Honestly, it depends on what you mean by matters. Is the role of captain important? Yes. Does it (or the As) always go to the quote unquote best player(s) on the team? No.
I think the questions I'm really asking are: Is it a huge career accomplishment to be captain? And does going from having a letter to not having one hold all that much significance? I've seen some people who seem pretty knowledgeable say it's no big deal and others who act like it's a fate worse than death. I think it's also hard because I'm really looking for an objective answer to a specific scenario and that's one of the reasons I wanted it to break Heated rivalry fandom containment
Yes being awarded captaincy is a huge career accomplishment. It is often given to the player that shows exceptional leadership qualities within the locker room, and it’s (sometimes) given to the best player on the team but this does not always have to be the case. It is also important because they are the only player on the ice that is allowed to discuss penalties or rules with the referee directly.
As for going from having a letter to not having one, it really depends on the circumstances. For example, if a player was stripped of their C and remained on the same team, yes I think there would have to be extreme circumstances for that to happen and it would be bad for their reputation. If a player was traded or left a team for another, it is less serious, but it also depends on why are they’re departing from that team. As for gaining a letter back, they would most likely not earn a letter for at least a year or more, as they would have to earn the leadership with the new team.
It definitely holds a lot of significance, especially because that player will be one of the faces of the franchise, but there are also players with natural leadership skills in the locker room that do not have a letter (if they’ve previously had one or not) just due to the seniority of other players. This often happens if a player was traded or signed with a team later in their career.
