I think I have an essay floating around, but my personal hc is that they’d both caught some level of Feelings before they got involved physically, but neither of them really knew what to do with that long-term.

Vegeta was probably much more closed off in the future timeline, both living without a goal for the first time and not having the intervention of Trunks coming to give him any idea of a path forward, so I think Bulma had glimpses of the Vegeta that was possible, but never really got access to him.

If Bulma didn’t care about Vegeta, Trunks woulsn’t know anything about him. Bulma was realistic for what Trunks should expect, but still described him softly enough that Trunks was eager to meet him. If Bulma didn’t cMy personal take is that Bulma always felt that there was more in him, and a place in his heart reserved for her and their son, but had resigned to the idea that she’d never know for sure. She’s always been prone to romanticizing her crushes, and might’ve figured pretending she knew his heart would do hers more harm than good, so she just let their history be their history and tried to let it just be what she experienced.

So when Trunks came back and confirmed the instincts and observations she’d probably spent 20 years writing off as romanticizing those parts of him in his absence, I’m sure she was over the moon.

Do you think Vegeta had a gentle side to him during those three years only toward her?

Anons and Me and Moots have all say this many times, yeah. Bulma and Vegeta both don’t handle feeling disrespected with grace and patience, which is why I frequently rant about Toei’s/Funi’s handling of their dynamic, haha.

Yes, I don’t think he was squishy but I think in both universes he was smart and professional and they worked well together. She makes his armor and she knew how hard he was working and confident that he’d show up, so I think they built a mutual trust and respect. I think both were required before Vegeta would let her put hands on him, let alone indulge in ✨Rituals✨.

I’ve got a lot of essays around about how I think they probably made good partners before and after they were romantically or sexually inclined toward each other, and in the manga Vegeta isn’t laid back but he is pretty chill and amicable outside of battle. I think Bulma got more access to that side of him because she could meet him where he was at, intellectually, and vice versa(ish, not nearly to her degree of course but familiar and interested in what she and her father do and how well they do it), so she was most likely the first in the crew to see him calm and collaborative because they had to have worked together pretty often to design and test his armor, and probably worked with him and her dad to calibrate his gravity room.

Whatever their romantic status was, they had a lot of trust in and respect for each other from the beginning of this arc, so while I don’t think Vegeta was able to really access Soft(tm) until after he lost Trunks and couldn’t deny a vulnerable heart anymore, I think Bulma was among the first to get to really see up close that Vegeta was a whole person who has to be gentle as a force of habit outside of war. He is so powerful, and his anger could be so devastating, but he really doesn’t aim it at anyone as often or as brutally as he aims it at himself.
