The same man he believes betrayed and got Lily killed, the bully who tormented him for years ends up helpless, injured and completely at his mercy. And what does Snape do? He levitates him onto a stretcher and brings him back to Hogwarts alive. Despite the hatred. Despite the memories. Despite believing Sirius is a murderer.

That’s Severus Snape. Complex, contradictory, and deeply human.

Where does the idea of selfish Severus Snape and his possessive love come from? Do people really believe that Snape died in the Shrieking Shack at 38, at the hands of Voldemort? Do they honestly think that, until he was 38, he lived a normal, happy life, full of hope and dreams, right up until that last minute when everything was suddenly ripped away from him?

Snape didn’t just die in that moment. His life ended 18 years earlier, when he was 20 years old, standing on a hill in front of Dumbledore. That’s when he gave up everything—his freedom, his future, and his life—in exchange for the safety of the Potter family: James, Lily, and Harry.

From that moment on, Snape no longer lived for himself. He had no control over his own fate; his life had been bargained away to protect others. Every step he took after that was part of a long, ongoing sacrifice.

People say they don’t like Snape because he didn’t make up for his mistakes the way he should have, that his redemption arc wasn’t complete. Excuse me? I’m not sure what more a person can give than their life. What’s more precious than their time and youth? What’s more important than their freedom? Snape sacrificed all of that—what else did he even have left to give?

He was barely out of his teenage years when he chose to give up everything—his youth, his dreams, his ambitions, even his loyalty—for people who didn’t care about him. Yet, Snape stayed on that path with unwavering courage for the next 18 years, never backing down.

Snape wasn't just a kid who experienced violence at school, with none of his teachers showing the slightest interest in the bullying he endured; he also didn't have any support at home. We're talking about someone who grew up surrounded by violence, whose emotional and affective role models were violent, and who never had a support network or a safe environment at home. Outside of home, during his school years—which he probably hoped would at least be a break from what he experienced at home—he also didn’t get a moment's rest. His entire childhood and adolescence were marked by the violence he received, and by the feeling of vulnerability he experienced from not having a SINGLE ADULT to back him up or protect him. His examples of functional adults weren’t functional. His role models for how to relate to people weren’t functional. Nothing around him during his emotional and cognitive developmental years was functional.

People still seem surprised that he joined the Death Eaters. Let's see: if the only people who aren’t violent towards him turn out to be a group of individuals deeply involved in a dark sect, what other options does he have? First of all, Severus probably didn’t fully realize just how despicable these people were, because honestly, all his role models throughout life had been so violent that his perception of good and evil was likely quite distorted. And then there’s the fact that he probably saw those people as the only ones who treated him like a human being, and his need for acceptance and protection led him to follow them to the bitter end. At the end of the day, he was just a kid/teenager looking for affection and acceptance.

He was actually at his best. He'd spent ten whole years in Hogwarts without the Marauders and before Harry Potter walked in.

Of course it wouldn't have been easy for him to adjust, but he did. And I just can't help but think of those first months where the other teachers got to know him, and got to realise that this boy needed them, needed their help, and took care of him. I can't help but think of how they promised him that it's okay, it's over, everyone's safe and he's not what he thinks he is. He's okay.

Like, for ten years he would have been happy. He had friends. He had a job. He had a home. Hogwarts was his home.

And then Harry Potter came and everything went wrong.

Can you imagine, him seeing Harry's face for the first time? After so many years of actually being content and happy, suddenly he sees James Potter's face, Lily Evans' eyes. Suddenly he's reminded of Voldemort who will return now, and now he's got a ticking clock, a countdown warning him that that's it, time's up, everything you've built in these ten years are soon going to break. And then come the events of the first and second year. Okay, so they're chaotic and stressful, but it's fine, they're all stressed, they're all in this together.

Then it's Harry's third year.

And that's when everything falls apart.

Remus Lupin, one of his abusers and a serious gaslight, is here in the job he wanted, and acting like everything's fine between them while simultaneously disrespecting him and forgetting to take the potion and being a huge risk to them all. Sirius Black, one of the two main abusers, is on the loose. And no one is ever gonna believe him about Lupin, are they? Suddenly it's Lupin's home. Lupin's safe space. But what about Snape? Do the past 13 years mean nothing? It seems so. And in the end, he has a complete breakdown because it's all coming down.

Then comes the goblet of fire. Okay, normal, right? But then there's moody. And there's the visiting schools. And then there's Kararoff who will not leave him alone! And then...

And then Harry Potter comes with the dead body of a teenage boy, crying and screaming that Voldemort's back.

And now Snape knows that time is up and things only get worse. Everything happens after that, from spying to dealing with that wretched Umbridge who's trying to destroy the school.

And then...

And then he has to kill Dumbledore.

And that when it all ends.

All he built in the past 16 years....

All the promises that they'd never leave him...

That they'd always look after him...

That they know he's not that person he used to be...

That everything will be okay because he has them to look after him...

They mean nothing now.

Personally I think severus would be less trigger by not having to see his bullie's face every day and it would probably make him more nostalgic. But thats all, I think he would still have to be a jerk towards her sometimes to keep his cover as a spy. But I would never think he would SA her wtf. Sorry I still in shock

We are never told that Snape loved Lily romantically or desired her sexually. Why if a man wants to protect a woman can't it be just because he loves her. Why people think always have to be romantic feelings or sexual desire involved?

Furthermore, they make look Snape as a potential pedophile, like wtf. We don't even know much about his sexuality, I would say that he is one of the most queer-coded characters and everyone ignores that. But at no time he show inappropriate sexual attitudes towards his students.

Why is it so hard to understand that Snape loved Lily and that doesn't mean he wanted to fuck her. If he had been that obsessed he would have looked for women who looked like lily and fuck them but that is something we never see. Because Snape didn't love her looks. He loved her she was kind to him and treated him like a human being.

People often ask: why Snape couldn’t let go? Why did he never forgive the Marauders, why did he stay hung up on Harry’s mistakes, why did he seem unable to move past anyone’s worst moments?

But Snape didn’t just hold grudges; he lived inside them. Forgiveness was something he never learned to give, not because he was cruel, but because he never learned to give it to himself and until he did, forgiving others was impossible.

(Most people see their mistakes as something to learn from, something that becomes a part of who they are. But Snape wasn’t like that. For him, a mistake was identity, his own and everyone else’s.)

At nineteen, he made a choice that filled him with shame so deep it became the foundation of his identity. Psychologists call it a “shame-based identity” when the mind stops separating who you are from what you did. Snape didn’t just carry guilt he built himself out of it. And once guilt becomes your structure you start seeing everyone else through the same lens. He judged others by their guilt, just as he was defined by his own.
