I feel like TikTok is useless for music promo. I’ve noticed that any post that “does well” seems to be due to the caption or having a clear image of the band, and when you dig into the stats, even the people who actually liked the post don’t watch hardly any of it… even if the video is only 15 seconds long. It feels like a huge waste of time.
On the other hand, TikTok has drew in some people who are genuinely engaged in the long-term. But usually they are based on locations where we are unlikely to tour, at least for the time being. It seems like not the most economical way to grow an audience.
I’ve also noticed with local bands, having a decent TikTok following doesn’t seem to necessarily translate into decent shows and tour opportunities. I think it’s because people are relating more to thier image or personality than the actual music which is the product. Or because some of the engagement is paid bots.
No matter what every marketer says, I still think for the arts, quality will win over quantity eventually. You can hype up a shit band and they will get noticed, but it won’t endure unless they actually put out decent stuff consistently.
I don’t expect a lot from marketing our music, because I think realistically it is not for everyone. It will always be fairly niche. I just don’t want to waste lots of time on something inefficient. I want to spend time on the art, not the promotion. 99% of stuff I post are videos people have taken at shows or stuff we have captured at practice or touring. There is literally no point in posting stuff that isn’t centred on the music imo.
