FIREFLIES — in the cards for @twosunnies!
the horizon over bandisbul beach has darkened, seasalt spray dancing along the remaining sparks of the bonfire that's slowly dying down. later hours of the night have chased almost everyone back to their tents, leaving her and yunseong left by the beach. he's laughing about something, his side of the blanket they're sharing slipping off as he talks, leaning in like he's trying to catch it back. danyi grins at him and tugs the blanket to her instead, beckoning him closer if he doesn't want to be left out in the cold. takes a sip of her whiskey and it burns as it goes down her throat, the few ice cubes melting fast in her cup. it's not the best quality stuff, settles uneasy in her chest, but it's good enough to use as an excuse.
she knocks her knees against yunseong, bare skin bumping up against warmth, and doesn't move away even after she's caught his attention. "hey, dummy," danyi calls. she's got him the way she likes him, a little sunburnt and his hair damp with waves caught on a surfboard. and that's why the surfer has her feeling fuzzy, giggly like she's not herself. thank god no one else is here to see her like this. danyi leans in, bumps her nose against his cheek. "i want a s'more," she says, eyes trailing the corner of his lips. steals something sweet off him, the tint of her lips leaving the faintest imprint over his. "ugh," marshmallow soft feelings are gross, she pushes his face away—then tugs him back, the smallest admission with her hand curled around his jaw.
he can still feel the traces of salt on his skin, mostly rinsed away by an outdoor shower but still softly lingering beneath his clothes like a comfortable reminder of the day he'd had. not only was he able to finally ride a wave that didn't give way to aqua painted fiberglass, but every time he came through that barrel, her eyes were there waiting on him ... they were trained on him now, too; hours later and next to a dwindling fire, as nostalgic laughter plays across his vocal chords like an old record. when danyi pulls the blanket towards her, yunseong doesn't just let go — he follows like an unbreakable habit. the chilly temperatures didn't bother him, as his blood always seemed to gather heat as it flowed. it's the temptation of being even closer that draws him near.
if there were still other people around, yunseong certainly didn't notice. he had sank too deeply into his own thoughts and into the taste of cheap whiskey. there was also a painstakingly beautiful woman basically in his lap at this point, so it was a bit difficult to divert his attention anywhere even if he wanted to. he's barely breathing when his hands find her hips beneath the blanket. he knows he's had to have done this before, so why is his heart about to burst from his chest and take flight ? he hears her mention something about s'mores, but how can she expect him to focus when she kisses him like that ? when she makes cheap whiskey taste like the sweetest champagne ever to touch his lips ? "i'm, i ... uhh — i can make you one," is his offer, his chiseled jaw easily mistaken for putty as it rested in her grip.
his gaze is changed, then, aimed towards direction of the beach and the faint trace of blackened smoke that raises from the ground. squinting, as if it would aid him in seeing better; as if it isn't glaringly obvious, even in the hours of night coming forth and knocking upon the doors of time-pass, pulling a curtain over the world. "oh," he sighs, voice a mixture of both surprise and confusion. "i honestly thought that was just, like, decór for the beach. saving the environment, footprint and all of that." a shrug. "but if it's just for us, i assume it's okay? i've never really done… camping? beach camping?"
he smiles then, head turning to jinam. almost apologetic, realizing the secrecy he's displayed and the implications of distrust it brings forth. "oh, no, god — it's a force of habit. you're not bothering me at all." he moves his hands, putting the pen next to him (and putting an awful lot of faith that it won't simply roll off and away from them), eyes glued to the paper. "my phone's charging and i wanted to capture the sunset. in hindsight, it's kinda bad. i mean, i never was good with landscapes. objects and people is fine, but give me a field and i'll draw like a kid." jaewon laughs. "a breather? how about i draw you instead? it'll be, like, fifteen minutes max."
jinam was somewhat comforted by the fact jaewon hadn't told him to head back to the beach and leave the latter in peace. he settled more into the pier, letting the feelings of relaxation wash over him. almost as if on cue, the warm aroma of cedar embers wafted past the pair, and jinam almost found himself lost in a cavalcade of outdoor childhood memories. "it should be okay. the wood's really dried out, so the fire won't burn for a long time. and we'll just do it tonight to minimize the impact of the smoke," he replied, wanting to take jaewon's concerns on board. "really ? i've never beach camped much, but i grew up in the mountains and we did a ton of camping up there," he offers up his own experiences conversationally, much more comfortable doing so away from a crowd.
after jaewon gives him much needed assurances, jinam smiles and leans back to put his weight on his elbows. "i'm glad to hear it. the last thing i want is to impose," he says genuinely, as the sea's breeze wraps around his ankles like a cocoon. when the other unveils his sketch, jinam isn't quite sure what is bad about it. he couldn't draw to save his life, so maybe he wasn't the best judge of artistic ability, but all he sees is a beautifully rendered ashen sunset over a slate ocean. "i think it's pretty cool, myself, but i struggle with stick figures, so," he admits sheepishly, seasoning the statement with a chuckle. when it is suggested that he be the subject of jaewon's next sketch, jinam freezes, eyes glazing over with trace amounts of fear. it wasn't exactly being photographed, but there was hint of similarity there. still, no one had ever offered such a thing to him, and he couldn't deny the mounting curiosity over jaewon's interpretation of him. "um, yeah. yeah, i'm okay with that. should i just sit here like this, or ... ?" he stammers, suddenly self conscious about what to do.
hey guys, i think i'm gonna be dropping zurie </3 not sure if i wanna bring in someone else or jst do two muses for awhile but yeah ! i know lol it's kinda inconsequential but i didnt want anyone to take the time or effort to do a thread reply for a muse that won't b here anymore 😭

it's a familiar sight, nabi watching the back of someone traversing a cliff, the same way her dad would bring her and her sister out on the rare weekends and teach them ( just nara ) to climb. the sea to their backs and dirt rock facing them, there's a path winding up along the small cliff, clearly trodden on by foot. and there are marks where jinam's climbing hooks have left an imprint, a route more difficult and harsh than the other. but... nabi does know her limits. she never did inherit those mountaineering genes. "i like my neck where it is!" she calls back, hands cupped together. the road more travelled is her path of choice, making it to where jinam stands in a little more time than he took, but the sight of the sea waits for her while nabi gets to where she wants to be. "that was pretty cool, though," she admits, a grin when she finally reaches the other. "when'd you start climbing?"
when jinam hears her voice echo up to him, he smiles and gives an understanding nod in nabi's direction. he wasn't really one to tease someone over their inability to do something, so he patiently waited for her to travel her chosen path. he turned again to face the sea, tongue sans any sarcastic quips. when he felt her presence filling the space beside him, he chuckles into her compliment. "thanks. i honestly can't remember the exact age," he sighs, though it is one of contentment. his eyes reflect memories far happier than before the chaos of cameras took over his childhood. "my parents taught me way back when. it was something they had to do when there was an animal in distress in a treacherous area, so it was a useful skill back there," he explains, shoving both hands into the pockets of his cargo shorts. "what about you ? any parental activities you get roped into ?" he asks lightly, the sound of the expanse before them rolling and churning in his ear.
although it could definitely be interpreted as sarcasm, mari knew that zurie was being sincere with her words. she figured almost anyone would be proud of her in the current moment. raising an eyebrow at zurie's vague response, mari brought her straw up to her lips as she took a sip, waiting for more details to be shared. her eyes followed the other's attention as she too also noticed the giant inflatable obstacle course that was just perked so peacefully on top of the water. how on earth that thing was managed to put up was a mystery and mari couldn't help but feel stressed out for the workers who had to put that thing up. hearing zurie's proposal, mari couldn't help smirk slightly. "not challenging me? you think i won't beat you?" she joked. her eyes looked back at the obstacle course, scanning it quickly to try and find the trampoline that her friend was so eager to try out. "wanna race to trampoline?" she suggested, her competitive nature slowly creeping up to the surface.
zurie couldn't help but be a bit surprised that mari not only agreed to her idea, but sweetened the deal. maybe mari had something of a competitive spirit ? zurie tended to only be competitive when it came to flirting skills, but she still fully intended to accept the other's challenge. she took a couple more sips of her cocktail, swaying her head from side to side as if she had to give it some serious thought.
she glances back to the obstacle course, trying to measure the distance from where they were. it would definitely be quite a trek for both of them, and through sand ? they had quite the race to run, it seemed. "a race, huh ? i think you're on !!" zurie says happily, downing the rest of her drink far too quickly. she seems completely unaffected by it, however. she stands up from the barstool, making a visual note of the edge of the bar's canopy.
"maybe this can be our starting line ?" she suggests, walking over to the stark line shadowed upon the sand. she awaits mari to join her so that it can be completely fair. "are we ready ?"

despite the season, minyoung admittedly never had suntanning on her summer bucket list. however, she'd been enjoying the beachside vacation more than she'd anticipated prior to her arrival. "maybe being away from the computer screen isn't so bad after all." she hummed quietly to herself, leaning back to rest against her carefully placed towel...or so she thought. flecks of sand continued to annoy every part of her body, eventually making its way into her mouth, bringing her to a boiling point. "yes, you are!" minyoung shrieked, removing her sunglasses aggressively to get a clear look at the culprit. "what do you think you're doing?!"
he gaped at minyoung for a moment, eyes shifting between her and the towel a few times. he let her question settle across his ears before risking a glance back at the early stages of his sand mansion. "what does it look like ? i'm obviously building a sandcastle," he replies, as if that were at all what she was referencing. it suddenly strikes him like a smack across the face that she's outraged over her towel being covered in sand, not actually curious about his activities. "oh, right. okay, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to pile sand on your towel," he corrects himself, taking the corners of the fabric and whipping them upward to remove the mess he'd made. "there we go. good as new, right ?" he adds coolly, still looking utterly unfazed about the situation.
the sunset draws its curtain over the horizon, overlapping values of colour reflected upon the surface of the ocean before him. somewhere in the distance, gulls lead a conversation amongst themselves, to which he pries into, even if he understands nothing; otherwise surrounded by silence and a sense of gentle peace. lone and away from the sunset employees — the crowd has made him feel as if he were suffocating among them, combination of the chatter, of the hea and crowding making him feel as if he were suffocating. so away he has found himself, sitting on the wooden edge of the pier, a smile pulled for himself, and his sketchbook in his lap.
it's just graphite that he holds within his hand, but that same graphite has made itself quite triumphant; across the paper are the shades of red and yellow transferred to, this time in shade of grey, & the coastal line.
a shadow falls above him and his canvas and jaewon covers it with his hand quickly, with the innocent notion of a shy artist, looking up thereafter. "oh hey — ah… did something happen back at the yurts?"
@greenfated
considering the waning day, jinam figured everyone would be back at the beach around the bonfire he'd lit a few minutes beforehand, so seeing jaewon seated on the pier was somewhat unexpected. still, he marched onward to the very edge, coming to stand about a meter away. noticing that the other had placed a protective hand over the sketchbook he was holding made jinam instantly avert his eyes entirely, not wanting to pry into jaewon's privacy. he instead fixes his eyes on the hues gathering across the water from the dropping sun, watching as each little crest adds a splash of white to the image.
when jaewon broke the silence, jinam involuntarily let his gaze fall back on the artist. "huh ? oh, uh ... no, not really. i just lit the bonfire, so the alcohol's really flowing now. it's getting a bit rowdy back there for me, so i thought i'd come out here for a few minutes to take a breather."
he sits down on the pier just as jaewon has, letting his legs hang over the edge of the wood planks. "if i'm bothering you at all, just let me know. trust me, i understand," he communicates to the other, the kindred eyes of a fellow introvert full of empathy.

mari probably looked completely animated to the other. her manicured nails tapping furiously on her screen, the asmr style of noise reflecting her mood; tapping faster when she was feeling more passionate and tapping slower when she was feeling less emotional. she was so zoned in on her rant that she didn't even notice him sit down beside her, let alone wait for her to finish her rant before asking her a question. looking up at her phone and turning her attention onto him, mari barely registered that he looked quite shy and very hesitant to speak to her. however, he didn't seem to pose any threat to her, so without thinking, mari's mouth started flapping at a rampage. "you know what fucken sucks?" she began dramatically. "the fucken universe." she answered without missing a beat. "i swear, some people are just stupid and always need to be spoon fed on how to do their job or even have to perform a simple task. i don't understand how some people can be so brainless at their job, like if you can't even do a simple task at work, how do you even look after yourself at home?!" did her words make any sense? probably not, but she just kept going and going and going.
he wasn't expecting a calm response per se, but the information she released took him aback with its speed and intensity. jinam simply let the other vent, offering a nod and a quirk of his eyebrows here and there, but he remained silent otherwise. she didn't really seem to be seeking his advice or opinion; it was more like she just needed someone to listen. listening was one thing he was fairly good at when it came to socializing, so he oftentimes found himself being a reluctant confidant to people.
when she eventually needed to stop for breath, jinam flashes a knowing grin. "i take it you're one of the owners ?" he asks, assuming so only because of how much she seemed to have on her plate.
it was a fascinating concept, partly because he had dreams of one day owning his own business. deep down, he had to wonder how he would handle days like the one mari was having. his eyes peer around the garden once again and it strikes him with inspiration. he stands up from the bench with a small stretch and glances back down at her.
"do you wanna take a walk in the garden ? it always eases my mind when everything seems to be going wrong," he offers, indicating that he was willing to accompany her on the walk if she wanted.

"and this is exactly why i chose to stay on the beach!" minyoung whined out. her crying fortunately did not last long before she was rushing to cover her mouth with both hands to avoid the potential mess that threatened to leap out from the depths of her stomach. to say she that wasn't at least somewhat interested in the possibility of a whale sighting would have been a lie. however, she knew her limits, and was beginning to regret not burying herself in the sand back when she had a chance. "how much longer could this possibly take us??"
minyoung's question resounded in zurie's head a few times, pangs of guilt hitting her almost as hard as the waves were tossing around the tiny boat they were on. they were a mile or two off the coast, struggling to stand up on unexpectedly choppy seas, and it was all zurie's fault. she'd just had to drag minyoung out on this whale watching expedition, and now the latter was extremely ill and miserable. it had been nearly an hour, and neither of them had seen a single thing of interest. it was probably a huge waste of their time and money, and zurie's growing belief of this shone through in her saddened frown. "i know, i'm so sorry i dragged you out here ... i didn't know you would get so sick ! is there anything i can do ??" zurie exclaims, struggling to be heard over the waves cresting against the boat.
there was definitely something almost... healing to the soul when one smells the ocean salt in the air and the warm sand between their toes. mari was enjoying a drink or two at the bar, trying her hardest to not run back to her yurt and grab her work phone to check if any of her clients had messaged her. they wouldn't. she sent out a mass text to her entire contacts list that she would be unavailable during the weekend due to her being on vacation, however just overall muscle memory and general paranoia of letting down a client, mari was gripping onto her glass, trying to contain herself. almost jumping in her seat, mari turned her head and gave zuri a warm smile. "trying not to kill myself for taking a break for once." she jokingly answered. "or... well, trying to take a break." she quickly added, knowing perfectly well that the raven not having her work phone anywhere on her body was definitely a miracle. "why you ask?" mari asked, tilting her head slightly as she tried to mentally prepare herself for whatever wild idea zuri had.
zurie seats herself at the bar, quickly ordering herself a drink from the bartender before turning her undivided attention back to mari. "hey, trying is better than nothing ! i'm proud of you," she replies, bearing a smile almost as warm as the sands covering bandisbul beach. she can't help but feel like mari is somewhat stressed about something in the moment, and knowing her friend, it was likely being away from work. still, zurie had to commend her friend for committing to the beach weekend. mari hadn't even pulled out her phone once, and it had zurie feeling hopeful that it meant she'd be up for her idea.
"oh i was just considering a little fun activity, y'know ??" zurie says cryptically, sparing a glance towards the inflatable obstacle course she had her mental sights set on. swirling the umbrella in her glass around, she continues. "the obstacle course ! don't worry, i promise, i'm not challenging to run it or anything ! i was just wondering if maybe you'd wanna go have a bounce on the trampoline ?" she finally sips a bit of her frozen cocktail, eyes wide and glued to mari, awaiting her reaction.

as jinam dragged the final piece of dried yet heavy driftwood towards the bonfire pits, he prayed to whatever deity may have been listening for some semblance of a breeze off the sea. the air was stagnant though, as if to directly spite him. dropping the driftwood with a satisfying thud, jinam turned his eyes towards the sea. he was seriously considering taking a quick walk into the waves to cool off, but his people watching got to him first. it seemed like everyone was enjoying their vacation, but he couldn't help but notice there was someone missing. he hadn't seen minyoung around all day if he recalled correctly, and it had him wondering what was up. he heads over to the yurt he was fairly certain she was staying in, laying a loud knock upon it's outer wooden siding. "ah, um ... minyoung ? a-are you feeling okay ?" he calls out.
