Ukulele ☮ Uprising

@JakeShimabukuro - PBS Hawaii will broadcast the world television premiere of Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings on Tuesday March 12 at 8:00 pm, two months ahead of its national release. The one-hour documentary is part of a live pledge broadcast hosted by PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox.  Produced by the Center for Asian American Media and Pacific Islanders in Communications, the film follows the performer on tour from Los Angeles to New York and Japan. Back home in Hawaii, the documentary traces the beginning of Jake's career from the time his mother gave him lessons at the age of four. "I was just mesmerized by the sound of the instrument," he says. "Every time I played the ukulele or heard it, I felt so at peace. It just brought me home." The film covers the period when he performed as part of the group Pure Heart, the transition to solo performer and his evolving approach to playing the instrument. "It wasn't just about trying to play as fast as I could any more, but it was about letting the instrument breathe. That was when I really started to learn how to utilize space in my music."  Hawaii’s only public television station, PBS Hawaii, advances learning and discovery through storytelling that profoundly touches people's lives. Brittni and her ukulele are a brilliant match: Both are humble in nature, small in size, and very powerful with proper delivery. Brittni and the `ukulele in general have gained notoriety, no longer confined by stereotypes about the instrument. There’s a global resurgence in the instrument’s popularity and she is part of the trend. Releasing her 5th CD with the legendary Grammy winner Tom Scott, who personally requested to play with her at a concert last year, thinks Paiva is the real deal, because of her ability to play all kinds of music without losing her identity. “She plays it like a guitar, giving her a wide range of possibilities. She adopts tunes to this instrument, and makes them sound full and rich. She’s doing a great job and has a great future…She’s got a really unique voice in music,” he raved.
