I WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS ASK I NEEDED MULTIPLE BUSINESS DAYS TO COLLECT MYSELF. Anyway wolves were my special interest from ages 11-14, and that combined with too much time spent on the old Wolfquest community forums meant I was absolutely militant about wolf realism in media. Turns out a lot of people do not know anything about wolves!!

1. Eye colours Wild adult wolves do not have blue eyes, or deep green/saturated green eyes. Wolf pups are born with blue eyes, but these will pale into yellow, amber or olive as they reach adulthood. An adult wolf with blue eyes will be the result of interbreeding with dogs. Green is also an uncommon eye colour - an adult wolf may have olive or gray-green eyes, but the vibrant saturated green you see in fursonas is not really a naturally-occurring thing. Wolves of the Beyond specifically really irked me for its portrayal of wolves having emerald green eyes

2. Hunting behaviours Wolves don't stalk their prey the same way lions and Warrior cats do. They are endurance predators, and their hunting strategy relies on chasing large prey down until they collapse from exhaustion. They might creep up to prey initially to get a closer start, but the big cat strategy of "stalk the thing and then bite it ASAP" is by and large not how wolves kill prey

3. Claws A weird number of shows and books (and roleplays from when I was like 15) have their wolves scratch each other and leave giant slash marks with their claws. Wolves aren't slashy guys!! Their claws can't retract and are actually fairly blunt. They're built for digging and manipulating dirt. A wolf's claws would probably still scratch you up if it jumped on you (the same way a domestic dog's would), but wolves do not use their claws as weapons the same way a lion might.

This is another thing that Wolves of the Beyond got really wrong lol. There's a scene where a group of travelling wolves form a giant wolf chain to rescue one of their number who's fallen down a cliff, and the author described them as gripping onto each other with their claws. I had to put the book down lmao

4. Sweating?? Wolves don't sweat, they pant! In "The Sight" by David Clement-Davies the protagonist wakes up with sweat clinging to her fur. This has never left my brain. Have you seen what a dog looks like guys

5. Pack hierarchy I'm not even going to go into this one it would take too long. The idea that wolves have a rigid pack hierarchy was proposed in very early studies that featured captive wolves. This has been disproven since then, with observations noting that the strict alpha-beta hierarchy is exclusive to captive animals. I don't really care about this in animal xenofiction because it's fun when the talking animals have a hierarchy (see Warriors). I do care about it in alpha male discourse and that one viral Facebook mom post that's like "the alpha wolf is the one at the back making sure his pack is safe <3"

6. Dens Wolves do not have "dens" or caves in the way media commonly portrays them. They're nomadic! A pack of wolves will spend their time travelling through their territory, typically in keeping in line with migrating prey populations. This also allows them to mark their territory and reinforce their borders as they move. The only time a wolf pack will centre itself on a den is while pups are being raised.

Here's the den from Alpha and Omega, a movie that had me in a chokehold when it came out becase There Were Wolves In It. Sorry Kate, you should all be sleeping in the cold

7. Attacks on humans Generally speaking, a solitary wolf is not going to attack a human unprovoked. The exception to this case would be if the wolf is desperately hungry, defending pups, or feels surprised/threatened by the human. Wolves are predators, and predator animals aim to find the easiest prey to kill - i.e. the most low-energy and least likely to maim them. Wolf attacks on humans do of course happen (especially in areas where human populations are encroaching on natural wolf habitat or have led to a prey scarcity), but I feel like they're waaay more common in fantasy media than they are in real life. 2. Latest movie? What did you think? I watched Project Hail Mary for the first time yesterday and turns out everyone on my dash is right. It is the best movie.

3. What are you looking forward to right now? My next day off work :D

4. If you could do anything at all today, what would it be? Fly to Melbourne and pour some water on @fellamorte like the pot plant.

5. drink of choice? iced vanilla latte

6. Hair routine? I should have one but I don't. I have very very very thick and frizzy hair (no frizzier than that. whatever you are thinking I need you to double it my hair is an entity of its own). there is so much hair on my head and I SHOULD have a routine for it but I don't. I wash it like twice a week and it's very forgiving of neglect.

7. Favourite way to travel? Is there another you want to try? I have a driving job (healthcare at home babey!!!) so over the last 6 months I've grown to really love driving. I feel like a cowboy but instead of a horse I have a beaten up Honda.

A deep dark secret of mine is that I cannot confidently ride a bike. I've had coordination issues since I was a kid and things that involve balancing (e.g. bike, skateboarding, ice skating) are really stupidly tricky for me. I'd love to learn to ride a bike to the point where I can confidently get from A to B. And then find a bikeable place to ride it in.

8. Favourite month and why? Shit dude I love them all. They're all good. July is my birthday mointh and Art Fight so that's always neat. I feel like April is pretty nice as well?? The weather starts getting cooler here but it's not yet freezing winter so it's a nice in between.

9. Favourite time of day and why? 5pm easy peasy is the best time of day. I'm home from work and the sun is setting and the world is calm and breathing. it's the optimal time for sunsets.

If I'm at work, the best time of day is 10am. I spend like 50% of my time on the road and I've found that 10am specifically is the magic hour where no one is on the road. Everyone has arrived at work, dropped their kids off for school and gone to their appointment. 10am best driving time.

10. Do you play or follow any sports? no

11. What kind of music has been stuck in your head lately? I LOVE THIS QUESTION!! I cycle through music at lightning speeds because of how much time I spend driving. Recently I've been having a Bastille renaissance. Go listen to Fake It guys

12. Dishes or laundry? DISHES!!! Laundry is an evil task to me. Sheets are my enemy and so is folding.

13. Something you learned recently? The best swallowing imaging options when trying to wean someone off a PEG tube. Btw it's a videofluoroscopy. no one guess my job

14. What would you talk about if you could give a TED talk on anything? WOLVES!!! The TED talk is me in a room listing every single common fact about wolves that popular media gets wrong. Someone ask me this please I could talk about this AT LENGTH

16. Piece of advice you would give yourself five years ago? let your cringe out!!! everyone is just as nerdy as you

17. Do you believe in luck and superstition? Do you carry any lucky items or follow any rituals? I feel like everyone does a little bit. Uhhh okay what are my superstitious beliefs. I always say good morning to birds because I think that they listen and remember. Same with trees, I fully believe you can make friends with a tree and it will remember you. I think a full moon is good luck because that's our buddy and she's here to see us, but apparently that's an unpopular opinion. I also have a very specific necklace + bracelet combo I wear whenever I fly on a plane.

18. Are you musical (play any instruments, sing)? Would you ever perform for an audience? In an eerie echo of the user who tagged me, I was a piano + flute double threat growing up. I also taught myself the ukulele during lockdown and every now and then I'll write a song for funsies. Unfortunately my singing voice is very very average so it's just for me and for fun :)

19. Write, type or speak? WRITE!! Handwriting helps me process information so all my university notes and essay plans are handwritten. When I'm working on longer/more "professional" projects (e.g. writing a fic or running D&D) I'll type because it's faster and kind of necessary, but I still default to handwriting when I'm stuck or need to plan something out.

20. What do you wish someone would ask you? This is specific to my blog only but I actually love when people ask me about my rarepair hksjhds. "Why do you ship Redcreak" "Why should I ship them" "Give me 5 headcanons about right now" I eat that up. it gives me strength. This extends to any opinion based ask ever I love when people swing into my inbox and hit me with a "what do you think of X ship/character". Everyone do this more!!

Tango is SUCH a myth to me too I need to study him more. also I was fully about to give you some normal non-hybrid headcanons because I forgot the context

I keep going for canids it's because I was the wolf kid at age 12 BUT!! I think Tango would be a fennec fox!! It's small and The Big Ears and I think that's really charming for him

I think that a red-factor Canary would also be a really cool hybrid headcanon for Tango!! Let's play into the fact that he was Jimmy's soulmate and the first player out in Past Life. Let's make every single player who's died first some iteration of a canary actually. Mumbo next

I'm so sorry I am so late to this one but I'M HERE!! Grian was the first Minecraft Youtuber I watched ever so he has such a special place in my heart. I'll admit I have been trapped in the avian Grian cage for ages so coming up with different hybrid headcanons for him was really fun!!

Ok so, this is a cop out because it's a bird, but my first Grian hybrid headcanon is a passenger pigeon. I've had pigeon Grian in my head ever since the post office bit he did in Hermitcraft. Specifically a passenger pigeon because they're extinct and I like that lore implication for Grian :D

another hybrid headcanon that I think is really cute for Grian is a jerboa!! I love the ridiculous ears and tail. they also have the same dizzying dark eyes. It's a tiny void creature that belongs in the desert!

I think serval Grian could also be really cute?? it with the ears?? idk why but I'm drawn to slightly unusual animals for him. I want him to be creature.
