sorry for being inactive but rest assured im back on my rogue academic bullshit by printing out a phone scanned version of Neal H. Walls' "The Goddess Anat in Ugaritic Myth" (1991) in the library. the guys at my local UPS who do the binding for these must fucking hate me. i will not stop though.

(note: i havent read as thoroughy as id like but ohhh my god so far i really love Walls' analysis of Anat as a representation of women [and to an extent other minority/subaltern genders] in rejecting femininity as a form of rebellion and anger at androcentric societies. like that fucking rules)

further thinking about how Walls isn't shy about talking about Anat's gender/lack thereof. She exists completely outside of the genders we see on display both in devotional texts/hymns and any kind of historical record, and Walls' bringing up how this connects to her status as "betulat" (virgin) and "ybmmt lmm" (sister in law of the peoples), because her rejection of femininity in a lot of ways keeps her from taking on the role of marriagable woman, keeping her as "betulat" and in the social group of rebellious, gender nonconforming "adolescents". Walls also brings up an interesting point about how this could connect to Anat's violence and passion and trophy-taking + the Aqhat epic as seeking to metaphorically and physically castrate men either to reinforce her genderlessness/third gender (???) or lash out against androcentrism (as Walls put it. I'm not sure if i want to label Ugaritic society as misogynistic even if Aqhat clearly is as a character, we just don't know if he's a stand in for a type of person who actively looks down on Anat for being a woman/perceived as a woman / women in any kind of nonconformity or if hes just stupid and an example of hubris). Walls also references a translation of the Aqhat epic that describes Aqhat's death in a.... uniquely grotesque way, which is saying a bit compared to Anat's slaying of Mot and her fighting in the valley in the UBC. imma try and find it. its a really good book.

again im not buying the "adolescent" as literal, but Anat again occupying the liminal space between child and woman, and Baal being a young man from outside the family/taken as a son of El and seeking to ascend to "manhood" by becoming king of the gods. sort of like my working idea of El/the king of the gods being the "father" of all gods regardless of if hes actually their sire, as a status within the "family" structure of the pantheon, where every other god is a child in comparison. i guess. but still absolutely fascinating i love this shit. my goat

NOTES: Added a Language section aimed at making Ugaritic language and cuneiform more accessible and understandable, as well as making the connections between all ancient and modern semitic languages clearer (I have gained a lot of understanding of texts by consulting Arabic speakers and I think the etymology of semitic words cannot be understated in this context. I also personally feel that this adds credence to Arabic being a West/Northern semitic product that did not originate so far south as usually attributed, but this is an aside). Will be updating over time.

every so often i see notifs of my first ever Anat piece reblogged (nice!!!) and i Must put an addendum here: ive since improved my research and scholarship in the 2 years since making this and have amended that she Was Not a sexual love/fertility goddess even if she had a sexual aspect, as it feeds into a bizarre trend of trying to shave down every ancient east Mediterranean/Mesopotamian/Southwest Asian/North African female deity into the same prototype of Ishtar-Innana. which isnt to say that the Ishtar-Innana sexual love/war thing is any less cool or correct, it is! its just a very interesting and now irritating concept i see reused Constantly in scholarship and online conversations alike, and it peeves me for not realizing it sooner. so this is my formal (/joke) apology and revision of the claim, since I generally interpret 'Anat to be more representative of the messy, violent, destructive emotional love now (still cool) since her sex-gender-expression is so fascinatingly complex that I think trying to shove her into the female deity=sexual fertility niche is reductive and generally less cool.
