Ai Yazawa's thoughts on NANA's characters Pt.2
Itās been a few months since I madeĀ part 1... My mook (The World of NANA) went on a LONG trip lol, but I decided to post this even after all this time in case someone still hasnāt had the chance to read it!
If you repost this translation please give due credit.
[1] Layla Serizawa (Reira):Ā To other people, Reira looks like a high-class, privileged woman. But to herself, living feels painful, doesnāt it? I kept wondering why, and I think the main reason is that she has an excessively strong attachment to people. Sheās the number one character I want to find her own happiness. Her long, wavy hair suits her perfectly, but it's also the hardest one to draw and takes a lot of time.
[2] Naoki Fujieda:Ā In NANA, heās the only valuable character who doesnāt get caught up in theĀ swampĀ [is often used to describe complicated situations]Ā of human drama. Even his one-shot was created without any trouble and was finished in no time. Although he doesnāt appear much, heās the number one student. Heās a character who gives off energy even to the person drawing him. By the way, Naoki likes glam rock, and he thinks itās because of his momās influence, but itās not (laughs).Ā [itās her influence.]
[3] Junko Saotome:Ā My friends say her bossy side is just like me, but Iām not that strict, right!? Sorry (laughs). Junko is the kind of person whoās strict even with herself and has trouble relying on others, so I think it was really good that she met Kyousuke.
[4] Kyosuke Takakura:Ā Among all my characters, he is one of my favorites. Even with his stylish hair and firm posture, he doesnāt give off any sense of pressure. Thereās no pretense or duplicity in him. He has a relaxed, natural vibe. I wish I could be like that too⦠but how would I even do it? (laughs).
[5] Shoji Endo:Ā I thought, in a way, it was inevitable for Shoji to be attracted to Sachiko, but getting involved with Hachi and Sachiko at the same time was really a mistake, wasnāt it? His kindness ended up turning against him, and Shoji, who doesnāt have a trace of malice, ended up acting like a cheating man. Human beings really are fascinating.
[6] Sachiko Kawamura:Ā She ended up in the role of Hachiās antagonist, and the reaction was so strong it made me want to make a one-shot to defend her. Just to be clear, the reason Sachiko always wears high heels is because sheās insecure about being short. Maybe itās not even on purpose, you know?
- Bonus - (They're in Heibonshaās mookĀ preview)
[7] Miu Shinoda:Ā Miu has a rather complicated background, but I havenāt had the chance to show much of her yet. Still, sometimes itās more interesting to leave her with that mysterious air; besides, thereās also the matter of keeping the story balanced. Itās always hard to decide how much of a character to show and how far to go with it.
[8] Asami Matsumoto (Yuri Kosaka):Ā Yuri and Miu are characters I only included because I thought āmaybe itād be weird if no one lived in the dorm,ā but they ended up dating two popular characters. You really never know whatās going to happen. Yuri isnāt very well received by readers, but I like her because the things she says and does are funny.
[9] Ginpei Moroboshi:Ā When Blastās debut was decided, even though I created the character in a rush, I was happy that a stronger type had emerged (laughs). Besides, he sometimes even says pretty wise things. Blast without Ginpei as their manager is something I cannot even imagine; I really like him.
[10] Mai Tsuzuki:Ā Misato-chan speaks so formally with everyone; I secretly wish someone would show up so she could talk to more casually. But thatās kinda hard, right? She wears VW with a different vibe from Nana, so itās really fun to think about the outfit combinations for her.

NANA x ꬔå ę³¢ęæē³
Ai Yazawa's thoughts on NANA's main characters
These are some comments by Ai Yazawa in the recently released bookĀ The World of NANA.Ā My friend got ahold of photos of the pages with the comments, which was exactly what I wanted to see, so I could post this thanks to her. My other friend whoās fluent in Japanese helped me to translate some parts, so thanks to her too ~ ā”

[1] Nana Komatsu:Ā At first, Hachi was conceived asĀ an ordinary girl you could find anywhereĀ both in appearance and personality. But perhaps because I emphasized the contrast with Nana, she ended up with a considerably more striking personality. After all, in the real world, there really isnāt such a thing as anĀ ordinary girl. When I draw manga, I donāt think the story necessarily has to be realistic, but for me, the characters need to have a truly human feel, or I donāt enjoy it. Thatās why Hachi, who is honest with herself and has many flaws, is a character worth drawing. And that is exactly what makes her dear to me. That said, in terms of art, she can sometimes be a little difficult to work with. Hachi is a girl who likes to dress well, but she doesnāt go as far as wearing clothes that would make guys stay away, so she tends to stick to a safer style. Even so, this pursuit ofĀ the limitĀ might make her clever than she appears (laughs).
[2] Nana Osaki:Ā Before the serialization of NANA, in the standalone long story (included in volume 1) that contained Hachiās and Nanaās chapters, the image of Nana came to my mind before Hachiās. But I thought Hachi might be easier for readers to connect with, so I left her for later. Hachi was born as a contrast to Nana, but Nana was a character I wanted to draw from the very beginning. The 70 pages were physically exhausting, but in terms of the story, it was aĀ smooth delivery. Even later, during serialization, Nana never gave me major difficulties; perhaps she is the easiest heroine to draw in my entire career (laughs). Visually, she also has many standout elements, so drawing her is easy and simply fun.
[3] Ren Honjo:Ā In the story, Ren is technically the lead male, but in the most important scenes, he doesnāt really do much, you know? The other characters end up taking theĀ coolest moments. For me, as the author, heās always been kind of aĀ troubledĀ character. I tend to respect my characters will more than strictly following the story, so I eventually gave up and let him act as he wanted. From the beginning, I had already decided he would have an accident, so while I was drawing, I sometimes felt a bit sad⦠And thinking about it now, maybe that helped create that unique atmosphere around him. A lot of people say his look reminds them of Sid from the Sex Pistols, but I think heās more like those punk guys from later generations who imitated the Pistolsā style. I guess, to fit into the world, Ren armed himself in his own way. Heās super clumsy, but you canāt help loving him.
[4] Nobuo Terashima:Ā Nobu ended up becoming a much more active character than I had imagined at first, and that really took me by surprise. I never thought he would reach the position of lead male! But, looking back, heās sociable, proactive, and above all, very transparent and devoted to the heroine, so maybe it was inevitable that he would start standing out. In the second half of the story, readers ended up splitting intoĀ Team NobuĀ andĀ Team Takumi. I was on Team Takumi (laughs), but I also rooted for Nobu, and I thought Hachi would be happier with him. So when their relationship ended, it was truly painful for me. Visually, Nobu is a character influenced by the Pistols, so he imitates a lot of Johnny Rotten. Of course, he canāt have the same presence as Johnny, but even so, heās really fun to draw.
[5] Yasushi Takagi:Ā Both in the story and in real life, Iāve hardly ever met anyone who doesnāt like Yasu. I like him too. But, to be honest, I donāt really know why heās so popular. Yasu doesnāt talk much about himself, and thereās still a lot about him that I havenāt shown. Donāt you also get that feeling ofĀ not really knowingĀ Yasu? (laughs). Even without me drawing everything explicitly, if he manages to convey who he is and be loved for it, as the author, that makes me really happy. But I also want to one day do a one-shot just to explore Yasu more deeply. Ah, and his shaved head⦠for me, itās one of the top three coolest hairstyles (does that even count as aĀ hairstyle?). But if the circle is too perfect, it doesnāt look natural, so you canāt use a ruler (laughs). When I draw it, I have to hold my breath and really focus.
[6] Shinichi Okazaki:Ā Of all the characters in NANA, Shin is the one I had the most fun creating. More than his appearance, I feel that his expressions are surprisingly rich. He pretends to be cold, but he always seems on the verge of overflowing, holding back, as if his emotions are about to explode. I love portraying complicated emotions that cannot be explained by humanĀ logic, and I think that's what I want to depict in my manga, so Iām always striving to convey his feelings through his expressions and gestures. Itās not easy, but I feel like Iām getting there with Shin. By the way, Shin always seems to be wearing Nobuās clothes without permission, but thatās better because they suit him better than Nobu (laughs). Heās also the typeĀ to arm himself,Ā just like Ren, but in a different way, so Iām sure heās learning by observing the people around him.
[7] Takumi Ichinose:Ā Among the lead males, heās the easiest character for me to draw. In terms of communication, he has certain flaws as a person, but when it comes to how he approaches his work, I can relate to him a lot. Like Yasu, I like the fact that he always observes things broadly and from different angles. But of course, readers often say things like,Ā What a terrible man!Ā about him. Well, I guess thatās part of his charm too. When I listen to music, for some reason I get especially interested in the arrangements, and that makes me tend to admire people who excel in that area. Takumi doesnāt have a specific model, but I imagined a talented musician of that kind. It would have been nice if Iād been able to highlight that side more in the story, but in the end he just ended up with the image of an intelligent, calculating producer (laughs). Itās a bit of a shame, actually.
That's it! These were the 7 main characters who got some spotlight in the book. Btw, if you havenāt bought the book, or if you have and are still waiting for it to arrive, I recommend reading the articles being published onĀ Web Taiyo! Theyāre texts that werenāt included in the book, so check them out!
