Hey. If people aren't aware, Microsoft admitted they know who you and where you are at all times and will give your info to the police.
They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.
Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.
You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.
This article specifically notes:
For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesn’t care which VPN you use, only that it’s still the same Windows installation.
GDID is the persistent Windows ID that helped FBI trace a Scattered Spider hacker despite VPNs. Here's how it works and how to limit it.
Other important quotes:
What has researchers uneasy is everything else the case reveals. Costin Raiu, a well-known malware researcher, asked on the Three Buddy Problem podcast how much of this exists on other platforms, and whether it is linked more permanently to hardware. Matthew Hickey, another security researcher, called Windows “surveillance software”.
Two things back that up:
There’s no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Apple’s advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Android’s works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.
Then there’s activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: “It’s impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].” Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.
I am thinkpad official, I use any pronouns for this blog (just pick the funniest in the moment) I’m a Linux and software enthusiast (you don’t say?) and this is my first offical blog!!!
And hi other computer/linux officals!!! I hope we at least tolerate each other lol:

I've recently been made aware that if you are thinking of switching to Linux or want to switch but don't know how there's a great website made just to help people migrating from Windows to Linux.
The website has a long list of supporters, so if you really know nothing and / or are afraid of trying it and messing something up you will be able to get professional help from this website.
Extended support for Windows 10 ends in 2026. Don’t buy a new PC — revive yours with Linux. It's fast, secure, and help is available to get
There's even a list of places where you can go physically to get help. All over the world, not just in the USA by the way.
Say goodbye to Microsoft treating you like you don't own your PC. Say goodbye to intrusive features you didn't ask for. Say goodbye to ads on the OS you paid for.
Save your PCs from joining the massive amount of e-waste caused by Microsoft's unnecessary requirements.

been considering ricing my arch setup. If anyone has any suggestions for either customising the *fuck* out of KDE plasma or how to use window managers that are compatible with it feel free to let me know!
find a theme you like (https://store.kde.org/), use either kde settings or Kvantum Manager to apply it
same goes for cursors, icons, window decorations and even sddm themes (all from the same website)
if you use grub, you also can theme it
most terminal emulators can also be themed, but process depends on whichever one you use
there are also kde widgets, which you can use to display all sorts of stuff (i have a bunch displaying filesystem sizes & cpu/gpu/ram/network usage)
application launchers/application runners - like krunner (bundled with kde), ulauncher, anyrun, walker, drun/wofi/rofi etc... - incredible tools (i have one bound to Win+Space), but some are easier to theme than other (wofi/rofi are the easiest, ulauncher can't be themed at all as far as i know)
if you want, you could even theme firefox/it's derivatives beyond 'normal' themes (like this insane textbox theme)
also nothing stops you from having multiple window managers/desktop environments, since you can switch between them in the login menu. my personal favourite are tiling wms like i3/awesome for X11, and sway/hyprland for wayland (sway doesn't support nvidia). awesome wm is a beast though, fully conquering it can take days, and i never managed to do it
in the (imo) deepest pits of hell customization, there is quickshell, but i have no idea how well it works with kde. however the demo on its homepage speaks for itself
lastly, here's an awesome-ricing list of more stuff like file managers, terminal prompts, color palette generators etc

Ohh nnoooo GNOME is removing a feature I never cared about or used. If only there was any app that allowed me to reenable it that I and most GNOME users install five seconds after installing GNOME itself. If only.
