ナチスの暗号機「エニグマ」とその前史のごく簡単な覚書

こないだ映画「イミテーション・ゲーム」を見てきたので、ちょっとナチスの用いた暗号機「エニグマ」の原理と、その誕生までの流れについて簡単に述べる。基本的にはサイモン・シンの「暗号解読」を底本に。

古代のカエサル暗号

知られている暗号で最も古いものはいわゆるカエサル暗号である。紀元前1世紀のローマの将軍ユリウス・カエサルが用いたもので、AをBに、BをCに、…、ZをAにという風にアルファベットを1文字ずつずらすだけだ。簡単なので小学校の時の友達との手紙のやりとりに使った人も多いのではないだろうか。

ALEA IACTA EST (賽は投げられた) → BMFB JBDUB FTU

ET TU BRUTE (ブルータス、お前もか) → FU UV CSVUF

この暗号の難点は「仕組みを知っていれば簡単に破れる」という事である。ではどうするか。まあ手っ取り早いのは、暗号化した文をさらにもう1回暗号化する事だ。アルファベットを2個ずらすと言ってもいい。

ET TU BRUTE → BMFB JBDUB FTU → GV VW DTWVG

2個でもダメなら3個、4個… と行く訳だが、26回ずらしたら元に戻ってしまう。つまり、可能なパターンは25個しか無い。暗号解読者は奪った密書が「何個ずらしたカエサル暗号か」が分からなくても、全パターンを試せばいい。1時間もかからないだろう。
