“…The smallest flicker in the pupils, but still. And you say to yourself, see? Beneath it all he's just what you thought he was. A man. And ignore the fact that what you saw those tiny pupils do was expand. Expand for you after you stared back long enough. Ignore the fact that what you saw those black points expand with... was love.”

“Only death will stop me.”
Oh, but everyone dies. It doesn’t matter how desperately you try to fix this city now, not when it will all falls apart again once you’re gone.
And then what?
-❤️
RULE 4.) If you can’t change the variable, use it as the control.
─────────────────────
“Then I die.”
Then I die; hoping I made a difference. Hoping they carry on. Hoping it wasn’t for nothing.
Standing on the crumbling ledge of corruption that can’t hold up this city any longer. That tears down the values his family fought for, and kills innocents in the shadowed alleyways and filthy streets.
“Philanthropy isn’t dead. I’m not the only vigilante in Gotham. This city is its own ecosystem. Even if it suffers, it’ll balance out.”
Vigilantes who discriminate between their perceived good and bad, slowly ticking down the population, playing executioner. Frothing at the mouth to paint the city in blood at any slight they deem irredeemable.
Nausea rose in his already tense figure, gripping the table he was leaning against with whitened knuckles.
“These aren’t stitches.”
He took a breath in.
“The city’s political landscape is an open wound.”
Weeping blood, infected and weakened. The impressive power of the Lazarus Pit briefly crossed his mind. He pushed the thought away.
“My place in the city is a bandaid. A temporary measure as I, and many others, try to fix the corruption at the source. That effort doesn’t go away when I’m gone.”
With a flick of his finger on a mousepad he clicked a folder labeled ‘Contingencies’.
Hello Batsy... writing from Arkham (you should know!) it's boring as sin in here. No one laughs at my jokes. My ribs hurt from where you broke them... gives me a giggle and then they hurt more.
Anyway picking up the chess game where we left off. It's the least you can do since you're not here for the cards and you cracked my jaw. It's your move darling:
[A drawing of a chess board with bats and smiling clown faces on a checkerboard. Some moves have already been played, indicating a game left off and resumed]
- (@jokergotaway)
RULE 5.) Build a rapport, even with your deadliest foes. You never know when you’ll need them.
─────────────────────
He studied the note with awful precision; mulling over it for much longer than he reasonably should.
The letter was written sloppily, the Dark Knight felt himself grow nauseous as he imagined the sickening glee and romanticism in which the clown derived from wounds meant to detain him.
He grit his teeth, his hands tightening on the paper that tore ever so slightly where the object’s feeble resistance met violent strength.
He set the note down and forced himself to inhale, counting for four and releasing the breath.
By all means, he should discard the letter. Tear it to pieces, burn it, and draw offense from the implication that playing chess was more than an act of pity. And yet, he found himself almost compelled to write back.
Joker,
Your Queen is unguarded.
If you are experiencing boredom, I suggest trying to better yourself in Arkham. I’m sure they’ll have plenty of activities for you there.
Batman.
He moved a bat ever closer before sighing, and sliding the note away from himself.
It was, as ever, forever unclear how the Joker knew how to reach Batman. He did it for years when the Bat was just starting out, physical letters duly delivered, somehow in some way, despite the Joker not knowing Batman's identity as Bruce Wayne. It was an odd puzzle at times; the letters would just show up at one of Batman's alternate lairs, or some place the Bat would likely be, undated, perhaps waiting for weeks or months to be found. Sometimes they were at unrelated crime scenes, sometimes the police delivered them to him if they were feeling especially generous (or threatened). Ditto the Arkham staff. When physical letters didn't work, digital sufficed, directly delivered to the Batcomputer or posted loudly on social media and impossible to ignore... depending on his mood. The alternative to ignoring the communication was always a mistake: Joker had a tendency to escalate things quickly if he perceived his messages were not being received or answered. He always gave Batman quite a bit of time before he resorted to this, but it was inevitable if he waited too long. Perhaps it was something better left unresolved... the Joker always found a way if he wanted to. On the flip side of this, of course, was that sometimes the Joker would disappear, go silent or go dormant for months at a time, and that had the potential to be infinitely worse than the letters. That meant he was planning something, usually something horrible. The reply came a few weeks later, envelope flapping in the wind and tied to a red balloon, the string tangled messily around a trashcan lid. It was in an alley Batman regularly patrolled alone, clearly intended to be found only by him and not the sprats. A dripping, scrawled bat with a hideous smile was doodled on the front of the envelope.
B - My Queen unguarded you say? Say it ain't so! But you know...I've always been one to take a little risk now and again. I find it can really pay off... Anywho, I've taken your Bat-advice and I've really committed to bettering myself, per your suggestion. Why, this week alone I've: - taught Szasz a magic trick where he disappears from genpop for a while & I don't have to listen to his incessant muttering - helped a guard practice a balancing act by seeing how many times he could fall down the same six stairs. Turns out: several! He's very dedicated, though the paperwork calls it "an incident" I've started a whole curriculum, actually! Tuesday is anger management (mine, theirs, whoever's closest), Wednesdays is woodshop (didn't have any wood so I improvised, lots of screaming yeesh), & Saturday is a little thing I call "team building" which is just me deciding who's on my team by process of extreme elimination. Very structured. Very growth-minded. I might even get a certificate if I keep at it! Heheeeee! Other things from this week included explaining to my new psychiatrist why the inkblots are all obviously you in different outfits. She's writing a paper on me she says, hoohoo! I still say I'm better in the funny papers than the academic ones. One more thing, and then I'll let you go play dashing & daring detective. Someone visited me this week who wasn't on the list. Didn't give a name, didn't need to really... sharp suit, sharper smile, insufferably boring. Paid off Jerry Arky to see lil ole me I can tell you that much. Made me an offer. A job. Very generous, very specific, very much not my style, haha! No punchline! No pizzazz! I said no, obviously, I have standards, I'm an artist. But here's the thing, Bats: people like that don't take no and go home. They take no and go next door. So somebody's saying yes to that job right now, probably somebody a lot less charming & stylish than me, and you're going to have a much worse week than I am. Thought you'd want the head start. I'm generous like that!!!! XOXO your pen pal PS - Still can't chew solids, by the way. Soup diet, very slimming, you'd approve I think... [The Queen has been set up to be sacrificed...bait. It puts Batman's King into a vulnerable position; but it's also a risky move. It additionally puts pressure onto the board as there are multiple threats coming from different angles...a very Joker-style play, if a little predictable]
@bat-tarang
He spotted the balloon from the building above and couldn’t contain his heaving sigh; dropping down into the alleyway from above and landing gracefully in the shadows with only the sound of boots hitting concrete and the quiet flutter of his cape catching the air.
He untied the knot quickly, expertly, and opened the letter with grit teeth and tense posture — skimming over the note with precision and a narrow glare.
He called upon the Batmobile, stalking to the car once it arrived and retrieving a pen from the glovebox — ever prepared.
Joker,
There is good for you in your future if you cooperate. The games you play with others negatively impacts your credibility when you get a clean bill of health. Mistakes follow you. Don’t let this stay be one of them.
If you need a new cell, away from Zsasz, I am already in direct communication with Director Arkham. If you’re right about this ‘job’, then I’m going to have a serious conversation with him about who he hires for security. I’ll have him up your medication when I do.
Batman.
Winning chess against Joker was never on his itinerary. There was little satisfaction in succeeding at a board game with a madman who might as well claim it is ‘opposite day’ in light of his losses.
And yet still, it remained wiser to entertain him in light of recent tragedies than allow another atrocity to occur in the wreckage. Surely, Joker realized the same, and was why he was pushing this infernal game of chess. Why he was giving him leads.
There was someone he wanted off the chess board. And Batman could only assume the worst, if they were willing to go to the extreme of attempting to hire Joker for a job. That was a gamble not even Dent would make.
With that in mind, he took the bait.
I need more scenes of Batman provoking the Joker by aknowledging their actual relationship because this is crazy.

I'm not great at explaining my thoughts but I have been thinking about Stone monitoring radio signals for any sign of Robotnik after Sonic 3... And in his grief the white noise starts to sounds like the whispers of angels...
