Learned something interesting from talking to a fellow lesbian that was old enough that she was out & involved in the LGB community back when the AIDS epidemic was going on in the US. The narrative (on radblr, and other places that care about gay and lesbian history) has been lately that lesbians took it upon themselves to care for sick and dying gay and bi men because no one else would, that they were selfless angels, etc. Which is partially true, lesbians likely did want to help gay men out of altruism and a sense of shared community. But the other reason was that hospitals would literally advertise for lesbians to come in and care for gay men, because they thought that lesbians were somehow inherently immune to the disease, observing that they were not contracting it (of course we soon knew this was because HIV was primarily being spread through sexual contact during that epidemic, and gay men were the primary vector, and of course lesbians were not having sex with men). So they were literally like, 'well lesbians seem to be immune, so let's send them in' lol. And some lesbians took them up on it. there was a lot of ignorance among medical professionals and also a lack of communication to the public even after doctors had a pretty good idea about what caused HIV transmission in those first two decades. So I wasn't entirely that shocked to hear about this, but it was an interesting piece of the story to learn about.

that doesn't really make sense though. wouldn't near all women be 'immune' then, since they wouldn't be having sex with the gay, hiv positive men?

We all know what erectile dysfunction is but literally no one is ever taught what vaginismus is and it can cause people to feel extremely lost, broken, and cause people to take their own lives. Raise. Awareness.

Thank you for sharing bc I think I might actually have this but I thought it was just me. I can barely handle so much as a tampon. Will have to bring this up at my next doctor’s appointment.
