dru blackthorn is kind of the most iconic character of all time bc she literally grew up in a society where being goth is required by law and she's still out-gothing everyone around her effortlessly. that's being legendary that's iconicism

people don't hate on johnny rook enough, actually.
and they also ignore kit's trauma.
i can't put into words how much it irritates me to see people on this app talking about johnny rook. they talk about him like he was just some "criminal with bad parenting skills" when in reality he was straight up abusive torwards kit and i am TIRED of pretending he wasn't.
johnny is an abusive father and the way he treated kit traumatized him to the point kit clearly showcases signs of ptsd. people love to say that he protected him and cared about him but that doesn't change anything about the consequences of his parenting skills. calling them merely "questionable" and not what they actually were (abusive) is disgenuine and completely glamourizes kit's trauma.
i hope i don't need to make a complete deep analysis of their relationship, but its very clear that even if johnny wanted to "protect" kit, this didn't make kit feel any less hurt by his actions. it is a complicated relationship, but johnny was clearly avoidant of his son — kit had to TAUGHT HIMSELF STUFF whe he was completely hidden from the world and not allowed to leave the house or the basement. i don't care if he had good intentions, his son was a CHILD who grew up never feeling his father's love and who was (at 15 years old) certain that his father did not love him. this trauma that kit has is at the core of his own avoidant tendencies, it is the core reason why he feels the need to flee to england after QoAaD: the events triggered his fight of flight tendencies and he pushed himself away from ty.
kit's avoidant tendencies and self deprecating humor aren't a "herondale trait" that cassandra clare is trying to "push onto us" to make him look like a mini jace. nor are they a "sign of him being dramatic". they are a genuine trauma response that is often ignored and not treated seriously.
this leads me to my next point: people being mad that kit uses the herondale name AND choses to treat tessa and jem like they are his parents, saying that it disrespects johnny's memory because he is his "real father" who raised him for 15 years.
kit used the herondale name because its a shadowhunter name and he chooses to be a shadowhunter. it's as simple as that honestly.
and as for kit seeing jessa as parents being disrespectful torwards johnny rook... well let me say that in my head an abusive father deserves to be erased. he made his son feel unloved and unworthy, if kit wants to treat the people who have been treating him with genuine love and care as parents that feels more than okay to me. jem and tessa are treating him like their own son and kit deserves to feel genuine love from parental figures. bloodline can be damned! if jessa are taking care of him like a son, if he feels like their son HE IS THEIR SON.
at the end of the day, johnny rook is to me as much as a father to kit as nathaniel was an older brother to tessa. and people who experience familial abuse have all the rights to cut ties with their biological family members and seek familial bonds with those who show them real love and care. because families are not dictated by blood and abuse victims shouldn't stay tied to their abusers.
Kit doesn't believe Johnny loves him because HE DIDN'T he loved Rosemary and Kit was the last piece of her and he hid kit and was abusive to him because he was hoarding a dead woman instead of raising a child
You can clearly see it in the way he acts and how he thinks that he doesn't see any value in himself if he isn't being "helpful" and you can see his comparisons of the Blackthorn family dynamics to his and it's completely obvious to me that Johnny failed as a father. His lifestyle puts Kit in constant danger and sure you can argue that he was hiding in the shadow market, but he didn't need to make everyone hate him to the point of the second he died Barnabas literally tried to murder Kit.
And to address the Kit treating Jem and Tessa as his parents
He is fully within his rights to do so even if Johnny has been a good father to kit the truth is that Kit was ADOPTED by the Carstairs and they are his kid to say that it disrespects Johnny is not only stupid but it's ridiculous how can you expect a CHILD to not treat the people who are treating him like a son like what they are HIS PARENTS
And because Kit was mistreated and abused he is fully entitled to choose new parents and he is allowed to change his name because it wasn't even his name it's said that Kit and Johnny had several different names so he probably had no connection to the name Rook where as Herondale he actually has connections to and he chooses to be a shadowhunter and chose the name Herondale, I'm sure he could have chosen any other, but you see the thing is that these are all his choices
At the end of the day Kit was a child and Johnny was an adult.
EXACTLY. I despise Johnny Rook and never understood his defenders. And to add onto this wonderful rant, Johnny Rook was most likely indirectly physically harming Kit’s health. It’s said through others eyes that when Kit first came to the Institute that he was a skinny pale kid ‘who hadn’t looked like he went out of the house much’. This seems a bit insignificant at first, like a throwaway comment, but it actually hints to a lot of things. I’m putting these in lists because I just prefer it.
1. Low vitamin D. It’s obvious that Kit must’ve had some kind of vitamin d deficiency, from rarely going outside and if he did go outside, it was to go to the Shadow Market, which isn’t much. Vitamin D is very harmful and can cause things like fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, and mood changes like depression, as well as anxiety. And we see quite a few of these symptoms reflected in Kit, especially in LoS.
2. I just want to catch onto the skinny part. Now, there are characters like Ty that are naturally just thin, however, these characters often have some sort of muscle and we see through others eyes that they are well fed and such. (Though to note with Ty, after Livvy’s died, he lost some weight and grew paler, which is a strange reflection of how Kit was at first). When you think about Kit’s lifestyle, often being left at home or in the basement for hours at a time, conpletely alone, it’s reasonable to assume Kit was underfed. He has little to no muscles at the start, and while he was able to swing up a chair when his house was attacked, it was also likely due to partly his Shadowhunter and Faerie blood giving him a boost, and his own adrenaline. All the facts seem to point to Kit not having a consistent source of nutrition due to Johnny Rooks neglecting behaviour
3. Low Iron. I don’t have as much to say on this, but I do think Kit had low iron. When you have low iron (and this is coming from someone who had severely low iron at some point), you tend to develop things like headaches, struggling with concentration, shortness of breath and pale skin. I do believe Kit reflects at least some of these symptoms. Now, low Iron can come from things like blood loss or stomach issues, but the main reason is not having enough iron in the food you eat, and again feeding (haha pun intended) into the likely prospect that Kit was being underfed when staying with Johnny Rook.
Some other things I just want to add:
1. Kit rarely, if ever, was allowed to buy new things if he didn’t steal it. We see that when he’s given money by Johnny Rook, and Kit wishes that he could by new clothes for himself. In the start of LM, Kit’s jeans had holes in them, so he was obviously forced to rely on shady methods when he wanted something, which is why Kit never seems to verbalise what he wants, and feels odd when someone gives him something
2. Johnny Rook obviously gave Kit trust issues, and now Kit seems to see everything cynically. When Magnus’s conjured up food for everyone in London, Kit, before even reaching for the food, had ‘seen through’ the con that Magnus was playing (giving them something they wanted for what seemingly looks for free while trying to gain information), while this may have subconsciously been Magnus’s intention, we know that in his heart Magnus is soemone who gives and generally doesn’t like seeing people miserable. But because of how Johnny Rook raised Kit, Kit now fees he cannot look at an act of kindness without believing there are selfish intentions behind it. This is why he turns on Ty so fast after the necromancy attempt.
3. I know this is small, but I cannot let go of jow Kit was just left in the Silent City alone after the battle for days with nothing but his own thoughts, which were probably quite terrifying at the time. This is a terrible parallel to how Kit was often made to sit alone in the basement, sometimes without explanation.
Johnny Rook severely neglected and abused Kit, and the fandom needs to start recognising that. This is something I’ve made multiple posts about, so I’m happy people are finally doing it too.
i have been thinking about this for 24 hours since i first saw it... the hands on ty's waist... the daggers... SOMEBODY SEDATE MEEEE
I haven't seen ANYONE address the fingerless gloves. Pls let's talk about the fingerless gloves.
fingerless gloves right next to 3 daggers this guy gaf about his own fingers as long as he gets that cookie

i truly agree with his! like you said, johnny was an adult and kit was a child!!! its important that we acknowledge this and that we see kit as the victim he is, because he is still healing and we should NOT consider him "dramatic" or "disrespectful" for exhibiting clear trauma-realted reactions!
