouth  tilt  into  something  wry  and  knowing,  eyes  still  trained  on  the  stage  as  if  the  performers  are  far  more  interesting  than  the  judgment  flickering  beside  her.  “Orlais  does  love  its  traditions,”  she  murmurs  back,  unbothered.  “Especially  the  ones  that  look  best  from  a  velvet  seat.” At  the  word  sermon,  she  huffs  softly,  almost  fond.  “You’re  right.  They  turn  her  into  a  symbol  because  it’s  easier  than  admitting  she  frightened  them.”  Her  gaze  sharpens,  tracking  the  actress  as  the  music  swells.  “Martyrs  are  much  more  palatable  once  they’re  safely  dead.” She  glances  sideways  then,  voice  low  enough  to  slip  between  the  notes.  “If  they  already  don’t  want  you  here,  you  might  as  well  be  honest  about  it.”  A  beat.  “Besides,  history  deserves  at  least  one  person  in  the  audience  who  remembers  it  didn’t  happen  this  neatly.”

"𝙰𝙱𝚂𝙾𝙻𝚄𝚃𝙴𝙻𝚈  𝚃𝙴𝚁𝚁𝙸𝙱𝙻𝙴  𝚂𝙴𝙻𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽  𝙵𝙾𝚁  𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝙳𝙰𝚈,"   𝚂𝙷𝙴  𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙼𝙴𝙽𝚃𝚂  to  the  person  with  the  poor  luck  to  be  sitting  next  to  her.   she's  slouching  in  her  seat  so  as  not  to  be  recognized,   but  can't  help  but  let  her  criticism  loose.   with  a  sneer,   she  reaches  into  her  popcorn  bucket.   "i  mean   —   "   she  gestures  towards  the  stage  for  emphasis,   and  sprays  popcorn  across  the  row  in  front  of  her.   "of  all  the  lovely,   haunting  stories  they  could  have  told  for  the  day,   they  pick  some  drivel  about  andraste  and  sacrifice?   please,"   she  scoffs,   stuffing  popcorn  into  her  mouth  in  a  way  that  somehow  manages  to  still  be  graceful.   "what  a  joke.   waste  of  the  annum,   is  what  it  is."

Saretha  startles  only  a  little  at  the  commentary,  then  lets  out  a  quiet  huff  of  laughter  she  quickly  smothers  behind  her  hand.  She  leans  closer  not  enough  to  draw  attention,  just  enough  to  be  heard  over  the  murmurs  of  the  crowd.  “Careful,”  she  murmurs  dryly.  “If  the  wrong  person  hears  you,  that  popcorn  might  be  the  least  of  what’s  flying.” Her  eyes  flick  briefly  to  the  stage,  then  back  again,  one  brow  lifting.  “You’re  not  wrong,  though.  Tragedy  loses  its  bite  when  it’s  polished  into  a  sermon.”  A  pause,  softer,  amused.  “They  always  forget  the  messy  parts.  The  doubt.  The  people  who  didn’t  want  to  be  symbols.” She  reaches  out,  nudging  a  stray  kernel  back  into  the  bucket  with  one  finger.  “Still,”  Saretha  adds  under  her  breath,  “complaining  through  the  whole  thing  is  half  the  fun.  I  assume  that’s  why  you  stayed?”

"Oh I would not be offended, you are a busy woman. I cannot expect you to keep me entertained all of the time now can I?" Zevran laughed his nose and eyes scrunching as he did so. The admittance of missing the fifth blight put Zevran at ease. He sometimes felt rather insane for missing one of the worst events of this age so far. It was such a defining moment in his life both in the best and worst ways. How could he not miss a time where he'd grown and learned so much and for once was surrounded by true friends that he didn't need to watch carefully.

Leliana was so much like Zevran, their histories so similar that sometimes he felt that she was the only one of that group that truly understood and saw him. "Yes do not forget that we survived the blight but most importantly we survived the most questionable cooking in all of Thedas... that I do not miss." That was somewhat of a lie, sometimes Zevran missed Morrigans questionable mushrooms.

Zevran loved asking Leliana about her hobby, there was a genuine spark of joy in her eyes and voice that sometimes was only present when she talked about The Maker. "Please I would rather eat glass than eat Schmooples. He is his most delightful when he's doing his tricks." He let out a dramatic sigh, sagging his shoulders and shaking his head. "I cannot believe that we can get numerous strange things and books but the Antivan woman who is handling the accounts cannot get Antivan olives! Truly this is a traitor to her countrymen." Zevran then chuckled breaking character, maybe he should quit assassinating and go in to opera.

His eyes softened, he'd make all the time in the world for his friend if he could. Zevran nudged her back. "There is no one I would much rather spend the quiet with but I think you know already know this."

Leliana’s  smile  lingered  at  his  laughter,  genuine  and  unguarded  in  a  way  she  allowed  herself  only  rarely.  “Entertained?”  she  echoed  softly.  “Zevran,  you  have  always  managed  that  without  any  effort  on  my  part.”  Her  tone  was  fond,  touched  with  the  ease  of  long  familiarity. She  inclined  her  head  at  the  mention  of  the  Blight,  her  expression  thoughtful  rather  than  heavy.  “It  shaped  us,”  she  said  simply.  “For  better  and  worse.  Missing  it  does  not  make  you  strange.  It  means  you  remember  who  you  were  when  you  were  allowed  to  be  more  than  careful.”  A  pause,  then  with  dry  amusement,  “And  yes.  Surviving  the  cooking  may  have  been  our  greatest  triumph.” At  his  dramatic  defense  of  Schmooples,  her  laugh  came  quietly,  breathy  in  the  cold  air.  “He  is  delightful,”  she  agreed,  unrepentant.  “And  completely  innocent  of  the  accusations  leveled  against  him.”  Her  eyes  glinted.  “The  kitchens,  on  the  other  hand,  remain  suspect.” She  shook  her  head  lightly  at  his  mock  outrage  over  the  olives.  “I  will  note  your  concerns,”  she  promised,  solemn  enough  to  make  the  tease  land.  “Though  I  suspect  the  accounts  will  survive  your  disappointment.” When  he  nudged  her  back,  she  did  not  pull  away.  Instead,  she  let  her  shoulder  rest  against  his  for  a  heartbeat  longer  than  necessary,  her  gaze  still  on  the  distant  courtyard  below.  “I  do  know,”  she  said  quietly.  “And  I  am  grateful  for  it.” For  a  moment,  she  let  the  quiet  settle  again,  unbroken  and  shared.  Then,  softly,  “Whatever  comes  next,  I  hope  we  remember  this.  That  even  now,  we  can  still  find  moments  that  belong  to  us.”

Develva nodded at Saretha in understanding, despite being human Saretha had respected her boundries. "When you discover something nobody has thought of, it can make you very unpopular" She had theories on why a Crow found themselves in her encampment anyway. Perhaps the word of her discoveries escaped Emerald Graves into the unknown.

It was better if Saretha did not ask about the Crow and would leave Develva to her peace. "Serannas" she said in Elvish in parting, still hunched over her supplies

Saretha  inclined  her  head  at  the  word,  recognition  flickering  across  her  features  at  the  elven  farewell.  “Serannas,”  she  answered  softly  in  kind,  careful  to  keep  the  pronunciation  respectful  rather  than  practiced  to  impress.  There  was  something  grounding  in  the  exchange  two  elves  acknowledging  one  another  without  expectation. She  lingered  only  a  moment  longer,  long  enough  to  add,  “For  what  it’s  worth…  unpopularity  tends  to  follow  the  people  who  change  things.”  No  judgment  in  her  tone,  only  quiet  certainty,  the  kind  earned  through  experience.  “If  word  of  your  work  has  reached  farther  than  the  Graves,  it’s  because  it  matters.” Then  Saretha  stepped  back  fully,  turning  away  without  another  glance  at  the  worktable  or  the  dagger,  leaving  Develva  with  her  experiments  …  and  her  peace  intact.

"𝙰𝙷,   𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁𝚈  𝙼𝙾𝚁𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶  𝚆𝙴  𝚆𝙰𝙺𝙴  𝚄𝙿  𝚄𝙽𝙳𝙴𝚁  the  maker  is  a  good  one."   she's  far,   far  too  chipper  and  what's  worse  is  she  knows  it.   any  course  correction  will  just  serve  to  push  the  nervous  optimism  even  higher.   she  grabs  one  of  the  mismatched  mugs  and  fills  it  with  the  sludge  that  passes  for  coffee  when  a  dwarf  is  in  charge  of  packing  rations.   "i  do  hope  your  expectations  for  this  aren't  too  high,   though."

ysolde  watches  as  lark  joins  her  by  the  fire,   stretching  out  like  the  little  fennec  he  is.   she's  grateful  for  the  company.   being  alone  with  her  thoughts  is   —   never  her  preference.   "i  think  i  was  told  something  very  similar,"   she  tells  him  with  a  laugh.   "it's  quite  bad  as  a  woman.   and  a  healer!   everyone  expects  me  to  be  their  mother."   and  she  is  in  some  ways.   but  cooking  is   —   certainly  not  one  of  them,   no.   "redcliffe  village  can't  be  that  far  off,   though.   feel  like  i  can  see  it  in  the  distance,   there."   eve  takes  another  sip  of  her  coffee  and  swallows  with  a  grimace.   "have  you  ever  been?   i've  heard  some  really  fascinating  things  about  the  place.   a  bit  scary."   eve  doesn't  know  lark  very  well,   he  seems  to   —   come  and  go,   but  he's  so  much   —   lighter  than  most  other  people.   it's  nice.

Lark  let  out  a  soft,  amused  breath  at  that,  cradling  his  mug  like  it  was  doing  him  a  personal  favor.  “You  say  that  now,”  he  replied,  glancing  up  at  the  sky  as  if  reconsidering  the  Maker’s  early-morning  judgment,  “but  I’m  fairly  certain  the  Maker  and  I  are  still  negotiating  terms  before  sunrise.”  He  took  another  cautious  sip,  winced  again,  then  shrugged.  “Still  worth  it.  I  think  this  coffee  could  wake  the  dead.  Or  at  least  threaten  them  into  consciousness.” At  her  comment  about  expectations,  he  snorted  quietly.  “Trust  me,  mine  are  rock-bottom.  Anything  warm  that  isn’t  trying  to  poison  me  outright  counts  as  a  success.”  He  shifted  a  little  closer  to  the  fire,  stretching  his  legs  out  with  a  sigh  that  sounded  like  it  came  from  somewhere  deep  in  his  bones.  “And  yeah,  I  get  that.  People  hear  ‘healer’  and  suddenly  assume  you’ve  got  soup  recipes  memorized  and  endless  patience.”  A  crooked  smile  tugged  at  his  mouth.  “For  what  it’s  worth,  I  don’t  need  a  mother.  Just  someone  who  won’t  let  me  starve  before  noon.” He  followed  her  gaze  toward  the  distant  suggestion  of  Redcliffe,  squinting  into  the  morning  light.  “I’ve  been  once.  Briefly,”  he  said.  “  It’s…  got  history.  Some  of  it  rough.  But  the  people  are  good,  and  the  food  usually  makes  up  for  the  rest.”  He  glanced  up  again  in  the  direction  she’d  indicated,  squinting  like  that  might  magically  conjure  rooftops.  “A  little  scary,  sure.  But  most  places  worth  seeing  are.”

"𝙶𝙾𝙾𝙳  𝙼𝙾𝚁𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶!"   𝚂𝙷𝙴  𝙶𝚁𝙴𝙴𝚃𝚂  𝚆𝙰𝚁𝙼𝙻𝚈  𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷  𝙰  𝚂𝙼𝙸𝙻𝙴.   curled  up  on  the  ground  near  the  roaring  campfire,   ysolde  has  both  hands  wrapped  around  a  steaming  mug  of  very  shitty  coffee.   they're  the  first  ones  awake   —   their  arrival  in  redcliffe  from  skyhold  had  been  delayed  by  bandits,   and  most  were  doing  their  best  to  catch  up  on  rest  on  a  day  that  would  hopefully  not  see  battle.   but  eve  never  sleeps  well  away  from  home,   so  she  never  seems  to  do  much  sleeping.   the  morning  is  a  bit  chilly,   but  so  close  to  the  fire,   it's  almost  too  warm  for  her,   even  dressed  down.   lark  might  not  agree  on  the  temperature's  comfort,   though.   "can  i  get  you  some  coffee?"   there's  a  pot  hanging  over  the  fire,   and  more  mugs  set  out  nearby.   "i  haven't  made  breakfast,   though.   i  figured  the  hike  into  town  might  be  worth  a  decent  meal,   instead  of  just   —   more  rations.   i'm  not  a  very  good  cook,   either."

Lark  blinked  awake  a  little  more  fully  at  her  voice,  shoulders  hunching  as  he  edged  closer  to  the  fire  like  it  might  personally  forgive  him  for  the  hour.  “Maker,  good  might  be  generous,”  he  said,  rubbing  at  one  eye  with  the  heel  of  his  hand  before  glancing  at  the  mug.  “But  I’ll  absolutely  take  coffee.  Bad  coffee.  Questionable  coffee.  Whatever  that  is.”  He  accepted  it  with  both  hands,  breathing  in  the  steam  like  it  was  sacred.  “Honestly,  I’ve  had  worse.  Probably.  Maybe.” He  settled  down  near  the  fire,  boots  stretched  out,  clearly  grateful  for  the  warmth  now  that  he’d  stopped  pretending  he  wasn’t  cold.  “A  real  meal  in  town  sounds  like  a  miracle,”  he  added  with  a  faint  grin.  “And  for  what  it’s  worth,  I’m  not  much  of  a  cook  either.  Last  time  I  tried,  someone  politely  suggested  I  stick  to  knives  meant  for  fighting  …  I  mean,  they  were  right,  I  tried  it…  wasn't  great.  ”  He  took  a  sip,  winced,  then  smiled  anyway.  “Stil thanks.  For  this,  every  little  thing  helps  right  now.  For  some  reason,  waking  up  early  just  never  comes  naturally  to  me.  "

"𝚁𝙴𝙲𝙾𝙽𝙽𝙰𝙸𝚂𝚂𝙰𝙽𝙲𝙴."   𝚂𝙷𝙴  𝚃𝚄𝚁𝙽𝚂  𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝚆𝙾𝚁𝙳  𝙾𝚅𝙴𝚁  𝙸𝙽  𝙷𝙴𝚁  𝙼𝙾𝚄𝚃𝙷,   contemplating  it.   it  sounds  orlesian.   maybe  the  humans  need  different  standards  because  they  face  different  dangers.   no  elf  would  throw  one  of  their  own  to  the  enemy  as  bait,   she  thinks,   but  it's  true  that  her  people  do  not  have  to  fear  the  forest  as  the  humans  do.   she  does  not  know  the  answer,   but  it's   —   something  to  think  on.   "so  you  are  not  a  scout  who  spies,   you  are  a  scout  who  helps  to  keep  his  people  safe?"   mouth  turns  down  in  a  little  frown  of  consideration  and  head  falls  to  one  side  on  her  shoulders.   "i  can  respect  that."   she  pushes  back  off  the  tree  with  one  foot,   snug  in  her  halla  leather  boot,   and  keeps  moving  through  the  brush  just  ahead  of  lark.   "i  do  not  have  an  idea,"   she  tells  him  with  a  little  laugh.   “i  am  trying  to  follow  your  lead,   but  i  fear  we  may  both  be  lost  before  long.”   moving  with  heavy,   deliberate  steps,   the  crunch  of  dirt  and  branches  is  the  only  sound  for  a  moment   —   maybe  the  first  silent  moment  since  she's  come  across  lark.   "does  the  rock  have  a  name?   if  it  is  a  bear,   it  must  have  a  name."

Lark  hummed  thoughtfully  at  that,  brows  knitting  as  he  walked,  boots  crunching  a  little  too  loudly  against  the  dirt  compared  to  her  sure-footed  silence.  “Yeah,”  he  said  after  a  beat,  like  he  was  testing  the  words  himself.  “That’s…  actually  a  better  way  of  putting  it.  I  look  first  so  other  people  don’t  have  to.  Or  so  they  have  a  chance  to  not  walk  straight  into  something  ugly.”  He  glanced  at  her  back,  then  added  quickly,  “Not  that  I  always  succeed.  But  I  try.  A  lot.” Her  admission  made  him  snort  softly,  half-amused,  half-resigned.  “Oh,  good.  Perfect.  Two  people  confidently  following  no  idea  at  all.”  He  lifted  a  hand,  palm  up,  as  if  weighing  invisible  options.  “This  is  usually  the  part  where  I’d  pretend  I  meant  to  do  that.  For  morale.”  He  slowed  a  fraction,  eyes  scanning  the  brush  more  carefully  now,  the  humor  easing  into  focus.  “We’re  not  completely  lost  yet,  though.  I  promise.  Mostly.” At  her  last  question,  he  stalled  outright,  blinking.  “A  name?”  A  crooked  smile  tugged  at  his  mouth  as  he  considered  it  far  more  seriously  than  necessary.  “I…  don’t  think  it  does.  Which  feels  like  an  oversight,  now  that  you  mention  it.”  He  shrugged  lightly.  “Maybe  that’s  why  it’s  been  so  hard  to  find.  No  one  listens  to  a  nameless  bear  rock.”  A  beat.  “If  we  do  find  it,  though,  you  can  name  it.  I  think  that’s  only  fair.  You’ll  have  earned  it.”

"Its an unpopular thing to do, push boundaries" Develva had gotten enough grief about it. From humans, from dwarves, from other elves! Was this human trying to find a work around to ruin her hard research? "Often times, I find they're not pushed enough." She put the dagger back. "That crow only left with a scarred ego and a nightmare. Nothing more. I would not willingly invite their ilk to target this encampment" Develva crossed her arms and continued to watch Saretha closely. It was strange to have someone from the outside so interested in your work. Unless she was here trying to find ways to infiltrate. Develva then tried to dissuade from further conversation "Is there anything else you need to give me or can you leave me to my peace?"

Saretha  accepted  the  dismissal  without  offense,  though  she  didn’t  retreat  just  yet.  She  inclined  her  head,  thoughtful  rather  than  cowed.  “Unpleasant  scents  and  sounds  are  often  enough,”  she  said  quietly.  “Pain  teaches  people  to  be  careful.  Discomfort  teaches  them  to  stay  away.”  A  pause,  then,  softer  still,  “Your  Keeper  is  fortunate  you  listen  even  when  you  don’t  agree.” At  the  edge  of  Develva’s  scrutiny,  Saretha  let  her  hands  open,  empty.  “I  didn’t  come  to  pry  or  replicate  your  work.  I’ve  had  enough  of  people  trying  to  own  what  they  don’t  understand.”  Her  gaze  flicked  briefly  to  the  ground,  then  back  up.  “I  push  boundaries  too.  That  tends  to  make  enemies.  I  thought  it  might  be…  familiar.”  She  took  a  step  back  then,  honoring  the  space  Develva  had  asked  for.  “Nothing  else,”  Saretha  said  simply.  “I’ll  leave  you  to  your  peace.  But  if  you  ever  decide  you  want  to  compare  notes  no  obligations,  no  Inquisition  strings  I’d  listen.”  A  faint,  knowing  smile.  “And  I  won’t  ask  about  the  Crow.”

"𝚈𝙾𝚄  𝙰𝚁𝙴  𝙴𝚇𝙲𝙴𝙻𝙻𝙴𝙽𝚃  𝙰𝚃  𝚈𝙾𝚄𝚁  𝙹𝙾𝙱  𝙾𝙵  𝚂𝚃𝙰𝙽𝙳𝙸𝙽𝙶  somewhere  and  seeing  if  you  are  shot  at?"   she  can  barely  get  the  words  out,   she's  dissolving  into  a  fit  of  giggles.   laughing  so  hard  it  shakes  her  whole  tiny  form,   she  has  to  stop   —   which  is  good  regardless,   he's  already  fallen  behind,   no  wonder  he  got  himself  lost  before   —   and  lean  against  a  tree  for  support.   "why  is  this  a  job  where  you  come  from?   and  why  are  you  so  good  at  it?"   she's  nearly  doubled  over  with  laughter  at  this  point.   she  really  isn't  trying  to  make  fun  of  him.   not  that  he'd  be  able  to  tell,   but  she  finds  him  oddly  delightful.   like  a  sweet  little  shiny  bug.   how  odd.   perhaps  if  more  humans  were  like  this  one,   the  two  peoples  would  not  be  enemies.   but  then  again   —   he  did  warn  her  he  is  not  as  harmless  as  he  looks.   the  thought  sobers  her   —   it  is  wise  to  believe  people  when  they  tell  you  what  they  are.   the  smile  flickers,   falters,   but  does  not  vanish  entirely.   adanna  waits  for  alaric  to  catch  up  to  her,   watching  him  with  a  twinkle  her  eye.   "a  rock   —   that  looks  like  a  crouching  bear."   she  shakes  her  head  at  him.   “you  will  have  to  identify  this  rock  for  me.   i  think  perhaps  i  will  have  no  imagination  to  recognize  it.   you  would  not  survive  as  a  scout  for  my  people.   i  can  only  assume  yours  have  much  lower  standards.”

Lark  let  out  a  startled  laugh  at  that,  half-choked  as  he  hurried  to  close  the  distance  she’d  already  put  between  them.  “I  …  look,  when  you  say  it  like  that,  it  sounds  significantly  worse  than  it  is,”  he  protested,  breathless  but  grinning  despite  himself.  “It’s  more…  reconnaissance.  Observing.  Making  sure  no  one  else  gets  shot  at  first.”  He  waved  a  hand  vaguely,  as  if  that  might  rescue  the  explanation.  “Sometimes  I’m  very  good  at  it.  Sometimes  the  job  description  catches  up  to  me.  Today’s  leaning  toward  the  second.” He  slowed  as  she  did,  eyeing  the  tree  she’d  braced  herself  against  like  it  had  personally  betrayed  him.  Her  laughter  was  infectious,  even  if  it  was  at  his  expense,  and  he  scrubbed  a  hand  through  his  hair,  sheepish.  “For  what  it’s  worth,  I  don’t  usually  lead  with  the  bear-shaped  rock.  That’s  that’s  a  desperation  landmark.”  He  paused,  then  added,  defensively,  “It’s  very  distinctive  once  you  see  it.  Ears  and  everything.  Probably.” At  her  last  comment,  he  snorted  softly.  “Lower  standards,  maybe.  Or  just  different  ones.”  His  tone  stayed  light,  but  there  was  something  steadier  underneath  it  now  as  he  matched  her  pace  again.  “You  lot  learn  the  land  like  it’s  part  of  you.  We  learn  it  like…  a  problem  we’re  trying  to  solve  before  it  kills  us.”  A  crooked  smile  tugged  at  his  mouth.  “So  deal.  If  we  find  the  bear  rock,  I  get  one  point  for  competence.  If  we  don’t,  I’ll  defer  entirely  to  your  vastly  superior  judgment  and  pretend  this  was  your  idea  all  along.”

𝙰𝙽𝙳  𝙽𝙾𝚆  𝙷𝙴  𝚆𝙰𝙽𝚃𝚂  𝙰  𝚂𝙼𝙸𝙻𝙴.   "𝙳𝙾  𝙽𝙾𝚃  𝙿𝚄𝚂𝙷  your  luck,"   she  warns  sternly,   no  trace  of  humor,   as  they  awkwardly  move  arms  up  and  down  in  a  crude  handshake.   brow  knit,   adanna  looks  down  at  their  clasped  hands  curiously,   resisting  the  urge  to  twist  at  the  shoulder  and  inspect  things  further.   but  there  is  no  time,   and  she  should  not  push  her  luck  either.   there  are  just   —   so  few  opportunities  to  examine  the  shem  up  close  without  one  side  being  in  imminent  danger.   finally,   he  lets  go,   and  her  eyes  find  his  face  again,   still  studying  him  curiously.   she  can  only  stand  and  blink  as  he  continues  talking,   this  time  about   —   stables?   horses?   head  falls  to  one  side  as  she  listens.   "the   —   ?   have  you  tried  simply  talking   —   less?"   now  she  laughs.   maybe  at  him.   maybe  a  little  with  him,   too.   and  then  he  laughs  again,   and  she  softens  decidedly. 

hands  find  the  strap  of  her  quiver,   somewhat  nervously  hanging  on,   and  she  falls  backwards  on  her  feet,   taking  a  step  down  the  ridge  and  away  from  lark  again.   "you  are   —   welcome.   i  guess.   keep  up,   alright?   i  will  not  be  held  responsible  to  your  people  if  you  fall  behind  and  are  lost."   without  another  word,   donni  turns  on  her  heel  and  starts  walking  in  the  direction  lark  seemed  to  be  going  some  minutes  ago.   "it  is  this  way,   yes?   do  you  know  what  landmarks  we  are  looking  for?"

Lark  opened  his  mouth  like  he  had  a  very  confident  answer  ready  and  waiting  —  then  promptly  closed  it  again.  “Talking  less.  Right.  Revolutionary  concept.  Might  change  my  whole  life.”  He  tried  for  a  straight  face,  failed,  and  landed  on  a  small,  sheepish  grin  instead.  “I’ll,  uh…  workshop  it.” He  fell  into  step  beside  her  —  or  more  accurately,  slightly  behind,  because  for  someone  threatening  to  let  him  get  lost  forever,  she  moved  like  the  wind  had  somewhere  else  to  be.  “And  no  worries,  if  I  vanish,  the  Inquisition  already  thinks  I  fall  into  holes  on  purpose.  It’ll  just  add  to  the  mystery.”  The  comment  slipped  out  before  he  could  stop  it,  hands  gesturing  vaguely  like  he  could  soften  the  absurdity  with  motion.  “Not  that  disappearing  is  the  plan.  Just  stating  worst  case  scenario…  very  badly.” Her  question  snapped  him  back  into  focus,  and  he  straightened  slightly.  “Landmarks,  right.  Yes.  There’s  a”  he  pointed  ahead,  then  immediately  second-guessed  himself  and  lowered  his  hand,  “a  rock.  A  very  large  rock.  Which  sounds  useless,  I  know,  but  it  looks  like  a  crouching  bear  if  you  squint  at  it  long  enough.  Or  if  the  sun  hits  it  right.  Or  if  you  have  imagination.”  He  cleared  his  throat.  “  I'm  new  to  this  place  specifically  …  I  have  seen  many  places,  forests,  and  villages.  This  one  sadly  isn't  one  of  them.  Usually  I'm  actually  pretty  competent,  some  would  say  even  excellent  at  my  job.  I'm  having  an  off  day  today.  ”

𝙷𝚄𝙼𝙰𝙽𝚂  𝙰𝚁𝙴  𝚂𝚄𝙲𝙷  𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙰𝙽𝙶𝙴  𝙲𝚁𝙴𝙰𝚃𝚄𝚁𝙴𝚂.   "𝙰𝙻𝙻  𝙾𝙵  𝚃𝙷𝙴  inquisitors  i  have  spoken  with  make  very  little  sense  when  they  speak,"   she  comments  lightly,   watching  him  ramble  with  the  expression  one  might  otherwise  see  at  a  nug  exhibition  in  orlais.   "i  cannot  imagine  how  you  get  anything  done  at  all."   eyes  fixed  on  lark  as  she  does  so,   adanna  reaches  for  her  quiver  and  replaces  the  loose  arrow.   haltingly,   she  approaches  lark,   stopping  a  few  feet  short  of  him.   delicate  features  pinch  up  as  though  she's  in  pain,   gaze  low,   on  the  forest  floor.   then  she  looks  up  at  him,   and  awkwardly  extends  her  right  hand  in  a  very  stiff  handshake.   with  a  little  roll  of  dark  eyes  and  a  sharp  exhale,   head  waggles  on  her  shoulders  like  a  child  making  a  show  of  reluctant  obedience.   "is  this  not  the  way  it  is  done?"   she  asks  with  a  little  huff  of  annoyance.   "how  your  kind  greet  each  other?   i  am   —   trying  to  show  you  that  i  now  mean  you  no  harm."

Lark  blinked  at  her  outstretched  hand  like  it  was  a  puzzle  someone  had  handed  him  upside  down.  It  took  him  a  half-second  too  long  to  react,  and  when  he  did,  his  grip  landed  somewhere  between  careful  and  oh  Maker  she  probably  thinks  I’m  made  of  soap.  “No,  yes  …  I  mean,  yes,  that  is…  that  is  how  it’s  normally  done,”  he  managed,  shaking  her  hand  with  the  uncertain  precision  of  someone  afraid  to  startle  a  wild  animal  or  break  a  cultural  treaty  in  one  motion.  “Usually  it  comes  with  a  smile,  but  considering  the  arrow  situation,  I’ll  take  the  hand.” He  let  go  slowly,  almost  ceremoniously,  as  though  returning  a  borrowed  item.  “And  for  the  record,  most  of  us  don’t  mean  to  sound  like  we  make  no  sense.  It  just…  sort  of  happens.  A  lot  of  words  leave  the  stable  at  once  and  then  it’s  too  late  to  corral  them  back.  You’re  already  halfway  through  the  sentence  and  thinking  ‘oh  no,  why  am  I  still  talking,’  and  then  you  realize  you’re  still  talking  while  thinking  that.” A  breath  of  laughter  escaped  him,  shoulders  easing  a  little  more.  “Point  being  thank  you.  For  trying.  I  mean  that.  And  I  promise  I’ll  try  not  to  live  up  to  the  reputation  of  being  a  confusing,  twig-stealing  shem  while  we  walk.”  He  lifted  one  brow,  teasing  but  tentative.  “Shall  we,  before  the  forest  decides  it  wants  to  make  an  example  of  me  anyway?”
