         there’s a touch of anticipation.  layla will return to these papers later, but right now she’s refocused on their original mission: the journal. those pictures might be the last documented trace of this particular artifact. they might be the place to  start the search from  and that’s no small feat in the world of stolen antiquities. she pulls the box in question closer and begins sorting through its contents. stacks and stacks of papers, old photos in sepia stuck together by unknown substances... and right at the bottom, with an embroidered handkerchief and a broken pair of spectacles, is a little red leather book. she holds it up.   ❝ this little red leather book? ❞

         ❝ i have a unit. ❞   for a moment she looks back at the door and her gaze catches, stuck. it’s like she’s expecting marc to walk out and descend the steps towards them.  it’s never going to happen.  as far as she knows, he’s dead. the divorce papers sitting in a folder on her desk  ( in her new room, which layla is incredibly grateful to mercy for )  are proof enough he’s finished with their life. he was mercy’s friend too. she’s got to be grieving this.   ❝ we’ll do it tomorrow. it’s still... my flat for three more days. ❞

in what universe..... would i not choose you........... sophie!!!!!! you're so much fun to talk to and to plot & write with. i thoroughly adore your portrayal of river. i think she and layla have an amazing dynamic that i shall quite simply never be over. i also really admire you for your tenaciousness. i also am terrified to guess how many asks you currently have to answer

         ❝ we’ve had close before. ❞   it’s unclear if she’s trying to mitigate the severity of it, or if she’s genuinely not as bothered as she probably should be. layla feels fear; she simply doesn’t allow it to stop her.  maybe she should sometimes.  but she’s never been very good at resisting things that are bad for her, and that counts for life threatening situations as much as it does for marshmallows. she pours her focus into keeping control of the vehicle as she speeds them away. her heart is racing but it’ll start to beat a little slower now that they’re out of the line of fire. she purses her lips and exhales audibly, a release of tension to keep her head clear.   ❝ i don’t think we should go back to the hotel. ❞
