I dragged an old grad-school powerbook out of the garage thinking it would be packed with forgotten files and photos and old social media stuff and things I hadn't thought about in ages but when I got it started I realized it looks almost exactly like my current computer situation and that cloud computing has ruined the time capsule and that in three years your life can look exactly the same in your OS (third-sixth year of grad school) but it can completely flip upside down IRL, moving your friends all over the place, sending you to Oregon, taking loved ones and bringing you new ones, giving you precarious solvency and taking it away with absurd levels of debt, and filling your life with young (young!) students and former (former!) students who call you professor, one per each new gray hair in your beard.
