Artwork for Bedrooms tells the story of eight artists living in San Francisco 2000–08, a period that until now has been framed by the Mission School,artists known for sprawling assemblages that took inspiration from graffiti culture. Artwork for Bedrooms draws a parallel narrative from the same moment of young artists who were similarly invested in “poor” materials,but who put them to work in more abstract, fragile, or conceptual ways.

Adrian Kiss’s large installations like Sylvania and Altar can be seen as architectural machines that immediately introduce a relationship with the viewer’s body. Their surfaces sprout neon lights, which, in addition to their power as graphic elements, enable the works to propagate through-out the space, contaminate it, and wrap the viewer in a halo of light. The pieces, too, can be understood as bodies, customized trunks that are extended with metal legs, or as oversized members that have been erected as futurist totems. These formalist installations certainly recall Hungarian modernism with its sharp-angled, extremely structured forms. Kiss does not deny these parallels but he does like to emphasize more modest references that are more in keeping with the applied arts, like fashion and graphic design. An Upper East Side scion of the famous de Menil family, Snow got his start as part of the graffiti crew IRAK in the 1990s. “He has never made his original art available on the internet, in retail stores, or in restaurants—partly for artistic reasons but also because doing so would diminish the value of his work,” the lawsuit continues. “Nothing is more antithetical to Mr. Snow’s outsider ‘street cred’ than association with corporate consumerism—of which McDonald’s and its marketing are the epitome.”

Detroit-based muralist Alvin “Al” Loving‘s geometric design appeared on a building on West 42nd Street just west of 6th Avenue. This block was a completely different beast than it is now, with movie theaters that degenerated into porn and one of those used-to-be-ubiquitous cafeterias where orange juice was served in cone-shaped cups. The building at left is the Hotel Knickerbocker, which used to have an entrance from the NYC subway.
