"Kaoru-san…."
How had it ended up like this? Clive wondered as he stared down at the section of road that had swallowed up Kaoru Hayashi mere moments ago. Today had been one disaster after another it seemed.
Earlier that day, everyone had received two secrets as MonoMANU’s latest motive, one of their own and one of their classmates. And while Clive’s was not something he’d kill for, it was very upsetting to see put in text, and he’d felt miserable since the motive announcement. The other secret he’d recieved had hardly been on his mind at all, except when Purin had texted him to ask about their secret. He’d agreed to meet up with them, but had time to kill and had spent most of it moping. Until he’d run into Kaoru.
He didn’t know the gamemaster very well, but she seemed like a kind person, and when she’d offered to try and cheer him up, he really couldn’t refuse. Tossing a very bouncy looking ball of elastics seemed like it could be fun…But it’d all gone wrong.
The ball had slipped from Kaoru’s hand, and Clive had failed to catch it and the ball had crashed into a display case, breaking the contents.
And that’s how it’d all gone to hell. MonoMANU had shown up, and called all the students to the shop and Kaoru had been killed with a trap door. Somehow he’d escaped with his own life but…He shouldn’t have. It was his fault Kaoru was dead. He’d Jinxed her, somehow. Usually his luck wouldn’t allow him to escape from that unharmed, so he must have stolen hers. He’d jinxed her and now she was dead.
"Why…Why not me too…" He mutters, still staring down at the ground. He doesn’t even notice the person coming to talk to him.
Well. Yukiko could honestly say she wasn’t expecting that. Somehow when she got the announcement she had half-expected the machine to present another dead body, even though it would have broken the established order, so she was annoyed to discover this wasn’t the case. The secrets would end up holding all the power over them that it wanted until it was good and ready. No, the dispute was over some stupid accusation of vandalism. Although it was hard to take the stuttering little girl’s side when the damage was clearly done.
Not that the punishment fit the crime. When Kaoru disappeared into the trapdoor with a shriek, Yukiko couldn’t help but wince even though her disappearance was conspicuously lacking in blood and gore. Of course, that didn’t prove the girl was dead, so she wasn’t passing judgment one way or the other…but the fact of the matter was, she’d broken a rule and now she was no longer there, and now they were just a bunch of idiots standing in a jewelry store, being forced to acknowledge the power the robot had over them. As though they could ever forget it.
Unwilling to just pad back out and fulfill her simple role as innocent bystander, her gaze fell on Clive again, all voluminous orange hair that seemed blinding in the close quarters of the dim and tasteful jewelry shop. The boy looked like he was about three seconds from losing his lunch all over the floor, and then what would be the result of that, another vandalism charge? Not that it really mattered to her whether he survived in the long run—but more people alive now meant more people to target other than her in future motives. She approached him and roughly grabbed his wrist, hopefully making it clear this was not negotiable.
"You weren’t punished because you didn’t do anything. Anyone could tell you that. …It said to clear out. So unless you want to go the same way as her you might as well."
Clive jumps when he feels a hand grab him roughly by the wrist and turns to look down at Yukiko with surprise. Of all the people in the world who might have come to talk to him, he had not expected the Surgeon, who he had not made the greatest Impression on. All sorts of surprises today it seemed.
"Ah...I suppose. that would be the truth. I have not done anything that could be counted as explicitly wrong, or against the rules. But I am not entirely without blame as I have. W-well I was a part of this, and a part of the reason why Kaoru-san has fallen to her death." He speaks quietly, almost too quiet to hear, disagreeing with Yukiko's words, but following them anyways as he starts to walk out of the jewelry shop, not pulling away from the surgeons grasp.
"Thank you...I...I might have stood there for far too long if you had not come to speak Tsuji-san. I do not know what would have happened to me if that was the case."
