stray bullets pierce my dreamfabric / the jaw / grate the skin / make fireworks of the blood / screams in their afterbirth / a god’s might to bring down a body / that has tilled the blood / of this nation / a nation that has opened its mouth / demanded the strongest of our first born / & second born / & third / a nation that still ruptures the sky with fireworks / on a day that still held the Blk body first prize at an auction block / a nation which picks & chooses amnesia / it’s the 9pm news / & the blk body / on cue / has caught a stray bullet / mid-plea / once / i had to reason with loving a man / who lives in a body / that killed me three lifetimes ago / a body that so strongly stood in its whiteness / it tried to grate the skin off my back to justify fucking me / you are one of the good ones so you can’t be blk / just a dark-skinned white girl / stood in the sun for far too long / had too much charcoal to eat / once I was foolish enough / to believe / my degrees made me / bulletproof / that I was a “good” Blk / the bullet: parade of funeral sails / does not recognize my ‘good’ / or whatever fabric / I cover my eyes with / to think I am safe / from the ground that knows my hands so well
