A solemn package arrives at Vlad King’s doorstep.

On the outside, it’s incredibly plain. Nothing about its appearance betrays its contents. It’s all simply and dutifully addressed to the hero by his alias, signed in a quick and delicate scrawl, almost hastily done. There are stamps detailing how much of a rush order it is all over it, which look rather sad in hindsight as its clearly arrived past its due date.

Inside, the box seems nearly crammed with an assortment of gifts. Red and black silk ties, a leather belt with a complicated design on the buckle that glimmered with red gems and a matching silver watch that both seemed almost custom made. There’s a small coffee maker with a golden set of whiskey stones tucked into it. A black velvety throw blanket is tucked around all of the gifts, keeping them all bundled together safely. On top of it all, a few simple notebooks, ranging in different designs and styles. 

Attached to the first in the pile is a letter in the same scrawl:

Vlad King, it reads.

I hope this finds you in good health.

Enclosed are a few gifts from my son. He’s always had this habit of spending his allowance trying to get you the perfect thing. He really loved you. Hopefully some of these have come close.

There are more. His room is a tad cluttered with these things. I’m still holding onto the hope that he’ll be able to give you the rest of them in person.

If not, there’s always the holidays.

He's tired, he thinks as he leans his forehead against the door. He's tired, and a poor excuse for a hero and a teacher, and he doesn't need any more surprises from the Mystery villain, his known stalker.

But he knows, deep down, that the box won't leave by itself. So, taking a deep breath, he reminds himself of his duty.

He opens the door and collects the box.

Vlad doesn't set it down on his table. If its contents are...leaking, he prefers it to stain the floor. So he puts it down on the floor, and immediately shoos away his dog, bounding over with curiosity.

He kneels before the box and grimaces. Time to face it.

The lid comes off. A letter.

As he removes the letter and gingerly opens it, it hits him this isn't a case of the Mystery villain at all. On the contrary. This letter smells like fancy perfume.

He reads the words carefully.

.

Guilt plummets inside his stomach like a bowling ball. He drops the letter, midway through its contents, and moves his hands inside the package, uncovering all of its delights.

His hand trembles.

Elizaveta lowers her head between her front paws, her big, droopy eyes looking up at her best friend and owner.

She huffs a breath, and whimpers. She doesn't understand why is there water leaking from his eyes, and why does he smell so miserable.
