This is the book they wrote.
Sweden has decided that its Model of legalising the sale of sex services but criminalising the buyer side of the sex industry applies to online content.
So if you commission a video or photo set from an online sex worker, or patronise a live video chat... You can go to prison for up to a year.
Under the new law, it will be illegal to offer compensation to another person to perform a sexual act remotely online.
When sex workers say they want decriminalisation and not legalisation, this is why... Decriminalisation means that laws pertaining to sex work are struck from the legal code, legalisation creates new laws to govern the industry which can be just as violent as full criminalisation with a progressive veneer, which is how you get know nothing's bleating "the Nordic Model" in a conversation that they have never been a stakeholder in.
The Nordic Model sucks, and I hope that this law is repealed quickly, I hope Sweden has full decriminalisation of sex work soon.
Actually I'm not done... The Nordic Model is nasty, it's saying "you're free" out one side of their mouth and ordering you shackled out the other.
No longer threatening to arrest you for carrying out your business doesn't mean much, while restricting where you can work, routinely arresting and incarcerating your clients, allowing landlords to evict you for being a sex worker, allowing banks to refuse your business...
This isn't a model that promotes mobility between professions, the ability to save for other plans whatever they be, investment with your income, stable housing, stable business as a sex worker.
And then there's the idea that clients, who are assumed to be men, are evil for wanting sex... One of those things that is a basic need to most adults, and assumes that wanting to engage in good faith with a business person who will provide that service is abusive and not a very normal business transaction between adults.
@krivi on your question about human trafficking and the sex industry, in particular between regions of socioeconomic disparity... The answer requires two parts.
1) in a society that has fully decriminalised sex work human trafficking would remain a crime.
2) the issue for individuals who have been trafficked across borders is generally not the trafficking as this is usually a service they initiated hoping to advance their prospects.
The problem arises if the traffickers confiscate passports and other identity documents and make demands of the once clients and now hostages.
These people may be pressed into manual labour, domestic labour, and sexual labour (sex trafficking) etc... in decriminalising sex work, and not criminalising people for undocumented migration, you make it possible for people to report their situations of indenture without fear of deportation or prosecution.
It's also important to remember that a person who engages human traffickers to transport them across borders does so because there are barriers to safer modes of entry. Also a person who enters the sex industry by way of border crossing with human traffickers may have intended to support themself with sex work all along, and instead finding the tragedy that is indenture by those bad actors denying the would be sex worker the benefits of their sexual labour and their freedom.
These situations are complicated, but increasing the freedom of the individual to have no fear that they will have legal consequences for attempting escape is always the right move. Increasing penalties for sex workers and clients, and for migrants, only increases the fear that the consequences for speaking out will be greater than staying with the the criminals who have all but enslaved you.
Thanks for answering. I've general knowledge on the argument for and against sex work, but this is the first time I've seen someone be for sex work, but against regulation. To add context: Sex work has been legal in the Netherlands for decades. The 2 major problems that the governments past and present are trying to tackle are human trafficking and loverboys. The problems of human trafficking here can be a little different. People from any country in the EU can freely travel and do sex work in the Netherlands without a visa. (So no risk of jail/deportation) Human traffickers coerce them by adding exorbitant housing and/or travel fees in the fine print. They threaten legal action if the victim refuses to pay. A lot of people from Eastern Europe are tricked into forced/indentured labour this way.
Loverboys are a whole other can of worms. They're charismatic adults that groom teenagers into a romantic relationship. Then wait until they're 18 to coerce them into the industry by faking a financial emergency or demanding it as a prerequisite to build their life together. The teens in question are often legal citizens and come from all walks of life, not just people that have troubles at home/school.
All of this is completely legal in both cases. The problem is big enough that there are specialized exit programs for these people, but it often takes years for the victim to decide to leave or even reach out.
In order to address this the recently fallen government passed a law last year that upped the minimum age to 21. The reasoning behind it is that people that age have matured more and are less likely to be manipulated. From what I could find sex workers don't approve of this law.
What you're describing are crimes even outside of sex work. Crimes which it doesn't look like the Netherlands has a substantially different occurrence of.
Grooming and romantic/sexual relationships between an adult and a minor is a crime.
Indenture is a crime, extortion is a crime...
These things would remain true with full decriminalisation of sex work.
Another question is, how much will this new licence sex workers will be required to carry cost? If the answer isn't application only and 0€, then it's a barrier to attainment and poor sex workers who can't afford to pay the application will be unfairly represented in prosecution.
I'm pleased to see the government assistance for people wanting to leave sex work, though I think putting "changing their income expectations" is a hilariously out of touch thing to include second on a government list of barriers to leaving sex work.
On the point of sex workers not approving of the law, I'd imagine not... I don't know how I would have made it between the ages of 18-21 if I didn't work in the industry. It gave me the income and time to enjoy life (which was a big deal for me) and study, and I did other work when I was ready.
Removing sex work from the criminal code (decriminalisation) doesn't stop you from introducing things like industry regulation that a person should be 21 before engaging in work that is statistically a point of exploitation. Though if you're wanting to combat indenture and extortion you probably won't find the same support for raising the barriers of entry for cleaning services, labour hire, agriculture etc.
All those things are illegal, yes. They avoid outright breaking the law by technicality.
It's not required for the employer to provide housing. We're in the middle of a housing crisis, so charging outrageous prices for mediocre housing is unavoidable. If the employer doubles as the employee's landlord, it must be on a separate contract, but they are allowed to take up to a quarter of the minimum wage as utility expenses. The Netherlands doesn't have universal health; but we can get penalized if we don't have health insurance. Foreign workers usually get their health insurance through their employer, so another part of their wages are also withheld for that reason. Who pays for the travel to the country and how is a lot more murky and depends on the job. The initial trip to the country and final trip back home are paid. The others can be taken out of wages. Commuting expenses are covered by the employer through a contract with an industry specific union. For some it's enough, for others it isn't. Sex workers don't have a union with enough power to negotiate for the entire industry so they don't have this contract.
(Licensing for sex work is region specific with bureaucratic caveats, but it's free unless you want own an establishment or go independent.)
This leaves migrant workers in general with very little money after bills, especially if they send some to their home countries. They often split their housing with more people than they're legally allowed, just to make ends meet. Hence it doesn't take much for an employer or third party to nudge them to sex work if that wasn't their first choice. In my previous reblog I made it sound like the industry was uniquely predatory; these industries are all in bed with each other. But the driving forces behind this are systemic to migrant labour in general.
An adult can't have sex with a minor, but the line between a platonic relationship and a romantic one without sexual elements can be really thin if you want to lawfully prosecute them. Hence there's a loophole for the Loverboy to exploit. Loverboys only sometimes get arrested. They're usually part of some sort of organised crime syndicate, which means they get caught on unrelated crimes. A lot will also talk about doing sex work before the victim is 18, which counts as soliciting. The same if they engage in blackmail or threats to coerce the victim. The cases where they just lie about needing to pay off some huge debt or something are a lot harder to deal with however.
A lot of poor sex workers do work independently, in my country most sex workers are sole traders...
Again, these terrible people aren't unique to the Netherlands, and what you have is an economic situation which threatens to trap people (regardless of industry) in their work and a company town system which makes taking advantage of that too easy. So it seems that first and foremost you have a systemic economic problem.
I think most people knew classmates who at 15 were dating 19-20 years olds, I knew several. These skeevy folk who prey on the nievite of young people are everywhere unfortunately, and unfortunately they do often get away with it.
Also the sale of sex services prior to the age of legal adulthood and the purchase of such services is by definition Sex Trafficking, there is no such thing as an underage sex worker. This said, being groomed to take on such a role is not the only way minors find themselves in situations of Sex Trafficking, it can be a failure of the availability/advertisement of youth homelessness initiatives, government financial support and domestic violence support.
I was kicked out of home shortly after turning 17. I was able to stay with friends for a while, but it wasn't long before I had no money, nowhere to go, and I couldn't even get government youth allowance because my father had attached me to a family trust and as far as the government was concerned the trust gave me too much money (I had never received any) to be eligible for payments. I didn't know what else to do so I went on Craigslist personals, I said I was 18, stayed in hotel rooms, was disappointed to learn that the Hilton is kinda shit, and ate fast food...
There are a lot of solutions to these issues, but most of these solutions are more services not more regulation.
More community and youth services, with more available information about what to do and who to talk to if you're in trouble is a great start.
The Y-Axis isn't that bad. Plus they have precise figures for every 2 years on the graph itself. This isn't a misleading graph.
The improvement is actually greater than this graph shows, since while house fires more than halved, the US population increased by 51% from 220 million to 332 million.
The number of house fires per 1000 people per year went from 3.289 to 1.023, a 69% reduction.
nice.
nice
Peer review, this was also my experience
Honestly, lemme tell ya, being on fire isn't an easy thing to do or sustain.
I also cannot overstate how much better electrical systems are these days. The house I grew up in didn't have circuit breakers. Most of our wall outlets were for two-prong, not three-prong, until my dad replaced them. "Eh, I'll take a look...this ain't bad, just need the needlenose and some alligator clips" was a sentence I heard more than one Boomer-age parent say when what they should have been saying was "I'll call the electrician." There were a lot fewer wall outlets, so they tended to get overloaded easily.
Better electrical practices are also a huge part of this.

My favorite joke in Metalocalypse is how as the show goes on it becomes increasingly obvious they’re naming characters with the sole purpose of torturing Mark Hamill.
It’s been almost two years since I posted this but here’s a list of the official spelling of every character he introduces here:
Dr. Gibbitz
Dr. Amon Skagerakk Fredrickshaven
Dr. Donald Gorthian
Ronald Von Momnaldberg
Dr. Natasha Nesciantskidovich
Vicenzo de Alimamala Corningston III
Professor Jerry Gustav Mangledink
Horace Marmingblat Wimplestein, Jr.
Dr. Chazz Fazzledopenhoffer
Vater Oorlag
Dr. Milminaman-lanilim-swinwamly
Dr. Gibbitz again (but for some reason it’s spelled “Gibbetz” in the season 2 subtitles)
Melmord Fjordslorn
Dr. Ralphus Galkinsmelter
Dr. Amomolith Chesterfield
Wilmore Unduntingiminen
Dr. Ninmiltrid Fmiltindryden
Dr. Imptnin Pmiltson
Dr. Tormindbind Mickmildididindnin
Dr. Krumpworth Chponglasia IV, Jr.
Dr. Borgermu Barret Swingdworth
Dr. Richard Reinhold Rnawighiwowpj
Captain Slufgyflaysid
Dr. Bartholomew Grahsrihajul
Dr. Alsajahb Fifborgiltk
Dr. Fsmilejera Irlelwoll
Dr. Commander Vernmim Chuntspinkton
Like I just love how you can pinpoint “Ninmiltrid Fmiltindryden” as the exact moment the joke went from making Mark Hamill say funny but still vaguely name-shaped words to forcing that poor man to pronounce straight up keysmashes out loud.
writing tip: put words on page. hope this helps. i will not be taking questions because i have not done this

i don't care if it's nazis, mormons, or a bunch of misguided autistic people. if anyone ever tries to tell you your soul is from another planet and you're actually part of the class of impressive people that secretly did everything cool in the world but is now extinct and lives on through your broken genome, you RUN. YOU WILL RUN AWAY. YOU WILL SPRINT FULL SPEED AWAY FROM THAT.
grabs you by the shoulders listen. listen to my words. i understand the urge to make fanfiction about yourself and to find a reality in which you're super awesome and great and everyone who hates you is wrong and dumb. i get it. you're better than that. you can love yourself without putting other people down, dehumanizing and generalizing, and retaliating against your oppressors.
there's no NPCs. there's no aliens coming to save us. we're not the next step in human evolution. our hyperconnected nervous systems give us terrible sensory overwhelm more often than they make us geniuses. neurotypical people are sentient, conscious, aware people who are capable of understanding you. we're more the same than we are different. we're more the same than we are different. we're more the same than we are different.
happy glorious 25th of may
it’s been years since i’ve first seen this comic and i still think it has one of the best punchline delivers of anything i’ve ever seen
You think you know what a person in psychosis looks like, but you probably don't. It's not confined to someone walking down the street screaming at hallucinations or ranting to everyone about the FBI implants. And it's not an axe murderer. It can be someone quietly sitting alone. It can be someone having an anxiety attack. It can be someone who's disoriented and dissociated. It can look like anything.
I've had psychotic episodes where I simply come across as depressed and a little confused. I've had them where I'm anxious and rocking and crying but I'm not loudly proclaiming my delusion.
I've had psychotic episodes where I thought my family was being stalked and I had to harm myself to appease the beings stalking us but nobody knew. My injuries were hidden and I simply stayed inside the house.
I've had voices make me feel terrible so I just cry and talk about what an awful person I am but that just looks like low self-esteem.
It can be right under your nose.
Stop acting like you know exactly what psychosis looks like - especially if you assume people who have it are violent and out of control. If someone tells you they have psychosis or schizophrenia, don't treat them like a ticking time-bombs waiting to kill someone.

normal country latest
You CANNOT hide these in the tags @injuries-in-dust
its probably a normal sign for the economy that all of my adulthood fantasies are like "imagine having your own kitchen living room and bathroom to decorate" "what if i could get on a train" "maybe one day i could purchase a sturdy pair of shoes" "i should save and invest in a single bicycle"
