How to: Clean a Disaster Bedroom
My room is awful. Everyone who enters and lives to tell the tale are usually speechless. Something that takes weeks to clean only takes a few days to create. If you are anything like me you usually think, âEh why bother?â
Well a few days ago I felt motivated and brave and gosh darn it I did it. I have finally managed to clean my room. And hereâs how I did it:
Make your bed! This step is so important! The bed is usually the focal point and largest part of a room. Plus itâs a pretty easy place to start. I usually like to throw my sheets in the wash while I do the next step but sometimes just make my bed first.Â
Food and dishes. Having food in your room can attract bugs and having all the missing forks in your room typically doesnât go over well with your parents (we had one fork for two weeks). Take any dishes and snacks back to the kitchen and throw away any wrappers or any food that changed colors. AND RECYCLE ALL THOSE WATERBOTTLES!
Clothes. This is what made my room impossible to clean. Dirty laundry should be thrown into the wash first. Then the clean clothes. I have a lot of clothes and not a lot of space to store them. It is so important to create a system that effectively stores your clothes! I have more closet space than drawer space so I try to hang as much stuff up as possible and went online to find great ways to fold clothes as small as possible. Any clothes that were out of season or coats that donât belong in my room I put in storage elsewhere.Â
Magazines, books, and papers. Even if I havenât read it yet, if a magazine is over two months old I will recycle or give it to my younger neighbor because odds are I wonât be reading it if I havenât read it in the past two months. Any current magazines I will put in a pile on a coffee table or by my bedside to read. Books belong on shelves. I have a lot of books so I set leftover on my dresser in a pile from largest to smallest to make it look intentional. Any loose papers floating around your room just put all into a pile and set neatly on your desk or in a folder to go through later (you will probably never look through these but itâs nice to pretend).
Electronics and cords. I have one drawer in my room to throw any loose cords, small gadgets, cameras, remotes, whatever you name it into. If you have a lot of this stuff in your room then you should probably designate a discreet and tucked away spot to store them all in. I also have a lot of cords coming from my tv, clock, and turn table in one spot. I like to zip tie all my tv cords so that they look neat and are easy to tuck away. I also have a DVD player and GameCube but since I donât use them all the time I like to put them away in my closet to keep the room looking clean.
Clutter. Organize any surfaces and shelves. My desk and dresser top are usually full of stuff and look ridiculous. I keep all my perfume and such on my dresser so I like to clear any garbage and line up my perfume neatly. Do the same for objects you have on your desk. Put your pencils in a jar and stack papers and notebooks.
Plants. If you have any make sure to tell them how great they are. Then dust them off :)
Outcasts. Take a laundry basket or box and anything that does not belong in your room or does not have a place put in the box. Then put them in their rightful place or find them a new home. Tip: Pizza cutter belongs in the kitchen.
Whatâs left? Take anything that is left on the floor that you are not sure where to put and throw it in a laundry basket. Every day tell yourself to pick out 3 objects and find it a home.
Vacuum or sweep. Donât forget to dust and wipe down surfaces and shades. Also, open a window to air out the room and feel fresh! Time to relax and enjoy.
I hope these steps helped you get your room to look a little more orderly! I definitely always need to think of cleaning in steps or break it down so I will actually do it.Â
I try to convince myself I donât mind living in a mess but once itâs clean it feels so good!
