Pretty sure we have a signed agreement with Mexico which turned those territories over to the US. It's not like when you pay at the pump and toss the receipt into the passenger floorboard, we save those kinda documents at the archive. They're legally ours, lock, stock and barrel.

I'm pretty sure the Mexican citizens in the new US territories had three options: return south of the border to Mexico, remain where you were, but stay a Mexican citizen, or remain where you were, and be granted US citizenship. I can't really think of an option they were offered, probably couldn't have been more fair.
