ATLA has never been banned in China.
You can listen to people in mainland China themselves talk about watching the series on their official streaming services.
Paramount even presented The Legend of Aang movie at the National Film Promotion Conference on November 2, 2025, in Hangzhou.
I don’t know where this rumor originated or why people keep mindlessly spreading it.
LMFAO??? Not only is she lying out her ass, China is ONE Asian country in a continent that’s huge. Even if it were banned there, it could’ve still been popular in other countries. Also, just incredibly ironic to say “local Asian audiences don’t care about Orientalism like Western audiences do 🤓” when the person in the screenshot is not Western and actually from an Asian country.
Also, yeah of course the most talked about aspect of the Orientalism in the show is the part where the Tibetan inspired child monk character gets married and has children.
Stupod people who try to justify why Zuko don't have his scar in the movie... Obviously, spouting nothing but nonsense.
Even if we believe Zuko redirected all the lightning, which is false, because we literally see the electricity still circulating around his body plus the literal script saying he failed to redirect it… the lightning still passed through his heart because he was not grounded when he caught it due to, you know, throwing himself at it in reckless abandon, without a care for anything except making sure Katara was protected. We’re literally explicitly told that if you are not grounded and/or the lightning passes through your heart, you will die. The fact that he held on for as long as he did is a testament to his strength and desperation to, again, protect Katara.

it’s so flynn waiting for rapunzel to come down her tower
I mean, we’ve already got the ‘healing the mortally wounded love interest with nothing but sheer will and determination’ trope that defines the Rapunzel mythos as well.
ZUTARA WEEK 2020: DAY 6 “AFFIRM”
THE LAST AGNI KAI + REACHING FOR EACH OTHER
I can’t believe I TRUSTED you. I was the first person to TRUST you, remember?
Let’s reheat those Southern Raiders nachos
I don’t like how people will sometimes argue that Aang was right and all that juju during the SR episode. I’ll see people say that Aang was supporting her because he “knew what she actually needed” but that misses the ENTIRE POINT of the episode. The point was never if Aang was right or Zuko was, I find it strange under these circumstances when people treat Katara agency/feelings like something almost akin to a child throwing a tantrum.
I can’t really explain it but people tend to put Aang on this moral pedestal like he always knew what Katara needed when it is canon that she doesn’t actually follow his advice. Aang has little to nothing to do with the choice Katara made. She knows right from wrong and she is not a natural killer, but she also isn’t opposed to it either. It’s just something about the argument that reeks of misogyny. I see a lot of people mention how he actually can relate to her pain, but I would go as far to say as that doesn’t matter within the context of what we’re talking about it. He used his grief as an example of what Katara should or shouldn’t do. Their grief is not the same, and they aren’t the same people (aka they don’t process grief the same way clearly). It is insensitive to compare grief in general, but using it as a reason for someone to not act a certain way is even worse. I just want to clarify that mentioning your grief in order to connect with others is not wrong, in fact when used correctly it is a great way to empathize with ohers and something that katara actually does a lot throught the series( with jet and haru).
However, Aang is not actually mentioning his greif in order to show Katara he understands her pain and wants to connect with her emotionally, hes only mentioning it as if to say, "I've also experienced something similar (but not really bc why is the first thing he mentions Appa being stolen??) but I didn't do what you're about to". The tone of his voice indicates that he's judging her, and throughout their conversation, it feels like he's really talking at her, as if he can't see her grief for what it is, interpreting it as just petty revenge, which begs the question does he really ever understand her? How can he have travelled with her for the whole summer and not seen how she still grieved for her mother??
If Aang understood her and knew her as well as anti's claim he does, he would have never insinuated that she only was looking fo Yon Rah becasue she wanted revenge (her mother was MURDERED for petes sake), he would've understood that her grief was slowly poisoning her. To be honest, I would go as far as to say he only understands/sees what she's shown him. It’s significant that when we finally learn the story behind the death of her mother, Zuko is who hears it and not Aang. It is significant that besides the scene in season 1 (when she tells him about her death), aang never attempts to genuinley connect wth katara/ ask about it. I'd like to point out that some anti's claim that this isn't something that he needs to discuss with katara and I disagree. The death of Kya is Integral to kataras character development, and her being able to let go and have full closure marks the end of her character arc.
Don't you think it should be a priority for her LIFE LONG partner to be able to connect with her about something that important?? I know alot of anti's brush this off because they're silly, but in REAL LIFE, people get married to others who understand them, care about them, and accept them fully (and I know antis love to pull the “Kataang is an example of a healthy, comfortable relationship” card). Aang can’t do that without bringing morals into question and that begs the question, if he can't cant accept her or listen/understand her at her worst, how can he claim to know her the best? Again, I really disagree with the notion that Aang was “the angel on Kataras shoulder” as the creators put it, because this completely ignores her point of view, making it seem like she’s simply overreacting over something trivial. (The rest is in comments sry 😭).

I feel like we talk a lot in anti-kataang circles how Aang puts Katara on a pedestal, but we don't talk enough about how Katara does the same thing to Aang, although it leads to an entirely different type of imbalance in their relationship.
She talks about how growing up, she always had hope that the avatar would return and end the war. For her, he was a symbol before he was a person. She believes he is the only way to end the war, not because of any traits he possesses, but because he is the avatar. And therefore, protecting him is her life's mission. And even though that develops into a relatively healthy friendship, it creates imbalance in the romantic sides of their relationship, which we see in canon.
She feels she has to take care of him, talking him down from his rages when he enters the avatar state and constantly standing by his side and giving him advice and providing a safe place for him, no matter what she is feeling. And to some degree, Aang takes advantage of that, as seen in the Ember Island Players when he kisses her without her consent. And while Aang feels comfortable talking to Katara about his feelings, she rarely reciprocates by confiding in him, and rarely reciprocates his romantic interest in general. She constantly supports him, but is ambiguous in her exact feelings towards him. Does she see him as a boyfriend, little brother, or simply as the savior of the world who she has a close friendship with?
Anyway, while Aang sometimes thinks of Katara as a perfect girl who can do no wrong or the beautiful object of his affections, she also sometimes thinks of him as not just a person, but a vessel for something greater. He is her last hope, and because of that, she can't upset him or risk the fate of the world by saying no to him, even if she doesn't feel the same way about him that he does about her.
The way I just wrote a meta that I think ties in so well with all this. Katara sees herself as the protector of the savior, so it’s hard for her to really let herself be vulnerable and naive around him. All the feelings that children experience with their friends, Katara suppresses around Aang because of how she sees him (and honestly, she does this with most of the group because of the nature of parentification). Meanwhile, I think the times we really see her at her most quintessential 14 year old girl is when she’s offering to heal her enemy’s scar after being vulnerable with him because she doesn’t view him as a savior and put him on a pedestal, but deeply connects with him as another child affected by the war. And I think it’s so powerful how she feels that ripped away from her when he betrays her, but then he brings it back to her when he helps her find her mother’s killer.
I think an aspect of the crystal catacombs scene that’s overlooked (sadly, because it’s really the core of the scene) is the childlike innocence that both Zuko and Katara display towards one another. Because, really, the scene is two kids who have been forced to grow up much quicker than they should because they were born into wartime and they see each other as enemies because of this but in this place that’s untouched by war where they’re trapped together, they have this expression of vulnerability and empathy that you can only really have as two kids wanting to connect with each other. It’s very sweet and endearing and naive, but you feel the authenticity of their desire to understand each other and be close to each other. And I think the live action really captures that energy so well despite Kiawentiio and Dallas both being adults when they filmed the scene. It’s why I’m so impressed by them.
