.I think the reason why squishes feel so embarrassing (in my experience) is because it almost feels wasteful, considering how often friendships are generally demeaned by people.

.Thinking about someone constantly, wanting to impress them and get on their good side, taking great consideration into what you should gift them, etc. — those are all recognized as romantic traits, more often than not. .In a lot of people’s eyes, there’s no way you could possibly want to build a life including someone (ex.) or devote yourself to making someone happy (ex.) if it wasn’t done with romantic intent.

.Because to those people, friendships aren’t important enough to spend that much time and effort in. .After all, for a lot of people, they view relationships as a hierarchy to climb up, with romantic relationships being at the top and being more important than anything else. .Personally, I’ve heard “friends will leave eventually, so don’t get too attached” more times than I can count growing up.

…To experience a platonic crush so intensely feels embarrassing because the end goal is (often times) only to be considered “friends” with somebody, and because “friends” as a title is thought of so little, generally, you wind up going… “That’s it?” ?It’s “just” friendship, so the efforts are ultimately useless, right? “Now what…?”

.Anyway, getting squishes on people can be intense. .I wish it was more socially accepted to talk about it without people: A. assuming you’re actually (romantically) crushing on them, or B. immediately dismissing your feelings as being dramatic or weird.

.Friendship doesn’t have to mean anything to people, but to those that it does, it’d be nice to have those feelings and the devotion that may come with it taken seriously.

Sometimes a character is feeling these feelings for the first time and an author wants to tell that. Reciprocation =/= good ending. If not, every character who experiences anger should be expected to kill someone or something by the end of it. If character A gets angry to their pet, for example, would a good ending means needing to kick the fuck out of them? Yeah, well, same shit applies to romance.

as an aro person, i think its sad how little its talked about being the person who is told by their best friend that they like you romantically. its a bit talked abt in straight spaces w “oh my guy friend js wants me for sex,” but i mean it more like this is your closest friend who means so much to you and now theyre telling you they feel this way for you, something you dont reciprocate, something you dont feel, and having the burden to tell this person you love so much that its not romantically in the cards.

being on the other side is so heartbreaking bc this person wants something from you that you cant give them, and it feels horrible to tell them that and watch your friendship crumble because they yearn for something you cant even imagine and you feel like its your fault for hurting them.
