Slightly-tensed shoulders further relaxed. Not that the adrenaline wasn’t still coursing through him as well, and not that he hadn’t had fun, but work would always come first for Herc. And if it’d been Newton he was dealing with, he would have a huge headache trying to arrange the information given into a coherent whole for the brass.

But Beatrix was conscientious as he’d come to realize after bringing her into the PPDC. And if she said she’d do something the right way, Herc wasn’t going to worry about it.

“What do you do for fun?” Herc shrugged on his jacket and and led the way out. If he’d known jumping from a plane was as fun as piloting fighter jets, he would’ve done it much sooner. “I’m good with a meal and drinks, but prepare for your eardrums to be shattered if we’re talking singing. My son-” He had to smile at the memory, which was one of the rare ones he had which was good- “yelled at me about him going deaf after K-Sci dragged us to sing one time.”

He quirked a smile at Beatrix. “Still up for it? We have, ah…four hours left before we need to check back into base.”

Beatrix could be careless and devil may care; but not when it came to her as a professional. And Herc had given her a chance to to do something important-significant-with her abilities. Not just blow up things for fun. Not set off fire works somewhere she shouldn’t. Not experiment with different chemicals for the biggest blast.

She could have done demolition-but this was so much better.

“Mmm.” She fixed her own denim jacket-too big for her; it had been her father’s. “No one sings Karaoke because they’re good at it. It’s about self expression and a way to vent. Also, Karaoke booths bring drinks to you.”

“Most of the defense corps is good people, but yeah, I know what you mean.” Beatrix laughed, but then she let her face go serious. “My condolences. It seems like a lot of the people in the PPDC have someone they’re fighting for. Either someone they lost, or someone they want to protect.”

“I….think the second is healthier. But the PPDC gives us something productive to do with our grief. So that’s helpful too. We’ve lost-so we don’t want others to lose.”

Beatrix smiled faintly as she glanced up at the sky instead, watching the stars up in the darkness.

“…shame no one’s produced tiny twin dancers to summon a giant butterfly to help out.” Things got too serious, and she’d make jokes. That was her way.

“I don’t quite understand that reference. Is it from a movie or something like that?” Tammy frowned, thinking. 

“But hey, if you need any help with your research or testing out weapons and such, hit me up. Marshal Pentecost has me acting as a go-fer for the engineers, but most of the time, they feel better handling things on their own. Not that I can blame them. I prefer doing what I’m good at on my own, too. But it gives me way too much time to think.”

She picked her cup with the discarded cigarette inside, sure that Beatrix had seen her put it out in the cup, and shook it at the redhead. “Or, you know, if you want a smoke. Okay, I probably shouldn’t encourage that.” She laughed.

“Ah, yeah,” Beatrix laughed warmly, “My Dad really loved the old Godzilla movies. Godzilla Vs Mothra were my favorites. These two tiny girls would appear, do a song and dance number, and a giant butterfly would show up. Usually there were other creatures in play, too. It seemed fitting in light of our new reality.”

Beatrix nodded, and smiled at Tammy after a moment. “Ah, yeah, probably would help to get an outside perspective. I mean I made it, so I assume everything is working, it’s reality is wrong. I’m blinded to the flaws. I’ll be around with some designs.”

I May Only Have One Match But I Can Make an Explosion

Does your character have a need to see something get blown up? Not necessarily someone, but something? Do they just want to put on a flashy fireworks display? Regardless of what, where, or when they need someone with a knack for explosives, Beatrix is just what the doctor ordered.

Highly adaptable for any environment, Boomer is an experience of a person-and not one to be missed!

“All right, hold up.” Herc laughed, holding his hands up. “If Stacker hadn’t wanted to kill me before this jump, he probably will after this.” He gestured at Beatrix, focusing through the adrenaline to think more clearly. “You have a point, though, about shared experiences allowing for Drift Compatibility.”

As the both of them were ushered off the field they’d just landed in, and back into the office where they could wait for their photos and videos to be transferred to USB sticks, the Ranger came to a decision.

“Get the numbers ready for me first, along with the few activities outside of the kwoon you think might be suitable. I’ll run them through with the doctors first, then suggest them to Stacker privately.”

“Sir, yes, sir,” Beatrix laughed warmly and nodded, “I’ll get the research together and do up an APA citation list to back up a proposal. You can reword it however you want.”

“The Kaiju is doing a lot of killing these days.” Tammy couldn’t keep the hardness from her voice. She took another look at the city lights, and turned her back on them, leaning against the railing. “My parents were killed by the Kaiju in Kucing, Malaysia. One of the most recent attacks.”

She shook her head. “It’s hard, but thanks for, you know, continuing your dad’s work. We’ve all lost a lot already.” But at Beatrix’s mention of Herc Hansen, Tammy had to crack a smile. “Herc is good people.“

The freefall passed by all too soon. It was only a couple of seconds of that stomach-dropping sensation that Herc had already gotten used to years ago when flying fighter jets, and then when terminal velocity took over, he just felt like he was floating.

But that rush. That rush. 

That was it. He was dragging the entire Jaeger teams (including Stacker) to do this again, and soon.

Beatrix’s shouts of delight made him smile, then laugh, as he slapped his instructor’s offered palm and then made his way over to her. 

“Stacker, actually,” Herc joked. “Our Marshal threatened to kill me twice over if I even tried it. You need to help me convince him and them to come with us next time, because fuck if we aren’t doing this again. Convince my son, especially. Maybe he’ll listen to someone other than his old man.”

“I think I can pull that off,” Beatrix grinned like a chesire once more, “Bonding exercises. Shared experiences with boosts of adrenaline and sharpened senses. Allowing for better drift compatibility.”

“I can probably talk to some of our other scientifically inclined minds-coax them into helping me prepare a proposal with facts and numbers to present to Stacker,”

She stretched her arms over her head as she glanced over at Herc, debating her next words. “Sign me up in perpetuity, Herc. Whenever there’s a chance, I’m so down. You know, I wonder if we could rig something in the Dome. I mean we’ve got a lot of vertical height there. How much clearance do we need? Oooh, we could look into bungee jumping, too!”
