Leucocrinum montanum is in the family Asparagaceae. Commonly known as star lily, it is native to much of the western United States. This is the only recognized species in the genus Leucocrinum, and there has been debate regarding the taxonomic placement of the star lily. Recent molecular evidence has suggested that star lily is closely related to Yuccas and Agaves, thus placing it within the Agavoideae subfamily of Asparagaceae. Star lily is a stemless perennial species that dies back to its underground fleshy roots after flowering. The fruit of the plant actually develops underground, and it is believed that the seeds are dispersed by foraging ants.
