"He's the type of free spirit who says what he wants when he feels like it..." And...Izuku completely misread Aoyama's character. Aoyama, more than arguably anyone else in Class 1A, suppressed the things he truly wanted to say.

Izuku is an observant character whose wins almost always involve having superior intel/analysis of his opponents. The Dekuyama friendship is one of Izuku's only relationships where Aoyama had the undisputed information advantage. Aoyama accurately deduced Izuku's backstory and character since early on in the manga (he was probably wrong on how Izuku was involved in the All for One/One for All conflict, but correct on the quirkless childhood and its effect on Izuku's personality). Izuku on the other hand completely misread Aoyama personality and motives.
